2 TAR HEELS COMPLETE TURNAROUND WITH PEACH BOWL WIN OVER AUBURN After starting the season with three consecutive losses, North Carolina completed the greatest turnaround in school history, winning eight of its last 10 games, including a victory over Auburn in the Chick-fil-APeach Bowl. The Tar Heels, led by first-year head coach John Bunting, finished 8-5 overall, 5-3 (3rd) in the Atlantic Coast Conference and earned their first bowl trip since It was the 10th winning season in the last 11 years. Carolina dropped its first three games to Oklahoma, Maryland and Texas before putting together a five-game win streak that included a 41-9 rout of Florida State and a dominating 38-3 victory at Clemson. The FSUgame was Bunting s first win at Carolina and was UNC s first win over the Seminoles in 13 meetings. After falling to Georgia Tech and Wake Forest, Carolina closed the regular season with wins over Duke and SMU to earn the Peach Bowl bid. BUNTING WINS THE MOST OF ANY FIRST-YEAR TAR HEEL COACH Head coach John Bunting won more games (8) in his first season at North Carolina than any other first-year coach in school history. Carl Torbush (1998) and Carl Snavely (1934) each won seven games in their first seasons. Bunting, a 1972 North Carolina graduate, was the first former letterwinner to coach the Tar Heels since PEPPERS WINS LOMBARDI TROPHY & BEDNARIK AWARD Defensive end Julius Peppers became the first Tar Heel to win a major college football award when he was named the 2001 Rotary Lombardi Award winner in Houston on Dec. 5. The Lombardi Trophy is given annually to the nation s best lineman. Peppers beat out fellow defensive ends Dwight Freeney of Syracuse and Alex Brown of Florida for the honor. A day after winning the Lombardi Trophy, Peppers flew to Orlando where he was presented the Chuck Bednarik Award as the nation s top overall defensive player. Peppers also was named the Chevrolet National Defensive Player of the Year and was one of five finalists for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, which is given to the nation s top overall defensive player by the Charlotte Touchdown Club. In 2001, Peppers had 63 tackles, including 19 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks. He also led the team in interceptions. Peppers finished his three-year Carolina career second on the school s all-time list in sacks (30.5) and tackles for losses (53). Carolina completed the greatest turnaround in school history by winning eight of its last 10 games, including a victory over Auburn in the Peach Bowl. PEPPERS UNANIMOUS ALL- AMERICA; JERSEY WILL HANG IN KENAN STADIUM Peppers was a unanimous All-America selection and his No. 49 jersey will be added to the facade of Kenan Stadium in He is just the second unanimous first-team All-America in school history and the first since Lawrence Taylor in He was named first-team All-America by the Associated Press, The Sporting News, Football News, Walter Camp Football Foundation, American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) and CNNSI.com. Peppers is the first Tar Heel to be named consensus first-team All-America at UNC since defensive end Greg Ellis, linebacker Brian Simmons and cornerback Dre Bly earned that honor in PEPPERS, SIMS AMONG FIRST SIX NFL DRAFT PICKS Defensive linemen Julius Peppers and Ryan Sims were two of the top six picks in the 2002 NFLDraft. Peppers was the No. 2 overall pick by the Carolina Panthers and Sims was taken with the sixth pick by the Kansas City Chiefs. Peppers and Sims were among six Tar Heels selected. Linebacker David Thornton was taken in the fourth round by Indianapolis, while Joey Evans, Ronald Curry and Quincy Monk were picked in the seventh round. There were more players taken in the NFL Draft from North Carolina than any other school in the country. 