Erica s Story After several years of college, Erica was ready to settle down and begin a new life for herself. She had studied hard and received an Associate s Degree at Delta College, a Bachelor s degree at Michigan State, a Master s degree in Social work at University of Michigan and a Law degree at Cooley Law School in Lansing, Michigan. You would think that she had it all. Growing up was hard for the young wife and mother who had been given up to the foster care system. Erica admits, I didn t know the true love of a mother and father. In seeking companionship, Erica re-kindled an old relationship that lead to marriage. However, it became a broken marriage that ended in I didn t know the true love of a mother and father. divorce due to her husband s gambling addiction. Eventually becoming homeless, Erica was forced to find shelter at City Rescue Mission. It was different being on the other end, states Erica. The young mother and Social Worker herself could not believe she needed the very services she had referred so many to. Now, employed and living in permanent housing, Erica credits her faith in God and the Emergency Shelter staff for helping her through her difficult time.

Where Hope Begins

Making a Difference in Saginaw Fast Facts: Last year, your generous partnership meant 1,083 homeless men, women and children received emergency shelter services Over 30,000 nights of emergency shelter provided Our average daily occupancy was 83 Over 85,000 meals served

Providing Emergency Shelter Most often the need for emergency shelter is what brings someone through our doors. When a guest enters the shelter, we try to project warmth, discipline, and compassion. Counselors meet with each guest to identify services needed. The goal is to fully address the needs faced by the homeless individual or family, to assist them with the immediate need for shelter, and to provide the tools that will lead them to become a productive member of our community. For those with limited skills or experience, opportunities for jobs that pay a living wage are very limited. Additionally, many members of the homeless population have to combat barriers such as limited transportation and reduced access to education and training. To address the need for skill based training, life skills classes develop basic employment and household management skills. Course topics include time management, finance basics, communication skills, home economics, Excel application and job readiness.

Sharing the Gospel Sharing the Good News of the Gospel has been the lifeblood of the Rescue Mission for over 100 years. Messages of hope and security are shared by local pastors, church leaders, and mission staff members every day during morning devotions and evening chapel services. This aspect of the ministry is vital. The true message of rescue is presented to those in need of an eternal change in life direction. Fast Facts: Last year you helped demonstrate the love of Christ. More than 1,000 chapel services brought our guests closer to God with a total attendance of 20, spiritual decisions were made!

Life Skills Classes City Rescue Mission collaborated with Accenture employees to develop Life Skills classes with the goal of increasing basic employment and household management skills. Classes include: Household Management, Finance Basics, Communication, Time Management, Microsoft Excel and Employment Readiness.

Jesse s Story Jesse was homeless and living in the woods for two years before he found Good Samaritan Rescue Mission. Coming from Florida, he moved to Michigan with his sister, mother and nephew. While the family was still moving from place to place, Jesse began sleeping in the He felt he had nowhere to go; hopeless and feeling like no one cared. woods. He felt he had nowhere to go; hopeless and feeling like no one cared. Winter hit and he lived in half a tent and a sleeping bag. He didn t think anyone knew where he was or that anyone cared. I wound up in the hospital and from there, since I had no place to go, I was sent to Good Samaritan Rescue Mission (GSRM). Finally at GSRM, he found people who actually cared about him. After one week, Mercer asked Jesus into his heart. He stopped drinking and using drugs, found a church that he loves and now looks forward to going to every week.

Community Village Story Community Village became part of the Rescue Ministries family back in The Village was initially constructed as a County Infirmary in 1976, however by 1992 Saginaw County felt that divestiture was their best approach to solving operational losses. The Rescue Mission Board was then chaired by Ken Hasse, when he and Ken Streeter recognized the value that Community Village offered the frail elderly of Saginaw County. Today, Community Village operates as part of the R3M family. In fact, the integration of the Village has never been greater. Some of the older Rescue Mission and Good Samaritan guests find that Community Village provides the safest, quietest, and most supportive permanent housing they have ever known. Other Mission clients find that Community Village offers them an opportunity to be part of the staff as they assist in landscaping, housekeeping, and meal preparation. Still other Mission guests find themselves in need of the full range of assisted living services the Village is licensed to provide. Margaret Brown is a former Mission guest who initially benefitted from shelter, evangelism, and security at the Saginaw Rescue Mission. She then realized that Community Village could provide her with a long term solution for permanent supportive housing. More recently Margaret has discovered that the Village has been an enormous help in overcoming her battle with cancer. Naturally, the nursing staff oversee her daily care between chemotherapy treatments, but she also finds that even the dietary staff lend support with lunches that carry notes of encouragement when she has to go for out-patient treatments. Margaret reflects on her move to the Village and states; this is the best move I have ever made. Community Village is often the forgotten member of the Rescue Ministries of Mid-Michigan family, but the staff stands ready to serve frail elders whether or not they have Mission experience.

