1 TO: Applicant for HBS Alumni Club of San Diego Fellowship for Nonprofit Leadership FROM: Kate Williams VP Social Enterprise HBS Alumni Club of San Diego RE: Application Process The Harvard Business School Alumni Club of San Diego is pleased to offer a fully paid scholarship to attend the oneweek Executive Education Program at Harvard Business School entitled Strategic Perspectives in Nonprofit Management (SPNM). The course will be held July 13-19, at the Harvard Business School in Boston. applicant selection criteria, together with the application timeline, are listed below. Further information on the Fellowship may be found at The HBS SPNM course for nonprofit leaders integrates interactive classroom sessions with structured and informal small-group sessions, addressing three key objectives: 1) understanding core management concepts; 2) applying these concepts strategically; and 3) learning how to implement change within the organization. The Club identified this course as one that could address a growing need for strategic business training for the management of nonprofits. Past participants have called the program a professionally transformative experience and said it provides an energizing whole new perspective to running an organization. Additional information about the SPNM program can be found at Criteria for candidate selection include: 1. The applicant must work for a nonprofit organization that serves the community-at-large. Preference will be given to organizations that provide direct services (in contrast to advocacy only organizations). HBS will not consider applications from management support organizations or consulting firms. In a limited number of cases, applicants who represent industry or trade associations may be considered. 2. The applicant should be a Chief Executive Officer, President, or Executive Director who is responsible for shaping the direction, mission, policies and major programs of their organizations. All candidates should have at least one year of experience as head of their organization. 3. The organization must have a demonstrated and broad impact on the community, an experienced management team, a need to improve its skills and opportunities, and the commitment to take advantage of the experience received at Harvard. 4. The individual must have a desire to improve his/her personal skills and performance, be capable of performing well in a rigorous classroom environment, and meet the criteria for acceptance by Harvard Business School s Executive Education Program. 5. Awards will be made to executives representing organizations of a range of sizes, typically with a minimum of several full-time employees and an annual operating budget of at least $500,000. The organization must have been fully operational (with full-time staff) for at least one year and also have primary operations in the greater San Diego area. Finalists will be notified of their selection in mid-april and will then be invited to attend an in-person interview. Fellowship recipients(s) will be notified in early May. 10 CANCELLATION POLICY The HBS/SD Alumni Club will provide direct payment of tuition, room, board, and books to HBS for the recipient(s) of the HBS/SD Alumni Club Fellowship for Nonprofit Leadership. The recipient s nonprofit organization will be reimbursed for corresponding travel costs of up to $600. Please certify that if you are chosen as a scholarship recipient, you will make your best effort to attend the program from July 13-19, at the Harvard Business School campus in Boston, MA. Should you receive the scholarship and become unable to attend, please notify us as soon as possible so that we may send an alternate in your place. Due to program demand and the volume of preprogram preparation, a cancellation fee is charged to the Club if a reserved spot in the course is cancelled within 30 days of the start of the program.