3 In 2001, quarterback Darian Durant set Carolina freshman records for touchdown passes (17), completions (142), passing yards (1,843) and total offense (1,971). THORNTON ONE OF BEST STORIES David Thornton, a former walk-on who was awarded a scholarship prior to the start of the 2001 season, blossomed into one of the Tar Heels top playmakers on defense in Thornton led the team with 131 total tackles, was second with 10 tackles for loss and third with three sacks. He had double digits in tackles in seven games this season, including a season-high 17 against Wake Forest. He entered the 2001 season with just 24 career tackles, including 16 tackles as a special teams player in Thornton was voted UNC s defensive MVPand earned second-team All-ACC honors and he was selected in the fourth round of the 2002 NFLDraft by the Indianapolis Colts. AIKEN COMPLETES BREAKOUT SEASON Junior wide receiver Sam Aiken had eight touchdown catches in 2001, just one shy of the school record of nine set by Marcus Wall in Aiken had one touchdown catch against FSU, East Carolina, Virginia and Wake Forest and two touchdown receptions against both Georgia Tech and Duke. The Kenansville, N.C., native led the team with 46 catches for 789 yards, a team-leading 17.6 yards per catch. Aiken was fifth in the ACC in receiving yards per game. TAR HEELS TIE TD PASS RECORD Carolina quarterbacks threw 25 touchdown passes in 2001, tying the school record established in Darian Durant had 17 touchdown passes and Ronald Curry had eight. Curry s 43-yard pass to Chesley Borders in the SMU game tied the record. In 1996, Chris Keldorf tossed a single-season school-record 23 touchdown passes and Oscar Davenport had two. Carolina s yards passing per game was the fourth-highest per game average in school history and the most since the 1997 Tar Heels set the school record with yards a game. DURANT HAS IMPRESSIVE FRESH- MAN CAMPAIGN Redshirt freshman quarterback Darian Durant had one of the best offensive seasons in UNC history despite starting just two games and splitting time with Ronald Curry in 11 games. In 2001, Durant established Carolina freshman records for touchdown passes (17), completions (142), passing yards (1,843) and total offense (1,971). Durant s 17 touchdown passes were the thirdhighest single-season total in UNC history. Chris Keldorf set the school record with 23 TD passes in 1996 and Matt Kupec had 18 touchdown passes in Durant was second in the ACCand 12th in the nation in pass efficiency (149.29). Florida State redshirt freshman Chris Rix was the only freshman in the country with a better efficiency rating (156.6). Durant completed 63.7 percent (142 of 223) of his attempts. Durant was named the ACC s Rookie of the Week six times and finished second behind Chris Rix for ACCRookie of the Year honors. CURRY S RECORD-BREAKING CAREER Ronald Curry had an outstanding career at UNC. Curry holds UNCcareer records for total offense, passing yards, rushing yards by a quarterback and rushing touchdowns by a quarterback. He also is second in career pass completion and fourth in touchdown passes. In 2000, he established a single-season school record with 2,676 total yards. Curry started 10 games in 2001 and was 62 of 134 passes for 1,005 yards and eight touchdowns. He also rushed for 253 yards and three touchdowns. He earned offensive MVPhonors in the 1998 Las Vegas Bowl and the 2001 Peach Bowl. WIDE RECEIVERS COME UP BIG After struggling earlier in 2001, Carolina s wide receivers made significant strides in the final two months of the season. After scoring no touchdowns in the first three games of the year, Carolina s top three receivers Sam Aiken, Kory Bailey and Bosley Allen scored 18 touchdowns in the next eight games. In addition, a UNC receiver had at least 100 yards receiving in four of the last five games. Allen had back-to-back 100-yard games at Clemson and vs. Georgia Tech and Sam Aiken had back-to-back 100-yard games vs. Wake Forest and Duke. Three Tar Heel receivers made at least 39 receptions, including 46 by Sam Aiken, 44 by Kory Bailey and 39 by Bosley Allen. The last time Carolina had three receivers with at least 30 catches was in It was just the second time Carolina has ever had two receivers with at least 40 receptions. The other was in 1995 when Leon Johnson, a tailback, had 54 catches and wide receiver Octavus Barnes had 53. UNC LEADS THE ACC IN TOTAL DEFENSE Carolina ranked first in the ACCand 15th in the nation in total defense in 2001, allowing just yards per contest. The Tar Heels were also first in the conference and eighth in the nation in pass efficiency defense. In other ACCdefensive categories, Carolina was first in pass defense (yards per game), second in opponents third-down conversions, third in rushing defense, and third in scoring