2 We re just getting started! In 1971, public transportation began serving the residents and visitors of Palm Beach County. In the last 40 years, the county has grown and flourished and so has its public transit provider. Today, Palm Tran is better than ever. Palm Tran travels to every major destination in Palm Beach County from Jupiter to Boca Raton and from Palm Beach to the Glades. Commuter buses run from Martin County to downtown West Palm Beach. Buses run 7 days a week serving more than 3, bus stops. Ridership continues to grow and break records. Our fixed-route service in 2011 carried over 11 million annual passengers for the first time and averaged in excess of 40,000 passengers per weekday during several months. Fixed-route ridership is up almost 50% since 4 and compared to the same time period in 2010, increased by 8%. To add to those numbers, we ve made some improvements to our fleet of buses. Palm Tran now has 26 environmentally-friendly hybrid electric buses. Hybrid buses provide improved fuel efficiency and lower emissions than their diesel counterparts. Six new articulated buses will be added to the Palm Tran fleet in early Designed for busy, crowded routes, these articulated buses are often called a bus and a half because they can hold up to 80 passengers. Palm Tran BRT Hybrid Bus 8 Co-Tran circa 1979 Palm Tran Articulated Bus - Coming Mid 2012 CONNECTION, Palm Tran s paratransit division, continues to provide outstanding service for the County s senior and disabled population. On a typical weekday 3, requests for service are scheduled using 170 vans per day. The CONNECTION team uses specialized scheduling software to best group passengers together in order to multi-load and achieves maximum efficiency. It is efforts like this that are helping Palm Tran hold the line on costs, improve service delivery, and increase customer satisfaction. 4 Getting Started Palm Tran buses run throughout the day, every day of the week. We serve Palm Beach County north from Jupiter to Boca Raton, and west from the Glades to A1A. The Rider s Guide contains maps and schedules of each route. Follow these helpful hints to get you started! 1. Use the Rider s Guide to determine which route(s) you need to take to reach your destination. You can review maps and schedules for all the routes, or call Customer Service at (561) 841-4BUS (4287) or (toll-free). Just let us know where and when you want to go, and we will instruct you on which route(s) to take. 2. Once you ve determined which route to take and the schedule for your bus, find the nearest bus stop sign. The bus route number is indicated on the sign. 3. As the bus approaches, stand up and become visible so the bus operator knows you want to board. Stand away from the curb until the bus comes to a complete stop. Make sure you have your QUIK Pass or exact change ready. 4. When you enter the bus, watch your step! If the step is too high, ask the bus operator to lower it by having the bus kneel. All Palm Tran buses can kneel, accommodating passengers with special needs. 5. Once you are on the bus, read the fare rates on the farebox. If you qualify for a half fare, show your proper identification card to the bus operator. (See pages 4 and 5 for half fare information). 6. Have a seat and enjoy the ride. As a courtesy, please allow the front seats to remain open for senior citizens or for passengers using wheelchairs. 7. As your stop approaches, pull down the stop indicator cord running along each side of the bus. The operator will stop at the next bus stop. 8. Wait until the bus has come to a complete stop before exiting through the rear door. Remember to check for traffic after you ve exited the bus. Weekday schedules are indicated with a solid banner 4 Weekend schedules are indicated with an outline banner Route and day of the week. Direction the bus is traveling. Timepoints. Each route has several scheduled timepoints. There are bus stops every 3-4 blocks between the indicated timepoints. When planning your trip, use the timepoint before your location to estimate when the bus will reach your stop. 2

