2 Conference Sponsor Making Good Use of the Emulate 3D Framework Improving Productivity with Automated Model Building Ian McGregor Co-founder/Director Emulate3D models are constructed from catalog items which can be as simple (imported CAD) or as complex (a fully functional system) as the user requires. Whether they are used "as is" or have been created specifically for the user, catalog items are open and their operational logic can be accessed and modified at build time. This flexibility was designed to accommodate and facilitate the next step in improving the workflow of simulation practitioners - automating the model build process. This presentation describes the conditions under which automatic model building is advantageous and cost-effective, the steps to implementation, as well as the benefits of the approach. The Hytrol Importer is presented as an illustration of the success of this approach. Ian McGregor is a co-founder of Emulate3D and has been one of the three Director-owners since the company's creation in Emulate3D develops a range of engineering software designed to assist with off-line virtual commissioning (Emulate3D Controls Testing), data-driven throughput simulation and analysis (Sim3D), and demonstration, prototyping and layout software, (Demo3D and Layout3D). In 2014 Emulate3D was awarded a Queen's Award for Enterprise in the Innovation category, for which Ian was presented to Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth II. Prior to creating Emulate3D Ian worked extensively with various simulation products worldwide; living and working as an engineer in the US for four years, Japan for one year, Singapore for eighteen months, and France for ten years. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical, Aeronautical, and Production Engineering, a Diplome d'ingenieur in Applied Computing, a Master of Science degree in Computer Integrated Manufacturing, and is a Chartered Member of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers. (Manufacturing Process Strategy) Advanced Components and Systems Division Caterpillar, Inc. Caterpillar has entered the Electric Drive market segment and embarked on a journey to develop a new electric propulsion system for a construction machine currently in production. Electric drive technology enables tremendous value for our customers through increased power, improved fuel efficiency, and lower long term operating costs. The challenge with this project was the 100% new content and unique manufacturing processes that did not exist within Caterpillar. Along with the new content, the time to market was extremely critical so reducing process validation time was imperative. Our team composed of Operations, Product Engineers, Manufacturing and Industrial Engineers, Supply Chain Engineers, and Environmental Health and Safety Professionals leveraged virtual tools to increase and maintain collaboration throughout the project. Team members from various locations around the globe conducted analysis using process simulation tools, 3D factory design, and our virtual cave facilities to conduct design reviews and virtual facility tours. Utilizing this process, our team mitigated 50 potential Safety / Ergonomic issues, improved designed throughput by 25%, reduced manpower requirements by 25%, and met our launch date. Virtual tools have proven to be extremely valuable to Caterpillar and our manufacturing teams have standardized the use of these tools across the globe. Brad George is currently the manager of Industrial Engineering, Simulation, Manufacturing Process Strategy, Manufacturing Technical Stewards, Manufacturing Engineering Process Owner, Environmental Health and Safety, and Manufacturing Built in Quality champion in the Advanced Components and Systems Division supporting 16 facilities globally. He joined Caterpillar in 2006 as a New Product Introduction Specialist launching new product around the globe and also held various other positions including 6 Sigma Black Belt, Manufacturing Engineering Manager, and Global Transformation Manager leading facility efficiency improvements. 4 Traffic Simulation 101 John Abraham, PhD, PE, PTOE Director of Traffic & Operations Macomb County Department of Roads Traffic Engineers have utilized traffic simulation tools to model performance of roadway facilities for planning, operations and evaluation of traffic operations. These models can be used to analyze existing performance, based on known traffic pattern data, that might otherwise be impossible to estimate via conventional data collection methods or standard traffic engineering analytical methods. Besides, simulation offers a much safer environment for both traffic engineers and the motoring public in testing and evaluating scenarios with parameters such as traffic signal timing. Simulation models can also be used to predict future estimated performance on the basis of forecasted changes in vehicle demand or travel patterns, proposed changes in roadway characteristics such as roadway expansion or redesign, or potential operational strategies. In addition to providing important engineering and planning capabilities that supplement empirical data and analytical techniques, traffic simulation models also go beyond aggregate estimates of performance based on average or median conditions by providing dynamic (time-varying) performance estimates as well. These models can also generate animated three-dimensional representations of roadway conditions that help convey the nature of traffic performance to the engineer as well as to decision makers and the general public. Animated displays also provide useful diagnostic cues during the model development phase, which in turn enhances user confidence in the validity of the resulting model s outputs. This presentation will introduce the audience to simulation as applied to traffic engineering. There are two major types of traffic simulation models: Macroscopic traffic flow simulation: Flow-density relationship is used to govern vehicle movement. Individual vehicles are not tracked in the model. Microscopic traffic simulation: Each individual vehicle is tracked. A vehicles movement in the system is determined by the characteristics of the driver, vehicle performance, and its interactions with network geometrics and surrounding vehicles. The presentation will delve more into Microscopic simulation models and demonstrate a couple of software that are popularly used in traffic engineering practice.. John Abraham is the Director of Traffic and Operations for Macomb County, Michigan. Dr. Abraham has authored around 10 papers in refereed journals and other publications, and has presented on these topics all over the world. Dr. Abraham is a Registered Professional Engineer, with the State of Michigan, and is a member of several professional organizations related to the traffic and transportation industries. In planning, optimizing design of the supply chain network for future products and services against forecasted demand is a standard practice. However, after the launch, as demand mix and requirements vary, it often becomes critical to refine the plan by running rapid simulations of evolving scenarios taking resource availability into account. We will talk about a high level architecture for managing such scenario analysis using simulation across multiple instances in order to optimize end result. Additionally we will highlight key features of this architecture using a case study. Jeffrey D. Tew is the Chief Scientist for the TCS Innovation Lab in Cincinnati, OH whose focus is leading and developing TCS s Supply Chain Research and Innovation activities globally. Dr. Tew is an internationally known professional consultant and expert in Transportation and Supply Chain Management (SCM), along with other related business disciplines. Dr. Tew has a long history of effective interactions with several of the leading research universities in the world. Dr. Tew also has maintained a strong publication record throughout his career, including filing six U.S. Patents awarded to date, over 80 internal GM R&D publications and report and over 35 external, archival publications in leading professional journals. Dr. Tew was awarded his B.S, Mathematics in 1979, his M.S., Applied Statistics in 1981, and his Ph.D., in 1986, all from Purdue University. Devadatta M. Kulkarni is a Principal Scientist for the TCS Innovation Lab in Cincinnati, OH and working on TCS s Supply Chain Management and Manufacturing research projects globally. Dr. Kulkarni is a well-known professional consultant and expert in Commodity Sourcing and Supply Chain Management (SCM) technologies, along with decision models related to Product Development and Total Cost management areas. Dr. Kulkarni has worked on both innovation and finance sides of a major automotive OEM business and brings in unique experience of architecting technology frameworks for enterprise transformation. Dr. Kulkarni has successfully extended his accomplished academic career into industrial researcher role with sustained publications, including filing 4 U.S. Patents, over 50 internal GM R&D publications and over 25 external, archival publications in leading professional journals.