defense. Carolina has finished first in the ACCin total defense 12 times. The last time Carolina was No. 1 in total defense was Carolina held both Florida State and NC State to just nine points in wins during the 2001 season. It was just the fifth time since 1982 that the Seminoles had been held to less than 10 points. TAKE A NOTE Carolina won eight of its final 10 games of the 2002 season. The two losses were by a combined total of eight points (1 vs. Wake Forest, 7 at Georgia Tech) Carolina won its fifth consecutive bowl game with a victory in the Chick-fil-APeach Bowl. The Tar Heels are one of only three teams to win their last five bowl games. LSU and Miami (Fla.) are the other two teams. Carolina won the 1995 Carquest Bowl (20-10 vs. Arkansas), the 1997 Gator Bowl (20-13 vs. West Virginia), the 1998 Gator Bowl (42-3 vs. Virginia Tech), the 1998 Las Vegas Bowl (20-13 vs. San Diego State) and the 2001 Chick-fil-APeach Bowl (16-10 vs. Auburn). 13 Tar Heels, including starters Kory Bailey, Merceda Perry, Billy-Dee Greenwood, David Thornton, Quincy Monk, Joey Evans and Jeff Reed graduated on Dec. 20, Carolina was 8-0 after head coach John Bunting installed a rotation system with quarterbacks Ronald Curry and Darian Durant. Carolina played eight teams that earned postseason bowl bids in That equaled the highest number of any school in the nation. Carolina won eight games in a season for the first time since going 11-1 in Over the last 10 years, Carolina has played in eight bowl games. Florida State is the only ACCteam to have played in more bowl games. Place-kicker Jeff Reed set a school record for consecutive extra points without a miss (66) in Ronald Curry established the school record for career total offense in a win over ECU. Curry played in two bowl games during his career and was named MVPin each of those games. Curry capped his amazing career with offensive MVPhonors in the 2001 Peach Bowl. As a freshman, he earned MVPhonors after his performance in UNC's win over San Diego State in the 1998 Las Vegas Bowl. Carolina had more players (6) taken in the 2002 NFLDraft than any other team in the ACC. In 2001, Carolina was 5-1 at Kenan Stadium, its best record at home since Carolina had 43 pass plays longer than 20 yards, including six over 50 yards PEACH BOWL CHAMPIONS 133

12 Defending national champion Oklahoma capitalized on five first-half turnovers to build a 41-7 lead, then held off a late charge by North Carolina to post a season-opening win in the Hispanic College Classic. Carolina aided the Sooners cause by losing four fumbles and an interception in the opening quarter and a half. Oklahoma returned a fumble, interception and kickoff for touchdowns in the first half. The Tar Heels dominated the national champions in the second half and finished the game with a statistical advantage in first downs and total offense yards. Carolina gained 290 yards to 286 for the Sooners and had 20 first downs, eight more than Oklahoma. The Sooners 286 yards were the fewer than any total they had in their 2000 national title season. Carolina s defense, led by end Julius Peppers and linebacker David Thornton, did not allow Oklahoma to score a point on its last nine possessions. Redshirt freshman quarterback Darian Durant came off the bench to rally the Tar Heels in the second half. Durant completed 12 of 26 passes for 152 yards and two touchdowns and added another 39 yards on the ground. Durant was Carolina s leading ground gainer, as well. The Sooners jumped out to a 17-0 lead just 3:39 into the game. Carolina fumbled on the second play, leading to a 25-yard field goal by Tim Duncan. Oklahoma then went 46 yards on three plays, capped by a 4-yard run by Quinton Griffin. The Tar Heels fumbled the ensuing kickoff and OU recovered at the UNC 19-yard line. Four plays later, Renaldo Works scored from seven yards out and it was 17-0 Oklahoma with 11:21 to play in the first quarter. Just over seven minutes later, UNC tailback Andre Williams fumbled and OU All-America linebacker Rocky Calmus scooped up the loose ball and raced 14 yards for a touchdown and a 24-0 lead. Peppers got the Tar Heels on the board with 1:48 to play in the first when he intercepted a screen pass and dashed 29 yards for a score, his second career interception return for a touchdown. However, the