5 Ride by the Rules For the safety and comfort of all passengers, please observe the following rules while riding a Palm Tran bus. Weapons are not allowed on any public transit vehicle except when in the possession of a law enforcement officer. As a courtesy, please allow the front seats of the bus to remain open for passengers using wheelchairs. All wheelchair passengers should utilize the safety straps located in the front of the bus. If you ask, the bus operator will be glad to help. Eating, drinking smoking and spitting are not allowed. Passengers should dress appropriately. Shirt shoes are required. You may play your MP3, radio, CD or tape player but only with headphones and at a low volume. Service and assistant animals accompanied by their owner will be allowed to board. Keep carry-on items out of the aisle including carts and strollers. Please do not talk to or distract the bus driver while the bus is in motion. Always stand behind the standee line near the front doors while the bus is in motion. Passenger(s) who cause a disturbance on the bus or who interfere with the safe operation of the bus and/or who vandalize the bus will be subject to removal or arrest. Bikes on Buses (B.O.B.) cannot accommodate mopeds, gas or battery powered motor bikes or scooters of any kind, or tandem bicycles. Portable bikes and scooters (only if secured into a carrying case or bag) are allowed inside the bus. When departing, be sure to take your belongings with you. Palm Tran is not responsible for items left on the bus, at the bus stops, or at the Intermodal Transit. No loitering. Only transit related activities are permitted at our bus stops and Intermodal Transit. Please be courteous to other passengers when using cell phones. Signal your stop request at least one block in advance. Exit through the rear doors and step clear of the bus. Take your belongings with you. 3

6 Cash Fares Single Trip $1.50 Single Trip Half Fare 75 Single Trip Each single trip is $1.50. Review the QUIK Pass information if you will be using Palm Tran more than twice in one day. There are no transfers between Palm Tran buses; you must pay an additional full fare. With Valid Tri-Rail Transfer or Ticket: Train Station to Bus $0.50 Boarding at any other location will be regular fare With Valid Broward County Transit (BCT) Transfer: $0.50 If connecting from Palm Tran to BCT ask the driver for a free BCT Transfer Exact Change Use exact change, there is no cash refund. The farebox does not make change. A fare card will be issued for over-payment in excess of $1.00 which can be used towards future rides on Palm Tran. Palm Tran is not responsible for damaged or lost cards. YOU MAY DEPOSIT MORE THAN THE FARE, BUT THE FAREBOX DOES NOT MAKE CHANGE AND THE BUS OPERATOR DOES NOT HANDLE CASH. DO NOT INSERT PAPER OR TICKETS INTO COIN SLOT. Half Fare Requirements Passengers riding for a half fare or using a reduced fare QUIK Pass must be able to present identification when boarding the bus which can include: Senior - any person 65 years or older with a photo ID issued by Palm Tran, a valid driver s license or Florida State ID card. A Florida State Identification card can be obtained from the Drivers License Bureau. Student - age 21 or under. Must show valid school ID. Disabled - any person who has received a half fare ID issued by Palm Tran or our paratransit division, Palm Tran CONNECTION, based on documented disabilities. See page 14 regarding paratransit requirements. Medicare - Recipient must show their Medicare card to receive a half fare. Please note: Customers with a Medicaid card do not receive a half fare. Customers with a Veterans Administration card marked Service Connected receive a half fare. Free Fare Requirements The following may ride Palm Tran for free if one of these requirements is met: Children 8 and under ride free when accompanied by a fare paying passenger. Police officer in uniform or with badge. Rates are subject to change 4

Unlimited 1-day $4.00 $2.75 Reduced* The Unlimited 1-day Unlimited 1-day Reduced QUIK passes are valid for unlimited rides all day in all directions of travel. This easy-to-use pass is ideal for passengers using more than one bus to their destination. The Unlimited 1-day and Unlimited 1-day Reduced can be purchased on the bus by inserting the required amount into the fare box. They can also be purchased from the West Palm Beach Palm Tran office or by mail. Unlimited 31-day $60.00 $45.00 Reduced* The Unlimited 31-day Unlimited 31-day Reduced QUIK passes are good for unlimited rides for 31 consecutive days beginning the first day of use, regardless of which day of the month it is first validated. If you ride more than 40 times in a 31-day period, this pass will save you time and money. These passes cannot be purchased on the bus; they must be purchased in advance by mail or at one of our QUIK Pass outlets listed below.
