Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Customer Solution Case Study Global, Diversified Manufacturer Optimizes IT Infrastructure using Microsoft Platform Overview Country or Region: United States Industry: Manufacturing Customer Profile Johnson Controls Inc. (JCI), a U.S.$32 billion company, is a global leader in automotive interior experience, building efficiency and power solutions. Its automotive-related IT environment encompasses 20,000 desktops and 250 servers. Business Situation JCI had several legacy solutions built on Novell NetWare and Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0, which needed immediate upgrading to meet the organization s business needs. Solution The company upgraded its IT infrastructure to Microsoft Windows Server 2003 using Infosys Domain Migration solution. Benefits Reduced IT-administration workload Better IT infrastructure, one that is far more productive for JCI employees Significant cost saving on an annual basis Infosys innovative Domain Migration solution and standardizing on Microsoft Windows Server 2003 improved our IT responsiveness, while lowering migration and management costs. Mark D. Schoeppel, Vice President Global IT Infrastructure, Johnson Controls Inc. Johnson Controls Inc. (JCI) is a multibillion dollar corporation with worldwide leadership in automotive systems and batteries, and building environment products and services. The company had 5 terabytes of data and multiple legacy applications that were built in the early 1990s on Novell NetWare and the Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0. JCI decided to optimize its IT infrastructure and migrate the applications and its users to the latest technologies. To do this, JCI required an innovative, network-centric server migration and management solution. Infosys, Johnson Controls technology partner, successfully migrated the organization to Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and Microsoft Active Directory using its Domain Migration Solution, which is part of Infosys Catalytic IT solution suite. Significant benefits to the the company s IT group include less downtime, better manageability, and consolidation of technologies onto a unified platform.
We were very impressed by Infosys tools-based approach, because it helped complete the initiative within planned timeframes and cut our costs. Also, the Microsoft and Infosys alliance significantly helped build our confidence in the solution. Mark Schoeppel, Vice President (Global IT Infrastructure), JCI Situation Johnson Controls Inc. (JCI), founded in 1885, is headquartered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It is a global leader in interior systems, building efficiency and powerful solutions. The company s innovative automotive interiors help make driving more comfortable, safe, and enjoyable. For buildings, Johnson Controls offers products and services that optimize energy use and improve comfort and security. The company has over 1000 locations worldwide with 136,000 employees serving customers in more than 125 countries. Johnson Controls had sales revenues of U.S.$27 billion in JCI had several applications and legacy solutions built on 250 servers running different versions of Novell NetWare, including versions 4.11, 5.0, and 6.5. These solutions were spread across 20,000 desktops and 250 servers in multiple locations in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Central and South America within its interior experience and building efficiency business units. To consolidate the environment and standardize the network operating system, JCI executives decided to migrate the company s businesscritical Novell NetWare applications to the Microsoft Windows Server 2003 operating system, part of Microsoft Windows Server System integrated server software. The company s executives sought also to employ Microsoft Active Directory directory service throughout JCI s worldwide operations. This would enable the organization to lower IT costs and improve operational efficiencies. The company wanted to derive measurable results from its IT infrastructure such as reduced costs by delivering quality services, productivity and reducing the time to market. Solution The company invited multiple vendors to offer solutions for the migration. Infosys recommended its Domain Migration Solution, part of Catalytic IT solution suite, a joint Microsoft and Infosys initiative. Infosys won the contract with its innovative recommendation for a tools-based, automated, and network-driven migration that required minimum human intervention once the migration process started. We were very impressed by Infosys s tools-based approach because it helped complete the initiative within planned timeframes and cut our costs. Also, the Microsoft and Infosys alliance significantly helped build our confidence in the solution, explains Mark Schoeppel, Vice President (Global Infrastructure), Johnson Controls. Infosys executed a proof-of-
