Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain.
2 Research Experience Starting 2012: VIPS Independent Postdoctoral Fellow. Max F. Perutz Laboratories, Vienna, Austria. Independent Postdoc of the Vienna International Postdoctoral Program (VIPS), associated with the lab of Dr. Florian Raible. The VIPS program supports young researchers in establishing themselves as independent investigators. The goal of my project is to investigate the evolution of stem cell gene regulatory networks. As the first step towards this goal, at present I am establishing a sponge stem cell system for gene regulatory network analysis : Marie-Curie and EMBO Postdoctoral Fellow. Institute of Molecular Pathology, Vienna, Austria. In the laboratory of Dr. Meinrad Busslinger, I contributed to the elucidation of the gene regulatory network that controls B cell development in the mouse. The elucidated network was based on genome-wide analyses (RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, and others) performed on mouse primary cells. In particular, I was the first to apply the RNA-seq technique at the Institute of Molecular Pathology, and therefore I established the experimental protocol and bioinformatics methods to analyze the data. I also performed ChIP-seq and CAGE-seq (Cap Analysis of Gene Expression), and devised computational methods to integrate the different genome-wide techniques to extract relevant gene regulatory network information (see [2] under Publications ) : PhD student in Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics. Supervised by Norman Chandler Professor of Cell Biology Eric H. Davidson. I collaborated in the elucidation of the gene regulatory network that controls the early development of the sea urchin embryo. In particular, I developed quantitative techniques that are being used in cisregulatory analysis, I studied the transcriptional control of one of the genes involved in the regulatory network, and I identified a repressor transcription factor with a key role in the network (see [3] and [4] under Publications ). The development of this gene network represented the first of its kind (see [5], [6] and [7] under Publications ) : Independent Research Associate in collaboration with Ecole Normale Superieure de Cachan, France. Research project on clustering of a molecular dynamics trajectory with a Hamming distance, T.T.S.A.C, Manresa, Spain. Supervised by Dr. Jacques Gabarro-Arpa (CR1, CNRS), from Ecole Normale Superieure de Cachan, France. Based on the properties of discrete point arrangements we introduced the concept of dynamical activity, which allows one to formulate a simple double criterion for locating clusters of homologous conformers in a molecular dynamics trajectory. This collaboration resulted in Publication [8], which has served as the foundation for other works (Laboulais et al. 2002; Proteins. May 1;47(2):169-79). June 1997-August 1997: Nuffield Foundation Undergraduate Bursary funded research project on nanolithography. University of Bristol, Bristol, UK. Supervised by Professor Walther Schwarzacher. The research project consisted of using the Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) and the Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) among other techniques in order to study the physical properties of electrochemically deposited ultrathin films of organic materials on several substrates. This project was part of a larger effort devoted to the use of electrochemical deposition to prepare ultrathin films and nanostructures with unique physical properties.
3 : Research project on microbiology funded by Consejo Superior de Investigacion y Ciencia (CSIC) of Spain. Camp d Aprenentatge del Bages, Manresa, Spain. Supervised by Dr. Josep M. Gasol, researcher of the Insistut de Ciencies del Mar, CSIC, Barcelona, Spain. As a result of a research project carried out during my high school year ( Analysis of the microscopic life of the Agulla Lake and the Sequia River ), which was awarded a Premi CIRIT in 1993 (see under Honours and Awards ), the Spanish research organization Consejo Superior de Investigacion y Ciencia (CSIC) funded a continuation of the project, which consisted of a one year investigation of the microscopic life of the Agulla Lake.