Sooners promptly answered as Antwone Savage took a short kickoff and went 88 yards for a score and a 31-7 lead. Early in the second quarter, Oklahoma cornerback Derrick Strait intercepted a Ronald Curry pass and raced 47 yards for another score. Oklahoma tacked on its final points of the first half, and as it turned out, the game, on a 22-yard field goal by Duncan. That score followed yet another UNC turnover, this time a fumbled snap at UNC s own 3- yard line. The Tar Heels scored the game s final 20 points. Cornerback Michael Waddell returned a punt 89 yards for a touchdown late in the second quarter to cut Oklahoma s lead to The return was the second-longest in Carolina history. Durant took over for Curry at quarterback on the third series of the second half. He connected with Chesley Borders on a 26-yard TD pass early in the fourth quarter. Borders caught ball over the middle and raced around the corner for the score. On Carolina s next possession, Durant led the Tar Heels to the end zone again. It was the ACC opener for both schools. Barnard was the game s most valuable performer as he repeatedly pinned Carolina deep in its own territory. He dropped six of his eight punts inside the 20-yard line and forced the Tar Heels to begin drives at their own 1, 9, 10, 14, 11 and 16-yard lines. Carolina s average starting field position for the game was its own 22-yard line. For the second consecutive week, UNC gained more total offense yards, yet lost by double figures. At Oklahoma, five first-half turnovers led to defeat. At Maryland, an ineffective offense and poor field position resulted in the loss. Carolina outgained the Terps, The Tar Heels gained 4.4 yards per play and held the Terps to just 3.4 yards per snap. However, Maryland had 17 first downs, seven more than UNC. The Tar Heels scored on their first play from scrimmage as sophomore tailback Willie Parker raced around left end and split the secondary for 77 yards and a touchdown. It was Parker s longest career carry, equaled the 17th-longest in Carolina history, and was the longest run by a Tar Heel since It was, unfortunately, 28 percent of Carolina s total yardage output for the entire game. Two series later, Maryland pulled even, converting two third downs en route to a 20-yard scoring pass from Shaun Hill to wideout Jafar Williams. The scoring drive followed a 53-yard Barnard punt that the Terps killed at the 1-yard line. Carolina had to punt from its own end zone, and the Terps took over at the UNC 32. Facing 3rd-and-12 from the 20, Hill hit Williams on a drag route and Williams raced past cornerback Errol Hood to the end zone for the score. The Terps took the lead for good early in the second quarter. Barnard dropped another punt at the UNC 10-yard line and Carolina was penalized back to the 5. On third down, safety Tyrone Stewart broke past the blocking and tripped Parker in the end zone for a safety. Neither team was able to effectively move the ball over the next two quarters. Redshirt freshman Darian Durant replaced Ronald Curry at quarterback midway through the third period, and completed his first three pass attempts for 27 yards. His next throw, however, on 4th-and- 4 from the Maryland 38, was intercepted by safety Tony Jackson. The Terps marched 65 yards in 10 plays and scored on a 5-yard pass from Hill to Scooter Monroe. The key play of the scoring drive was a 12-yard run by Perry on 3rd-and-5 from the Carolina 19. Durant was intercepted on a tipped ball on the ensuing possession, giving the Terps the ball on their own 46-yard line. Maryland went 54 yards in eight plays for the game-clinching touchdown. Hill converted another third down by rushing for 11 yards on an option run. Marc Riley capped the drive by scoring from a yard out. The loss marred another fine effort by Carolina defensive end Julius Peppers, who had four tackles for losses for 21 yards, including three UNC MARYLAND First Downs Rushes-Yards Passing Yards Comp-Att-Int Plays-Total Yards (Ave) (4.4) (3.4) Punts (Ave) Fumbles-Lost Penalties/Yards Time of Possession 28:34 31:26 Individual Rushing Carolina- Parker , Curry 9-10, Moore 1-6, A. 14 Texas scored 30 unanswered points over the final 35 minutes and held Carolina to just 211 total yards as the Longhorns defeated the Tar Heels, 44-14, before 83,106 