Driving intelligent communications at airports
INTELLIGENT AIRPORTS ARE MORE EFFICIENT IN RUNNING INFRASTRUCTURE, MORE AGILE IN WORKING WITH THEIR PARTNERS AND MORE EFFECTIVE IN THEIR DECISION-MAKING. 2
EXECUTIVE OVERVIEW The communications infrastructure forms the foundation of the intelligent airport. It provides an open platform for secure end-to-end services and supports applications for all. SITA has developed a network blueprint that offers the best balance of high availability, security, flexibility and interoperability. This helps drive airport transformation, improves services for all stakeholders, reduces operational costs and creates new revenue streams. We offer different engagement models to allow airports to match their specific business needs. They cover a range of requirements, from new-build terminals and technology refresh, to out-tasking, greater mobility and integrated systems: as part of a long-term partnership we provide managed services and outsourced telecommunications services. MEETING YOUR AIRPORT REQUIREMENTS Modern airports are complex businesses supporting many stakeholders including the airport authority, airlines, public services, ground handlers and tenants. All have different and often competing needs. The airport communications infrastructure is key to helping airports meet their goals. It provides airlines and other organizations at the airport with the mission-critical infrastructure underpinning all airport systems and services. It supports a smooth and hassle-free passenger journey and allows you to anticipate and deal with events and disruptions. To succeed, airports must be able to: Offer high-availability services, including missioncritical infrastructure and systems. Ensure a safe and secure space, while allowing passengers and operators to move freely around the airport. Optimize collaboration between the many stakeholders to improve airport efficiency and reduce costs. Increase non-aeronautical revenue to boost profitability. 3
STRATEGY FOR AN INTELLIGENT AIRPORT To unleash the potential of airports, SITA s vision is to deliver intelligent solutions through its three layer strategy consisting of: Optimal infrastructure that you can count on. Operational efficiency to improve passenger experience and optimize operations, while reducing costs. Business intelligence solutions to make better decisions with the right information at the right time. The communications infrastructure is at the core of our Intelligent Airport Strategy supporting mobility, self service, real time information sharing and collaborative technologies. MAKING INTELLIGENT COMMUNICATIONS@ AIRPORTS A communications infrastructure must provide a highly-available serviceoriented architecture that supports the day-to-day operations of all businesses at the airport site. Our intelligent communications solutions provide airports with an optimal shared infrastructure that airports can count on: being able to quickly and flexibly provision reliable, controlled and secured services: From anywhere at the airport, to any user at the airport (passenger, airline, tenants and aircraft), to anywhere in the world. Wired or wireless, on any device type (laptop, PDA and phone). Multi purpose services supporting: data, voice, video, mobile and applications. Today and into the future 4

OUR ARCHITECTURE FRAMEWORK IN DETAIL The following technology components make up the SITA communications architecture framework for airports. Physical and cabling A flexible multipurpose shared cabling backbone and telecommunications infrastructure that meets airport capacity, performance, resilience and security requirements. Campus LAN A multi-layered services and feature-rich architecture catering for data, voice, video and device mobility. It is fully virtualized to support stakeholders requirements with intelligent network features integrated into the design. Telephony Telephony services span the whole airport campus and are required for general, high availability and business critical emergency services. Our Airport Architectural framework supports traditional PABX systems, IP telephony (IPT) and hybrid solutions. Wireless LAN Passengers and staff want access to applications from anywhere and from any device. The wireless LAN needs to support business-critical applications, including baggage reconciliation systems, passenger checkin, interactive multimedia and VoIP. Mobility Mobile solutions have improved the ATI s productivity, optimized operations, enhanced customer relationships and streamlined management decision making. Data Center A proven layered approach refined over several years in our data center implementations in around the world (namely Atlanta, London, Singapore and Dusseldorf). WAN/Internet Our Airport Hub provides a fully optimized, secure and resiliant-services WAN platform. The result? A more efficient networking environment, with reduced lead-time to connect and lower TCO for telecommunications at the airport. QoS and Optimization Quality of Service (QoS) within the campus LAN ensures that unexpected bursts of traffic do not cause network congestion for mission-critical applications. In addition, our architecture blueprint provides IP Multicast technology that reduces traffic and server loads by delivering a single stream of data to multiple devices. Security The SITA Architectural framework takes a defensein-depth approach, where multiple layers of protection are strategically located throughout the network. This includes comprehensive functional, logical and physical security. Network management A structured approach to network management using industry best practices for fault, configuration, accounting, performance and security management. 7

IN ACTION AROUND THE WORLD ONE OF THE KEY PRINCIPLES IN OUR IT&T STRATEGY FOR TERMINAL 2 WAS TO ENSURE THAT THE FACILITY WAS FULLY INTEGRATED INTO THE CAMPUS AND TERMINAL 1. ANDREW MURPHY, HEAD OF IT&T, DUBLIN AIRPORT AUTHORITY SITA offers a long track record of telecom leadership in the airport environment. This includes: 125 customers using 110 AirportHubs worldwide. 2,000 AirportConnect Net CUTE (MDNS) connections at more than 150 airport locations globally. A presence in more than 200 airport CUTE sites worldwide, with 30,000 workstations, 3,300 checkins and 594 CUSS kiosks. HEATHROW AIRPORT HOLDINGS LIMITED Focuses on core business with outsourced IT and network services Heathrow Airport Holdings Limited manages London Heathrow, the world s fourth largest airport and five other UK airports. It wanted to use outsourcing to focus on its core business and deliver new solutions to airlines, retailers and other stakeholders. To this end, Heathrow Airport Holdings Limited outsourced to SITA the provision of LAN, WLAN, voice and radio services across all of its six airports. This was through a consortium led by Capgemini. We also provide ITIL-based service management, contract management, transformation and revenue generation services. DUBLIN AIRPORT increases capacity and customer service with new infrastructure Dublin Airport Authority needed to transform its IT infrastructure to manage capacity growth and operate highest levels of service in its new terminal. This included integrating and implementing of all the airport complex systems. We acted as Dublin s single provider and partnered with leading technology suppliers to build IT and telecommunications systems for its new terminals. The network services we supplied include telecommunications, security, passenger processing and information solutions and the Operations Control Center. 10
DUSSELDORF AIRPORT Maximizes efficiency with common outsourced infrastructure Dusseldorf Airport needed a fully-integrated IT system to maximize efficiency and improve passenger service in the airport.
