Progress of SIGC -Coastal Geographical Information System Filippo D Ascola, Angela Barbano ISPRA -Istituto Superiore per la Protezione e la Ricerca Ambientale Dip.to Tutela Acque Interne e Marine - Servizio Difesa delle Coste Sede di Roma, Via Curtatone, 3 Tel angela.barbano@isprambiente.it, filippo.dascola@isprambiente.it
Reasons behind the SIGC One of tasks of ISPRA concerns analisys of both the national territory shoreline development and of the coastal defence actions in order to safeguard the coast against erosions phenomenons and analisys of coastal managment plans SIGC is a tool that gathers datas and processes information in order to produce: Representation of natural and anthropic elements that define coastal areas; Studies and reports about state of coastal areas in Italy; Specific areas studies and surveys
Features of SIGC Nation-wide representation Uniform data and maps for the whole country
SIGC from 1950 to 1999: basic elements Raster data: historic maps and digital photos Vector data that concern: Administrative division; Infrastructures; Enviromental and costal information
SIGC (1/3) : examples of layers processed Phisiographic and morphologic units Measurement network (buoy wave meters and tide gauge stations) and areas of coastline for wave climate Harbours,
SIGC (2/3) : shorelines processed LC 1950 (from historic maps, homogeneous, 1:25000) LC 2000 (from digital photo 1999, homogeneous, 1:10000, analyzed 1:5000/1:3000)
SIGC (3/3) : attributes of shorelines layers Natural: low, high Artificial: coastal works, harbours, maritime infrastructures
SIGC : shoreline variation Procedure: buffer, overlap, change detection
The evolution in SIGC: new reference data Using the same methology: References to digital photos ; Updates and addictions; Buffer: +/- 5m
SIGC 2007 (1/3) : shoreline processed LC2007: same methodology, better outcome (for ex. correction imprecisions e integration of hidden areas)
SIGC 2007 (2/3) : backlines processed Acquisition methodology: photointerpretation and digitalizzation of aerial digital photos and Definition: Type 1 = natural vegetation and farmed lands Type 3 = factitious rivers outfall, harbours, shoreline adherent works Type 2 = artificial artifacts, and infrastructures
SIGC 2007 (3/3) : layer beaches processed Beach maps (from lines to polygons): based on two linear and continous borders, the shoreline and the backline; Definition by surface, width, lenght and trend evolution. Beach lines 2010 Beach polygons
Analysis SIGC 2007 (1/8) : evolution of coastal areas (Punta s Aliga a Portoscuso) m m
Analysis SIGC 2007 (2/8) : evolution of coastal areas (Sinni s outfall) m 500 m 1950
Analysis SIGC 2007 (3/8) : developmentof coastal works (Margherita di Savoia)..and between 1999 and 2007 Works before 1999
Analysis SIGC 2007 (4/8) : changes and enlargments of harbours (Varazze)
Analysis SIGC 2007 (5/8): coastal dynamics (Adriatic Sea) Changes and coastal risk: beachs m 215 m 215 m
Analysis SIGC 2007 (6/8):coastal dynamics (Dorgali) Changes and coastal risk: high coast
Analysis SIGC 2007 (7/8) : anthropic actions (Badolato) Problems related to coastal defence works, maritime infrastructures and harbours
Analysis SIGC 2007 (8/8) : anthropic actions (Tortolì) Urbanistic development issues
Elaborations of SIGC 2007(1/2) : Statystics The coastal evolution and the coastal work trends are shown by statystical elaborations and datas (linear and superficial) nationwide local per phisiographic unit
Elaborations of SIGC 2007 (2/2) : Statystics Update of both format of statistics and summary data of LC 2000
Future developments Data pubblication: webgis and reports Consolidation and updating of the periodical monitoring system (aerial digital photos )