fans. Nathan Vasher set a Texas school record by returning eight UNC punts for 153 yards, including a backbreaking, 44-yard return for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Dusty Mangum kicked three field goals for the Longhorns, including a 51-yarder and a pair of late second-quarter kicks that gave Texas a lead at halftime. Texas scored in a variety of ways, although Carolina held the Longhorns highly-regarded passing game without a touchdown. Texas benefitted from an interception return for a touchdown, a punt return for a score, a long punt return that set up a short rushing touchdown and a safety. It was the second straight game in which the Tar Heels had allowed a safety. Simms completed 17 of 35 passes for only 167 yards. His longest completions of the day were 19-yarders to wideouts Roy Williams and Sloan Thomas. The Longhorns gained 326 yards, despite converting just four of 15 third-down chances. The Longhorns took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter when defensive end Cory Redding intercepted Ronald Curry s pass and dashed 22 yards down the sideline for the score. Texas forced Carolina to punt on the ensuing possession, and Vasher returned it 59 yards to the Tar Heel 5-yard line. Two plays later, Simms dove in from the one for a 14-0 lead. Carolina forced the Longhorns to punt on their first two series of the third quarter, but Texas upped its lead to on a 12-play, 89- yard march later in the third quarter. The win was John Bunting s first as UNC s head coach and was Carolina s first in 13 meetings with the Seminoles. The loss was Florida State s third in ACC competition and the Seminoles worst regular-season defeat in 16 years. Durant and Curry combined to throw for 232 yards and three touchdowns. Carolina amassed 301 total yards and held the Seminoles to just 224 yards, 190 of which came in the first two quarters. It was just the fifth time in Florida State s last 235 games the Seminoles were held to less than 10 points. The Tar Heels forced five turnovers, registered five quarterback sacks and held the Seminoles to just four of 16 on third down conversions. Peppers dominated the line of scrimmage as he made 10 tackles, including four for losses, one of which was his 25th career sack, and had an interception, his second of the season. The game began with a dominant defensive presence on both sides as the first six offensive possessions failed to produce a first down. The Seminoles did record a first down on their fourth series, but on the ensuing play, Carolina linebacker Quincy Monk stripped FSU quarterback Chris Rix of the ball after an 11-yard run and the Tar Heels took over at their 39-yard line. Freshman Darian Durant marched UNC 61 yards in nine plays for the game s first score. The Seminoles then forced UNC to punt, but center Greg Warren snapped the ball out of the end zone for a safety and a 9-7 Seminole lead. The second half was all Carolina, but the biggest play of the game may have come on the second play of the third quarter. Durant was intercepted by cornerback Stanford Samuels, but UNC fullback Madison Hedgecock forced Samuels to fumble and tailback Andre Williams recovered to return the ball to the Tar Heels. Five plays later, Durant found Chesley Borders wide open for a 52-yard touchdown to give Carolina the lead for good. A pair of Jeff Reed field goals in the third quarter increased UNC s lead to The two field goals were sandwiched around a holding penalty by Florida State that wiped out an 85-yard touchdown pass by Rix. Curry extended the lead to 27-9 when he scrambled away from pressure and threw an off-balance pass to Kory Bailey for a 53-yard score early in the final quarter. The victory was Carolina s fourth in a row on NC State s home turf and was its eighth in the last nine games against the Wolfpack. Durant was at the helm for all three of Carolina s scoring drives, although he alternated at quarterback with senior starter Ronald Curry. Durant completed 10 of 14 passes for 128 yards, and added 46 yards on nine rushes. Linebacker Quincy Monk (12 tackles) led a Carolina defense that thwarted the Wolfpack on 12 of 15 third down conversions and all three of the Pack s fourth down conversion chances. Typical of an emotion-filled rivalry game, both teams were flagged 10 times, but