Post Hatch Delay 5 To enhance part accuracy and reduce the effects of differential shrinkage, a new build parameter called Post Hatch Delay (PHD) was developed. This parameter is embedded in certain style files that support the PHD feature. This delay is a user-defined number of seconds to allow internal stresses to relax before the borders are drawn. To access this parameter: 1. Click the Modify Build Styles... icon. 2. Click the Edit... button in the Modify Build Styles dialog box. Figure 1: Modify Build Styles Dialog
6 3. Click the Additional Parameters... button in the Build Style Parameters dialog to open the Other Parameters dialog box. Figure 2: Build Style Parameters Dialog 4. Enter the number of seconds for Post Hatch Delay. Larger values will increase build times while improving accuracy. Figure 3: Other Parameter Dialog Note! The Additional Parameters button is only active for certain build styles where Post Hatch Delay is available. When a nonzero value is entered for Post Hatch Delay, a delay time is added on any layer with at least one hatch or fill vector greater than or equal to one inch in length. The delay is added after all the hatch and fill regions are completed and before any additional borders are drawn. If supports occur on the layer, then they will be drawn during the delay. This process optimizes throughput. After the supports finish drawing, remaining delay time will count down. Keep in mind that the default time is a good compromise between accuracy and build time.
Important! On the SLA 7000 system, when the Additional Parameters button is enabled (indicating Post Hatch Delay availability), the build style must use a Large Spot Linewidth Compensation value of 0, and it must also include a minimum of three Additional Borders with the Multiple Border Offset set to mm (0.004 inch). These parameter modifications are required due to a change in the way that border vectors are handled when Post Hatch Delay is enabled. These parameters are set up correctly in the default style files and cannot be edited to values outside of the recommended ranges. The Large Spot Linewidth Compensation value should be set to zero ONLY when Post Hatch Delay is available. Poor sidewall quality will result with other build styles if the Large Spot Linewidth Compensation value is set to zero. 7 Minor Modifications to the User Interface The Options dialog box can now be accessed via the new Options... icon, and the Part Selection List can now be opened by the new List... icon. New Color Setting Variables In addition to the previously available color customization options, this software version allows the user to adjust the colors for Unselected Outside Parts and Platform. To access this functionality: 1. Click the Options... icon or select Color under the View menu. 2. Select the Viewing tab. 3. Click the Unselected Outside Part... or 4. the Platform... button to edit the colors.
8 Figure 4: Viewing Tab of Options Dialog Part Selection Icons The software incorporates new part selection and deselection tools. The user can Select All Parts..., Select All Supports..., and Select All Parts and Supports..., or Unselect All Parts..., Unselect All Supports..., and Unselect All Parts and Supports.... The user can select individual parts with a left mouse click and deselect them by holding down the <Ctrl> key while left clicking. Additionally, holding down the <Alt> key while left clicking selects a part STL file and its corresponding support STL file.
Platform Properties Dialog Box 9 Open the new Platform Properties dialog box to view current machine and platform configuration characteristics such as Machine Type, Machine Extents, Resin, Blade Type, Minimum Support Height, Slice Resolution, Build Parameters, Build Directory, Number of STLs, Extents of STLs, and Volume of Parts. To access this dialog: 1. Click the Platform Properties... icon, or select Properties>Platform... from the View menu. Figure 5: Platform Properties Dialog The information in this dialog box is view only. To edit Platform Configuration, unload the platform and then click the Load Empty Build Platform... icon to open the New Platform Configuration dialog box.
10 Updated Part Properties Dialog Box The Part Properties dialog box has been modified so that you can select additional parts and modify STL files with the dialog open. The information in the Part Properties dialog will update as you change the STL files. The dialog has also been updated to improve clarity. Click the Part Properties... icon to open an abridged version of the dialog box that includes only the part extents information. To access the Surface Area, Volume, and Triangles information: 1. Click the More Info... button. Figure 6: Complete Part Properties Dialog 2. Click the Other Info... button to revert back to the extents information. Figure 7: Abridged Part Properties Dialog
New STL Display Options 11 Part and support STL files can be displayed in Point Cloud mode. When active, the part or support STL files will be depicted as points that occur at the triangle vertices. This mode is useful as it provides a sense of overall part shape and it tends to update faster when the part or view orientation changes. To enable this option: 1. For parts, click the Parts as Point Cloud... icon. 2. For supports, click the Supports as Point Cloud... icon. These options are also available under the View menu as Part Display>Point Cloud and Supports Display>Points. Additionally, the user can choose whether to display supports by clicking the check box under Part Display Preference. Figure 8: Parts Display Preference
12 Changes Subsequent to 3D Lightyear 1.2 Software Style Files for Accura SL Materials 3D Systems is pleased to offer its Accura line of SL materials. Default parameters and build style files have been created to support this new line of materials and the naming convention for the style files has been improved. This improvement simplifies the users ability to manually select style files. The new naming convention is as follows: Part Supt QCST = QuickCast 2.0 FAST = FAST EXCT = EXACT THIN = ThinLayer GNRL = General NFLT = Near Flat Downfacing TVOL =Trapped Volume DLCT = Delicate LFLT = Large Flat D = Doctor Blade Style Part_accuGen100_EXCT_0040in_GNRL_D.RCS Resin Type Layer Thickness (0040in = inch 1000mm = mm) RCS = Recoat Style STY = Build Style GNRL = General NFLT = Near Flat Downfacing TVOL =Trapped Volume DLCT = Delicate LFLT = Large Flat accugen100_gnrl.frg Resin Type FRG = Generates FinePoint Supports SRG = Generates Curtain Supports Figure 9: Naming Convention of STY, RCS, and FRG Files The format for the new style files for the Accura SL materials has changed so new parameters could be incorporated with their release. While style files from previous versions of the software can be loaded and used in the 3D Lightyear 1.3 software, the style files for the Accura line of SL materials are not backward compatible with older versions.
