2 Your FUTURE at UHD is committed to student success Drawing scholars from all fields, UHD s professors are known for their commitment to student success. With a student-tofaculty ratio of just 22:1, professors serve as mentors, and will help you shape your career goals, find the right degree program and build industry connections. 65 percent of UHD undergraduates are given the opportunity to participate in faculty research an advantage unheard of among public state universities. You can be part of a thriving university located in the heart of downtown Houston. UHD is a comprehensive, four-year university that offers an urban appeal to a diverse student body. No other university in the region reflects the dynamic and unique diversity of Houston better than UHD. If you are a student fresh out of high school, an adult returning to college to complete your degree, a professional seeking a career change, or a student transferring to find the right university that offers a personalized and robust educational experience, UHD is right for you. AN INCREDIBLE VALUE Faculty connections You will benefit from the small class sizes, where classroom interactions are lively and engaging. And your benefits extend beyond the classroom many students have found professional connections and career opportunities after graduation through faculty relationships in the industries they represent. With the lowest tuition of any four-year institution in Houston, you will appreciate a quality education at an affordable rate. With private school benefits at a public institution rate, high-quality education becomes attainable. Our alumni appreciate the value of their degree, with less student debt while offering exciting career opportunities and marketable skills. UHD alumni compete well and often exceed peers from other institutions in the job market. Recent research indicates that UHD graduates are the third highest salary earners of any four-year public university in Texas. Cecile J. Social Work UHD students come from 28 states and63 countries 1 2
3 A STRONG Academic Experience Learning extends beyond the classroom You will find dozens of options for engaging with the community, participating in faculty research on campus in labs or out in the field, and study abroad programs. UHD faculty and staff continually build contacts with corporations located throughout Houston, partnering with companies to provide meaningful internships for you to build industry experience. Whatever your interests, UHD faculty appreciate the importance of experiential learning, offering students high-impact educational experiences that enrich and enhance understanding and knowledge. Scholars Academy The UHD Scholars Academy promotes academic success for students in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. Each year, 160 students are supported through scholarships, mentoring and education-enhancing experiences. UHD has a commitment to increase the number of underrepresented students graduating with STEM degrees and increase the advancement and preparation into graduate or professional degrees in the STEM workforce. Scholars Academy has been a resounding success, with over 500 alumni from the Academy pursuing advanced degrees, and more than 91 percent remaining in STEM industries after graduation. Scholars Academy has awarded over 3,300 scholars approximately $6,000,000 in scholarships. Honors Program The University Honors Program offers high achieving students an enriched academic and co-curricular experience in a supportive environment. From the summer of their first year to graduation, students are immersed in a culture designed to transform academic potential into achievement. Honors students belong to a vibrant community of scholars with a shared passion for learning, exploring and creating. Honors students benefit from personalized advising, mentoring, an innovative curriculum taught by outstanding faculty, small classes, access to study abroad opportunities and Honors only special events and study spaces. The Honors Program is inclusive of all majors and students are connected with faculty from their disciplines within their first semester of study. Core level Honors courses help prepare students to work one-on-one with faculty in student-driven Honors projects and research within their majors. Each student s Honors Experience reflects individual abilities, interests and future goals. Admission to the Honors Program is competitive with scholarships available for highly qualified applicants. 3 5 SKILLS UHD INSTILLS IN STUDENTS 1. Social Justice 2. Critical Thinking 3. Team Building 4. Communication 5.
