10 Diversity is Crucial Because tissue types are inherited, patients are more likely to match someone who shares their racial or ethnic heritage. To increase the likelihood of a match for everyone, more registry members of diverse backgrounds are needed. The NATIONAL MARROW DONOR PROGRAM operates the Be The Match Registry. 10

11 Registry Diversity We are 9 million members strong, but there is still a great need for committed members of diverse heritage. 13 Joining the Registry At a donor registry drive, participants will: Learn more about the commitment they re making. Fill out a confidential consent form. Answer brief health questions. 16 Steps to Donate Answer the call from Be The Match that you are a possible match for a patient. Give another cheek swab or blood sample to confirm you are the best match. Attend an information session. Donate blood-forming cells or marrow, based on doctor s request. Recover from any side effects. Receive follow-up support.