Smart Best Surface Finish 13 Note! Accura styles have been modified to take advantage of the techniques and utilities offered in Lightyear 1.3 software. Smart Best Surface Finish is a technique that works with Accura styles only. The hatching and filling technique known as Best Surface Finish, previously located in the Buildstation software (see the Buildstation Software 5.1 User Guide Addendum), has been relocated to the 3D Lightyear 1.3 software to improve user flexibility. Customers can now apply the option to particular STL files on a platform where the benefit is balanced against the throughput reduction. Moreover, the feature has been enhanced so that instead of applying to every hatched and filled layer of the part, it now applies only to layers with upfacing regions and a few layers prior to those upfacing regions. The resulting improvement in throughput with the feature activated has earned it the new title Smart Best Surface Finish in the 3D Lightyear 1.3 software. Note! Parts built with Smart Best Surface Finish activated are still expected to build more slowly than parts where it is deactivated, however, they may build more rapidly than parts built with Best Surface Finish activated in earlier versions of the Buildstation software. The throughput differences depend highly on part geometry. To activate the Smart Best Surface Finish option: 1. Click the Modify Build Styles icon. 2. Activate the feature by clicking the Smart Best Surface Finish check box in the Modify Build Styles dialog box (see Figure 1). Different Layer Thicknesses Available in a Single Build Lightyear 1.3 software accommodates different layer thicknesses in a single build. Use this feature with caution. For example, do not have two parts in a single build with the same Zheight and different layer thickness. 3D Systems recommends only transitioning FROM NON-CYLCIC styles to cyclic styles. Transitioning from a cyclic style to a non-cyclic style can result in insufficient exposure at the interface between the two styles, which will result in layer delamination and crashes. For the same reason, you should never mix two different cyclic styles.
14 Preferred Blade Gap in 3D Lightyear Software The Preferred Blade Gap parameter, previously located in the Buildstation software has been moved to the RCS file in the 3D Lightyear software. This change has two advantages: Eliminates the need to confirm the resin record in order to verify the Preferred Blade Gap each time a part is built on the SLA system. Allows different values to be used in a single build in case the user changes recoating styles to accommodate a change in the build style at a certain Zrange (for example, if the layer thickness changes partway through the build). Keep in mind that varying layer thickness in a build may cause build problems. The parameter can be viewed in the Recoat Style Parameters dialog box. Figure 10: Recoat Style Parameters Dialog Box with Preferred Blade Gap
Loading SLI Files as Models 3D Lightyear 1.3 software allows SLI files to be loaded on a platform similar to STL or SLC models. This allows users to slice builds on multiple computers or to slice STL files as they are available before grouping them into a build file. The slice thickness of the SLI file must be identical to the layer thickness being used on the platform. The Prepare function will not reslice the object but will converge it with the other sliced models into the BFF file. This allows a large platform of parts to be split and each part can be sliced on a different workstation at the same time, which reduces the slice time considerably. Then load all the slice files onto a single platform and click Prepare. Note that you can move the SLI files in X-Y as needed. 15 Slicing Note! Accura styles have been modified to take advantage of the techniques and utilities offered in Lightyear 1.3 software. The Slicing utility requires Accura styles. A new utility has been added to the Zslice algorithm to improve the quality of the sliced data. This utility is helpful in reducing the presence of border bits (an incorrect piece of a border sticking on the side of the part) and layer mismatch problems that were evident on certain geometries in earlier versions. Auto Part Placement on Viper si2 SLA Systems When a Viper si2 system is in the High Resolution mode, the Auto Part Placement function is now within the 5.0 in x 5.0 in x 10.0 in build area. Advanced Licenses There are no more standard licenses for Lightyear software. All users will receive advanced licenses.
