3 1. The High Speed Mediopadana station in the European and Italian context. Reggio Emilia (IT) is located on the High Speed Line Milano-Bologna

4 2. The High Speed railway in Reggio Emilia. Reggio Emilia is a middle-sized city located between two big cities, Milano and Bologna The main Milano Bologna infrastructural system

5 2. The High Speed railway in Reggio Emilia. The High Speed railway station of Reggio Emilia will be an on the line station, located in a peripheral area. The HS station will be called Mediopadana, because of its vocation to not be a station for a single city, but for all the neighbouring provinces

Junction-cities on the High Speed network Junctions of the High Speed network = HSL stations = cities hosting the station The specific case of in-between cities Focus on in-between cities : middle-sized cities located between the main national and EU centres HSL is an opportunity for:. a local project of development. a wider project of economical, social and cultural re-connection with Europe HS stations have to be linked to the surrounding territory, especially through local transport systems and direct linkages with road viability (especially hjghway). The station has to work as an INTER-MODAL JUNCTION, in order to become a sort of TURBINE, transforming the infrastructural currents in new development pushes for the city (see exemple of Lille) HS network as European network not only at an infrastructural level

Focus on Transport and Infrastructures Problems tunnel effect : the arrival of the HSL favours some centres (those disposing of a HSL station) to the detriment of the others Potentialities HSL, making possible connections at a wide scale, can contribute to a development and an expansion of the public transport system at a local and regional level Possible actions regionalisation and collectivisation of HS lines: putting in network of the two systems:. The main system (HSL). The secondary but more widespread system (regional and local lines) In order to make the two systems accessible to as many users as possible

Focus on Transport and Infrastructures Local accessibility of HS station (parking) FER line Preliminary ideas for Reggio: Pedestrian access Local accessibility Hyphothethic building for highway stationing area HSL Highway A1. Through the local railway transport system, the HS station will be effectively linked to the city centre and the other excellences of the city. The local railway system could be strengthened. The HS station will be located next to the highway. The two infrastructures (highway and high speed line) could be put in synergy through a parking and interchange area next to the HS station. Here highway, HSL, local railway lines and local viability could be directly connected. > The whole territory can benefit from the new connections > More flow of people, good and ideas

15 Conclusions The strategies here described should act on the urban context characteristics, in terms of:. facilities (especially transport system, already existing; and new structures, to be conceived). wide and diversified economical and cultural offer These strategies should be useful for increasing Reggio capacity to be a catalysing magnet for people and activities. The Hs station will work as a pumping city, a mover pumping uninterruptedly people through the transport system (van Winden): this also means, more relationships, more exchanges, more exchanged products and ideas. The local transport system, if well increased, will help minor centres to come into contact with major centres, allowing more efficient exchanges > Reggio Emilia has to exploit the arriving of HSL for opening itself to new linkages and relationships ( union of pre-existing elements for new and useful combinations ) > Reggio Emilia has to extend benefits of the HSL to its whole territory, in order to regenerate the whole territory (in terms of attractiveness, competitiveness and innovation)
