Executive Director Office of Information Technology January 2008 to September, 2014 Duties included providing input into the technological direction of the University, coordinating the efforts ofthe various IT groups on campus, promoting a secure network and computing environment, supporting instructional and multimedia needs of the faculty, and providing leadership to the Office of Information Technology, including a staff of 130. Director of Campus Networking Office of Information Technology September 2001 to December 2007 Duties included management ofthe Auburn University Campus Network, University Network Security, Network-related customer support, and strategic planning for network infrastructure. The Campus Network includes both wired and wireless network infrastructure, at on-campus and off-site locations. Remote access for facu lty and staff is provided via dial-up and VPN services. The Network Security team is responsible for managing campus firewalls, intrusion detection & prevention systems, and VPN services; conducting network security audits; responding to security incidents; and generating awareness ofsecurity threats to the campus community. Infrastructure planning and upgrade management included the total rewiring of many of the campus buildings, and the complete redesign and rebuild of the campus fiber infrastructure. Special projects such as developing secure, authenticated wireless access and providing network access to on-campus housing also comprise a significant portion ofthe job. Bliss Bailey Page 1 of5
2 Campus Network Administrator Campus Telecommunications/ETV September 1996 to September 2001 Primary duty was the management ofthe Auburn University Campus network, known as AU Net. AU Net consisted of 10,000 nodes on a multi-protocol network reaching over 150 buildings and numerous remote sites. Additional duties included the design, construction, implementation and continued maintenance of ResNet, the 3,300 connection residential network used to provide Ethernet connectivity to the on-campus residents of Auburn University on a subscription basis. Lead Systems Programmer Division of University Computing September, 1992 to September 1996 Duties consisted primarily of the administration of multi-user UNIX-based systems. These SUN servers and workstations were used on a University-wide basis for course instruction, e mail, Usenet News distribution, and various research projects. Also managed Sun workstations and servers used for research purposes within the Department ofphysics and the School of Forestry. Computing Support Specialist Division of University Computing September, 1989 to September, 1992 Provided direct user support for University personnel in the use ofcommon desktop software. Conducted short courses and workshops designed to instruct faculty and staff in the use of computing and networking resources. Experience also included the installation of publicaccess computing labs, the configuration ofmicrocomputer-based office automation systems for University departments, and providing support for users by providing technical consultation regarding the purchase of hardware and software. EDUCATION & TRAINING Completed the Frye Institute - a program designed for those in higher education who aspire to more significant leadership roles, including disciplinary faculty, librarians, information technology professionals, and administrators Completed the Educause Leadership Institute - a program designed for individuals who occupy or aspire to senior level positions in higher education information technology organizations. Education and training while working as the campus network administrator includes courses in Cisco Router configuration, LAN Switching systems, and ATM network design and configuration. 3 Education and training while working as a system administrator included a number of professional development courses and workshops covering a variety of topics including the following: Internetworking Novell LAN's; 1991 NetWorld tutorials and exhibition; 1992 InterOp tutorials covering TCP/IP Communications and the X.500 White Pages System; 1993 USENIX Large Installation System Administration Conference; 1995 USENIX general conference; 1996 SANS System and Network Security Conference and tutorials, and Sun System Administration training for SunOS 4.X and Solaris 2.X. Awarded a Master of Management Information Systems degree from Auburn University in August of Awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in Business, specializing in Hotel, Restaurant, and Tourism Administration from the University ofnew Orleans in May of KEY PROJECTS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS Hired the University's first Information Security Officer and repositioned the Information Security team to have broader responsibility and authority Partnered with Dean Nick Giordano and campus researchers and administrators to fund and procure the Hopper Computing Cluster. "Hopper" is the second generation of research computing cluster operated and supported by OIT staff at Auburn University Led the effort to implement a Cyber Security Awareness Training program that reached l 00% of the full-time faculty and staff ofthe University Collaborated with Procurement and Payment Services to negotiate the first multi-vendor computer purchasing contract