none of Carolina s infractions gave NC State a first down. Carolina scored first and never trailed. Midway through the opening period, Monk forced a fumble that Dexter Reid recovered at the NC State 27-yard line. Moments later, Durant hit Bailey for 14 yards and a 7-0 lead. Two series later, Rivers led the Pack 71 yards in six plays for a score. Rivers hit Cotra Jackson for 28 yards and threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Dovonte Edwards. The extra point attempt sailed wide right, however, and Carolina retained a 7-6 lead. Neither team scored again in the first half. The final nine offensive possessions in the half produced four punts, three turnovers, and a missed field goal. Durant led Carolina on an 11-play, 59- yard third-quarter march that ended with Jeff Reed kicking a 36-yard field goal to extend UNC s lead to The key play on the drive was a 28-yard completion from Durant to Sam Aiken on a 3rd-and- 8 play from the UNC 34-yard line. The Carolina defense forced the Pack to punt after three plays, and the Tar Heels again capitalized for points with another 11-play drive. Durant completed all five of his pass attempts on the drive for 71 yards and capped the series with a 19-yard scoring pass to Bailey. 17 Freshman quarterback Darian Durant passed for two touchdowns, Ronald Curry set the UNC career total offense record and Derrick Johnson made a game-saving tackle as North Carolina defeated East Carolina, Durant and Curry once again shared playing time at quarterback and combined for 21 completions in 33 attempts for 278 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. They also rushed for 52 yards. Curry had 167 yards of total offense. He connected with Kory Bailey for a 37-yard gain in the fourth quarter. On that play, Curry moved past Jason Stanicek as the school s all-time total offense leader. Durant s two passing touchdowns increased his season total to eight and established a UNC single-season freshman record. The Tar Heels overcame a slow start after East Carolina built a 10-0 lead in the first quarter and was in position to add another score. East Carolina took the game s opening kickoff and marched 75 yards in 10 plays. Quarterback David Garrard completed passes of 30 and 12 yards and had a 14-yard run to set up the first score. On 2ndand-goal from the 6, Garrard ran option right for one yard, but as he was being tackled he flipped the ball to Richard Alston who scored untouched from the 5. East Carolina tailbacks Leonard Henry and Art Brown pounded UNC on the Pirates next possession. Henry gained 45 yards on six carries and Brown added a 26-yard run as the Pirates moved to the Tar Heel 4-yard line, before settling for a 31-yard field goal by Kevin Miller. Early in the second quarter, the Pirates were at the North Carolina 28 when the momentum shifted to the Tar Heels. Garrard s pass hit the helmet of one of his blockers and UNC safety Dexter Reid intercepted at the 11-yard line. Nine plays and 89 yards later, it was Durant converted two third-down chances on a 9-yard completion to Bosley Allen and a 15-yarder to Bailey and put the Tar Heels on the score - board with a 29-yard strike to Chesley Borders. Curry led the Tar Heels to the end zone and the lead for good on UNC s first series of the third quarter. He also converted two third-down opportunities. 18 Sophomore tailback Andre Williams rushed for a careerhigh 147 yards and a touchdown and safety Dexter Reid broke open a close game with a 67- yard interception return for a touchdown as the Tar Heels beat Virginia, The win was Carolina s first over the Cavaliers since 1997 and was UNC s fourth in as many weeks. The game was an offensive showcase as the teams combined for 45 first downs and nearly 900 yards of total offense. The offenses converted 15 of 32 third-down opportunities. Carolina had 11 rushing first downs and another 10 by pass, rushed for 234 yards, averaged 6.2 yards per play, punted just three times, and converted 9 of 16 third-down chances. The Tar Heels gained a season-high 477 yards of offense. Virginia had 15 passing first downs, averaged 5.5 yards per play and completed 33 of 55 passes for 334 yards and three touchdowns. For the second consecutive week, the Tar Heels gave up a late score and needed to recover a last-minute