concept for Johnson Controls to prove the value of migration using proprietary tools. Solution Overview The solution presented several challenges in the planning stages. Infosys had to ensure 99 percent system availability during the migration, because each minute of a production outage meant a significant financial loss to JCI. We had approximately 20,000 desktops and 250 servers across the North and South American regions, on a variety of diverse solutions. The execution of this regional migration project was the key to completing our global Active Directory-based environment. With many of our plants operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and as justin-time production facilities, no system outages could be tolerated during the migration, explains Mark D. Schoeppel, Vice President of Global IT Infrastructure at Johnson Controls. The implementation team had to work across 250 locations with over 100 system administrators. To add to the complications, each location had heterogeneous configurations, which differed from location to location. Across these locations, about 5 terabytes of data had to be migrated as well. Infosys team members created an innovative implementation strategy that focused on automation, remote deployment and management, and integration with efficient third-party tools. Several best practices were used through the life cycle of the project to deliver more efficiency. Infosys developed detailed guidelines and checklists to minimize human error during the migration. Some examples include: Migration from Novell to an Active Directory directory service led to reduced costs for support and maintenance of the desktops, because administrators no longer needed to support the additional Novell client on a Windows desktop, as it was no longer required in Active Directory environment. Automated deployment tools developed by Infosys reduced the deployment and migration time, leading to reduced costs and risks. Mature and highly developed deployment methodologies reduced risks during the transition period, leading to almost no failed installations. Zero-touch migration was accomplished through remote management technologies. Migration Process Infosys provided a deployment dashboard to the Johnson Controls team. This unique tool was built
especially for the company s migration to Active Directory and provided a user-friendly interface for all stakeholders. The dashboard tool gave a comprehensive view of the status of deployment and a management summary of the progress and all project issues. In addition, the dashboard served as a single repository of all project documentation, checklists, and processes. The implementation was broken down into two key areas: the migration of data and PCs from both Novell NetWare and the Windows NT Server 4.0 operating system to Windows Server Migration from Novell NetWare For the Novell NetWare migration, Infosys used customized scripts and toolsets to automate the capture of information. For example, one of the tools captured desktop and server configurations, which would otherwise have been done manually thus reducing the risk of error. Infosys developed automated tools and scripts for upgrading desktop operating systems and migrating desktop applications to the new environment. Activities accomplished by these tools and scripts included installing the client software on the desktops, renaming the computers, migrating user profiles, and more. In addition, automated tools prepared user details, user groups, and file and print services for the migration from Novell to Active Directory. Infosys also customized third-party tools to meet Johnson Controls migration requirements and enhanced automation. For example, the company s IT staff wanted to modify network access permissions during the migration to ensure that nonstandard behavior from the legacy environment would not be inherited by Windows Server Since the third-party tools had limited capability, the Infosys team further customized scripts that helped increase the company s system administrators productivity by 70 percent. Migration from Windows NT Server 4.0 To migrate JCI from the older Windows NT Server 4.0 to Windows Server 2003 and Active Directory, Infosys adopted a unique and innovative solution that comprised customized sets of tools, scripts to automate the migration, and custom processes to ease the migration. Overall, this enhanced the zero-touch approach, thereby limiting the possibility of system outages. Each location had its own challenges, including the Johnson Controls operations in Mexico, where servers
were not directly managed. The unattended servers at the Mexican locations were migrated completely automatically from the Infosys global locations. This, and the overall optimization, resulted in reducing time and the cost of the project, notes Frank Koch, Manager Active Directory, Johnson Controls. Benefits The business-process optimization, consolidation of servers, and improved manageability features of Microsoft Windows Server 2003 have helped the Johnson Controls organization save time and money, and improve employee productivity. Infosys s innovative Domain Migration solution and standardizing on Microsoft Windows Server 2003 improved our IT responsiveness, while lowering migration and management costs, Schoeppel reports. Windows Server 2003 ranging from time saved on help desk calls and associated cost of people. Along with the reduction in licensing fees, the company sees an overall reduction in time and money spent on deploying and managing its IT infrastructure.