that provides the flexibility and pricing demanded by the University community, and meets the requirements of the state examiners and state bid law Partnered with Dr. Weikuan Yu on the proposal "CC-NIE Network Infrastructure: Enhancing Connectivity for Multidisciplinary Scientific Research and Education at Auburn University". The proposal was accepted and funded in the amount of $488, Accepted the 2013 "Spirit of Sustainability" award on behalf of OIT, in recognition of the sustainable design of the OIT data center, and the positive impact of OIT' s aggressive move to implement server virtualization technology Partnered with Dr. John Liu, now Associate Provost and Associate Vice President ofresearch, to oversee the design, construction, and operation of the CA SIC Computing Cluster. This project marked the return of OIT into the realm ofcentral research computing support Present - Participating in the Associate Provost's elearning Workgroup to promote, explain, and clarify issues related toe-learning, and provide input for the development ofrelated items in the University Strategic Plan. 4 Subscribed to the lncommon Certificate Service, in order to provide unlimited SSL, extended validation, client, and code signing certificates to the entire University community to promote and support an enhanced cybersecurity environment Joined lncommon trust fabric on behalf of the University, providing the foundation for federated identity services across the lnternet2/incommon community Presented at the Campus Technology Summit in Palm Springs, CA, on "Changing LMS Solutions", detailing Auburn's selection ofa new Learning Management System and our move into the cloud for this service Initiated and funded a project to create an active learning space known as the Incubator Classroom. This project has resulted in the creation of a second, larger active learning space, and serves as a proving ground for the design of classrooms in the Mell Classroom Building that is currently under construction Authorized Auburn's participation in MS-ISAC, the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center, a federally funded organization devoted to cyber security Authorized Auburn's participation in the Higher Education Information Security Roundtable, including information security professionals from around Alabama. This group has grown to include participants from nearby states, as well Formed the Instructional Technology Council to foster communication among campus instructional designers and technology specialists, and to share information about the design and assessment of learning initiatives, and the implementation of new instructional technology Managed the client-side portion ofthe design and construction ofa new OIT building for Auburn University. The 65,000 square foot facility provides office space for 130 IT Specialists and a 5,000 square foot data center containing the University's core administrative systems, learning management infrastructure, data storage facilities, and academic and research systems. The building was completed in February of2011, on time and under budget Directed a series of projects that resulted in the upgrade of existing data networking hub locations into advanced facilities, and also in the construction of new, resilient facilities that brought an unprecedented level of redundancy and survivability to the campus network. These projects laid the groundwork and served as proving grounds for the design ofthe new OIT data center Directed the design and implementation of the updated campus fiber backbone of Auburn University, including redundant fiber links to over one hundred buildings, and an advanced switching architecture designed to maximize throughput and reliability Directed the design and upgrade of data cabling and switching equipment in 54 buildings across the Auburn University campus with a minimum of disruption and below budgeted costs Designed and managed the implementation of the Campus wireless network. 5 200 I - Designed and implemented the University's first Internet-2 Connection through the Southern Crossroads (SoX) regional network. 200 I - Traveled to Vietnam as a consultant with the Southeast Consortium for International Development (SECID). Worked with IT staffat Vietnam National University in Ho Chi Minh City to review the network design they were to submit as part ofa World Bank grant proposal. The proposal was funded Managed the design and implementation ofa wide-area network connecting 40 remote offices and locations throughout the state of Alabama to the Auburn University network Managed the team that brought the campus network infrastructure into Y2K compliance Selected as a member of the core team in the 1999 "IBM Study" of information technology services and governance at Auburn University Designed the network and managed the team that constructed "ResNet", an authenticated Ethernet-based residential network serving campus residents of Auburn University. ResNet was upgraded several times, and was eventually incorporated into the campus-wide wireless network Advised the Lee County Board of Education in the design of a county-wide data network that would tie all of their schools into a unified system and provide the backbone for all administrative processes and early efforts at on line learning and videoconferencing.