onsides kick to clinch the victory. Williams averaged 5.2 yards per rush en route to his 147-yard day. His previous career best was 68 yards at NC State on September 29. He had a 38-yard run, the longest of his career in the first quarter, but UNC fumbled two plays later at the Cavalier 20-yard line. Later in the opening quarter, freshman quarterback Darian Durant hit Chesley Borders on a slant and Borders raced 53 yards to the Virginia 7. Williams scored around the right corner on the next play. Michael Waddell blocked a David Greene field goal try on the following series. Carolina then marched to the Virginia 24, but Durant s pass deflected off a receiver and was picked off at the 9-yard line. Virginia quarterback Matt Schaub and tailback Alvin Pearman then led the Cavaliers on a 10-play, 74-yard drive. Pearman opened the drive with a 24- yard run and Schaub capped it with a 7- yard scoring pass to Tyree Foreman. Four plays later the Tar Heels went back into the lead on a 66-yard touchdown strike from Ronald Curry to Sam Aiken. It was the longest catch of Aiken s career. By halftime, the Tar Heels had amassed 312 yards, 100 more than Virginia, but held only a advantage. The Cavaliers promptly opened the second half on a 13-play, 80-yard advance to tie the game at 17. 20 Joe Burns rushed for 198 yards and a touchdown and Georgia Tech held the Tar Heels to just 13 rushing yards as the Yellow Jackets beat North Carolina, The game was played on a Thursday evening in front of a national television audience on ESPN. Burns, who rushed for 126 yards and four scores against UNC in 2000, carried 34 times en route to the seventh-largest yardage figure ever allowed by the Tar Heels. He scored the eventual winning touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 51-yard run down the right sideline. The Yellow Jackets made several big plays on special teams. Kelly Rhino set a Georgia Tech record with 111 yards on four punt returns. Freshman quarterback Darian Durant made his first career start in place of injured senior Ronald Curry. Durant completed 22 of 37 for 286 yards. He threw for three touchdowns and was picked off once. That interception was the only turnover of the contest and led to a second quarter field goal. Durant connected with Bosley Allen nine times for 114 yards and threw for a pair of scores to Sam Aiken. It was the first time in nine games Durant started and played every snap at quarterback. Curry was unable to play due to a strained hamstring. The Yellow Jackets scored on the third play of the second quarter, but threatened the end zone in the opening quarter. Linebacker David Thornton stopped Burns on fourth-and-goal from the 1-foot line to keep the game scoreless. UNC could only manage two yards and punted from its own end zone. Tech started its next drive at the Carolina 31 and put the first points on the board four plays later. Quarterback George Godsey found Jonathan Smith on a quick slant and Smith split the UNC defense for a touchdown from 17 yards out. Durant promptly led the Tar Heels to a tying score. He had completions for 18 yards to Allen and 17 yards to Kory Bailey to move the ball to the Tech 30-yard line, then found Bailey all alone in the end zone for the score. Durant was picked off on Carolina s next possession, but a sack by Ryan Sims helped limit the Yellow Jackets to a go-ahead field goal by Luke Manget. Manget added a 25-yard field goal with two seconds left in the first half to give Tech a 13-7 advantage at the break. The Tar Heels took their only lead of the game on their initial possession of the second half. Thornton intercepted Godsey and returned the ball 19 yards to Tech s 41-yard line. Facing 3rd-and-12, Durant connected with Allen for 19 yards. Then on 3rd-and-9 from the 15, Durant fired toward the end zone. The ball was tipped by a Yellow Jacket defender, but Aiken grabbed the ball for a touchdown. Tech answered back on its next possession on an 18-play, 84-yard drive that consumed 8:47 off the clock. The Yellow Jackets converted each of its five third-down chances on the drive and scored on a 3- yard run off left tackle by Godsey. Midway through the final period Burns dashed around the right side, sprinted down the sideline and escaped from several would-be tacklers and scored on a 51-yard run.
