1 Approved Natural Disaster Recovery Round Green Army projects Project Title Project Description State Territory Belmont Wetlands East Coast This project will reduce erosion and revegetate and control weeds alongside the Storms Restoration Project Fernleigh Bicycle Track. These activities will repair damage to an iconic sand dune from a recent storm event, preventing erosion into a surrounding wetland. The project will also repair numerous unsealed roads and walking tracks and clear large amounts of green waste and fallen trees and shrubs affecting public access. Stage 2 will also spray herbicide on areas of Bitou Bitou bush in preparation for a community group to replace with native vegetation. This project will restore habitat and control erosion by replanting native species which were lost in the April 2015 storm event. It will also protect the integrity of the creek bank with new strategic fencing to control stock and people movements. Weed removal of invasive species will restore and connect habitat for native species located in the area and will decrease fragmentation. The project will also construct walking tracks to direct and control pedestrian activity which will afford the native plants protection from public access. Building on the outcomes of the first project (Restoration of Critical Habitat Post April Storm Event Stage #1), this project will undertake follow up maintenance on the restored habitat from the first project team, provide additional strategic plantings, erosion control and new strategic fencing to control stock and people movements. The project will also continue the removal of invasive species and will assist with the restoration and connectivity of habitat for native species located in the area and decrease fragmentation. The team will assist with clearing sites by cross-cutting fallen trees that are blocking pathways to enable visitor access on tracks through bushland sites and will undertake revegetation and erosion control activities to build resilience to future storm events. This project will restore habitat and biodiversity along the Paterson and Allyn Rivers with a focus on the Torryburn area (Gresford) and also the Kooragang Ramsar site. Proposed activities include clearing flood debris from sensitive riparian zones, clearing invasive weeds from flood affected river banks, preventing further erosion by replanting native species and installing strategic fencing to control stock to ensure long term protection of river banks. These activities will assist to restore habitat connectivity for native species located in the area and decrease the effects of fragmentation. The project will build on and maintain the outcomes achieved for the Torryburn Community in Gresford and also on the Kooragang Ramsar site by the first Green Army team (Lower Hunter Flood Disaster Recovery Project 1). This project will clear flood debris from sensitive riparian zones, remove invasive weeds from flood affected eroded banks, replant native riparian species lost in the April storm event and protect the integrity of the creek bank with new strategic fencing to control stock. 5 Hunter Wetland Storm Recovery and Erosion Control Stage 1 Hunter Wetland Storm Recovery and Erosion Control Stage 2 This project will restore the Wetlands Centre to pre-storm condition. Project activities include the removal of fallen trees, restoration of paths, revegetation and regeneration of storm damaged areas, repairing and revegetation of storm water drains, repairing and auditing predator-proof fencing and repairing storm-damaged boardwalks. This project will build on the activities conducted in Hunter Wetland Storm Recovery and Erosion Control - Stage 1. In addition to maintenance activities, project activities include installing erosion control measures and continuing erosion control revegetation (including through log positioning), improving footpaths and fence footings to build resilience to storms, continuing weed control along fence lines, removal of fallen trees from near paths, revegetation and regeneration of areas damaged by the storm, repairing damaged stormwater drains and fixing a 2m long walking bridge that was destroyed. 6 Riparian Restoration to Protect Natural Resources and the Lower Great Barrier Reef Riparian Restoration from Mundubbera Gayndah to Assist the Great Barrier Reef Bundaberg Disaster Recovery #1 - Revegetation, Debris Removal, Weed Control Gladstone Region Disaster Recovery #1 - Revegetation, Debris Removal, Weed Control This project will repair the flood damage along Splinter, Monal Creek, Three Moon Creek and the Burnett River in the north region of the North Burnett Regional area. Activities will include the removal of debris from the flooded areas to prevent further infrastructure damage downstream, weed control in the floodplain area and strategic planting to reduce the potential for further erosion. The project will establish buffers along riparian areas through revegetation, restoring the appropriate native species to reduce the risk of future bank erosion. This project will repair the flood damage along the Burnett River in the area between Mundubbera and Gayndah in southern region of the North Burnett Regional area. Activities will include the removal of debris from the flooded areas to prevent further infrastructure damage downstream, weed control in the floodplain area and strategic planting to reduce the potential for further erosion. The project will establish buffers along riparian areas through re-vegetation, restoring the appropriate native species to reduce the risk of future bank erosion. This project will regenerate aquatic ecosystems, including wetlands and sensitive coastal catchment environments between Baffle Creek and Burrum River. Activities will include the restoration of disaster impacted aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, especially riparian zones and adjacent groundwater-dependent ecosystems of the Granite Creek sub-catchment, and coastal vegetation communities which are important nesting habitats for marine turtles. Activities will also include regeneration of impacted groundwater dependent ecosystems using traditional fire management techniques and plantings and monitoring turtle nesting and predation by foxes and pigs at Burrum Coast National Park. This project will monitor and improve the aquatic ecosystems, including wetlands and sensitive coastal environments of the Boyne River including Gladstone Port, its islands, and the Southern Barrier Reef. Activities will include remediation of areas of specific marine and terrestrial ecosystems impacted by disaster, and assessing and monitoring the culturally significant areas adjacent to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, including locating and surveying shell middens and burial sites. This project will reduce sediment load and debris into the Great Sandy Strait through riparian rehabilitation, debris clean up and re-vegetation of the embankments of Deep Creek, an important tributary of the Mary River. Work will be undertaken on both sides of Deep Creek along a 1.6km section, just prior to where it joins the Mary River at Gympie. Hepburn Shire Natural Disaster Yarra Ranges This project will focus on the northern section of Yarra Ranges which was significantly damaged by the storms in February The project will stabilise riverbanks, restore native habitat including replanting an endangered flora species, Eucalyptus crenulata (Buxton Gum), and revegetate degraded areas. This will build resilience for future storm events, promote habitat for significant fauna and flora species and ensure water quality in the critical upper catchment flowing into urban Melbourne.