16 Part and Support can be Moved as a Single Component In Lightyear 1.3 software, the part and support can now be moved together as a single component. Graphical Indicators for Slicing Status When slicing multiple STL files on a single platform, the display color of each model will change when it completes slicing. This display gives the user an indication of the status of the slicing operations. The user can specify the color change in the Viewing tab of the Options dialog box (see Figure 4). 1. Click the Options icon. 2. Select the Viewing tab. 3. Click the Unselected Sliced Part or Selected Sliced Part buttons and edit the colors as desired. A second graphical indicator, Display Slice Plane, displays the progression of the slicing operation through the planes of the part. This display gives the user an indication of the status of the slicing operation as it is occurring. The user can turn this indicator on or off during slicing by clicking the check box under Parts Display Preference. Displaying the slice plane SLOWS down the slicing process due to graphical updates consuming the CPU time. Note! Selecting the Display Slice Plane preference may slow down the slicing operation, depending on the capability of the workstation performing the operation. This function can be turned on and off while slicing, therefore you may wish to only turn it on only while you need to see the slicing status. Figure 11: Parts Display Preference
Ignore Close CAD Vertices This feature enables you to choose whether or not to create support strands for ALL downfacing triangles. Set Ignore Close CAD Vertices to zero to support all down facing triangles. Set Ignore Close CAD Vertices to one and some downfacing triangles will be unsupported. It is recommended that you support all downfacing triangles when triangles are larger than 0.25 inches. Note! This feature is useful only if the parts are small and highly tessellated (all downfacing triangle vertices 0.25 inch or less). Otherwise it might create unsupported corners on larger triangles. Note! The downfacing surface is defined by the minimum support angle. Please refer to the online Help system or to the 3D Lightyear SLA File Preparation Software User s Guide, Version 1.0 for additional information. 17 To access this parameter. Figure 12: Support Strands Too Close Together 1. If you are using an Accura material FRG file, skip to Step 5. All other FRG files will not have the Ignore Close Cad Vertices parameter. To add this parameter, complete Steps 2 through After creating supports, select Edit Supports from the Tools menu. 3. Select a support region and click Save in the Styles section of the dialog box to save the style. 4. Provide a unique name for the new FRG file and click Save. 5. Open the FRG file in a text editor.
18 6. At the end of the file, locate the parameter Ignore Close Cad Vertices and change the value to Save and close the FRG file. 8. Make the modified FRG file the default Support Generation Style in your platform configuration. 9. Re-create supports for the part used in this procedure with the new FRG file in order to take advantage of the new parameter. Parts will now be supported as shown in Figure 13. Figure 13: Supports Strands when Ignore Close Cad Vertices is Used Use of Small Feature Preservation Many enhancements have been made to slice for Accura materials styles which may eliminate some need to use the Small Feature Preservation option. These enhancements eliminate border bits and other part artifacts while the Small Feature Preservation option can induce these. The best approach is to first slice with Small Feature Preservation turned off, and then look at the BFF in Lightyear software to verify that the features of concern are acceptable. If they are not acceptable, slice with Small Feature Preservation turned on, and then look at the BFF in Lightyear software to verify that the geometry of the part is correct.
Viper si2 SLA System 19 The Viper si2 SLA system is 3D Systems newest addition to the stereolithography product line. This system incorporates a new solid state laser capable of building parts in two modes: Normal resolution mode utilizing a mm (0.010 inch) beam size High resolution mode utilizing a mm (0.003 inch) beam size The Machine Setup Wizard has been configured to support each of these modes. 1. Click the Machine Setup Wizard... button. 2. In the Step 1: Machine Setup Wizard dialog box, select Viper or ViperHR in the Machine Type text box. Fill out the Name text box and select the Resin Type as appropriate. Click Next. Figure 14: Machine Setup Wizard for the Viper si2 in Normal Resolution Mode 3. Continue through Steps 2-4 of the Machine Setup Wizard. Select the units, the build style and the layer thickness parameters. See the online Help system or the 3D Lightyear SLA File Preparation Software User s Guide for Version 1.0 for more information.
20 Important! When building in high resolution mode, the maximum recommended build envelope for X, Y and Z is: 5.0 in x 5.0 in x 10.0 in (127.0 mm x mm x mm) Building parts outside of this range can result in part inaccuracy, delamination and build failure. When a ViperHR machine configuration is active, the platform display will reveal the full possible build extents for a Viper si2 system. In addition, a smaller green square will highlight the recommended build envelope. Normal resolution mode and high resolution mode cannot be included in the same BFF file. Different STY and RCS files have been optimized for each mode. Build style files with appropriate parameters are located in the...\3d Lightyear 1.3 styles directory structure. Build styles for normal resolution mode are located in the Viper folder structure, and build styles for high resolution mode are located in the ViperHR folder structure. ************************************** 2002 by 3D Systems.