Where Hope Begins

Making A Difference at Community Village Community Village is a licensed Home for the Aged, which provides assisted living for seniors. The Rescue Mission subsidizes many village residents because their social security benefits do not cover the cost of their care. The Village offers a variety of services and appealing activities for residents. We focus on health with an excellent assortment of menu choices, a senior exercise program, and even a hydro-therapeutic spa for ultimate relaxation. Outings are planned and craft classes are held. Community Village offers an Accelerated Care Unit. The Accelerated Care Unit program features activities designed especially for those seniors with added challenges. The daily activities vary, ranging from mild exercises to interactive routines like reminiscence therapy. These activities bolster the senses and help preserve daily vitality.

Adult Day Care Fast Facts: Staff specifically selected and trained for dementia care Planned, supervised and appropriate exercises and activities Nursing staff trained to administer medicines and chart daily care Nursing staff trained to identify abnormal behaviors or symptoms and prepared to respond to emergency situations Delicious meals served to those participating at meal times Additional benefits for the dementia sufferer are a reduction of depression, better appetite and more interest in their personal appearance. The Village is recognized as the premier Adult Day Care Service provider in the Saginaw area. Adult day care is an option for area seniors who might otherwise face isolation while care-giving loved ones work outside the home. Adult Day Services not only provide therapy, but also opportunities for bathing and a full range of salon services. Family Respite Care Community Village s Adult Day Care is available to assist caregivers with a respite from the arduous daily responsibilities of caring for a loved one or spouse. The caregiver has relief from his or her intense responsibilities, time for shopping or socializing with friends or family members, and much needed rest. Service Availability Adult Day Care and Respite Services are available 365 days a year from 8:00 a.m. to 4 p.m. The minimum daily time of care is 3 hours. There are hourly, daily, and weekly rates. For more information on current rates for Day Care and a listing of additional services and their fees, please contact the Community Village office at (989) Admission Adult Day Care and Respite participants need to complete the full admission procedure and be accepted before services can begin. After acceptance, prescheduling is appreciated, but not always necessary. You and your loved one are invited to schedule a free and no-obligation tour of Community Village s Adult Day Care Center. Please call the Community Village office at (989) to schedule your tour.

Rachel s Story In 2007 Rachel was 18 years old, living in her car, and pregnant when she found herself at the doors of Good Samaritan Rescue Mission. Three months later she had a job and a place to live. Today Rachel finds herself with a beautiful 7-year old boy, a fiancé, attending school and working. Growing up in a middle-income family, Rachel had never experienced homelessness. Finding herself in new territory, it was suggested to her to check out GSRM. That was the most humbling experience of my life. It changed me, confesses Rachel. She was able to secure a job and a place to live in only 3 months. Money being very tight, she was still able to get That was the most humbling experience of my life. It changed me. help from the Mission with the bi-weekly food baskets. The Mission has saved so many lives. I still keep in touch with some friends I made there. I was safe and I had food.

Samaritan Award Jesus was one day confronted by a lawyer and questioned about what a person must do to receive life in Heaven. It was determined that one should love the Lord with all their heart, soul, strength and mind, and love their neighbor as much as they loved themselves. However, as lawyers are prone to look for loopholes, this man questioned Jesus as to just who his neighbor might be. Jesus, being the master of parables, took the time to tell about a man traveling from Jerusalem to Jericho who fell among thieves. He was beaten, robbed, and left to die on the side of the road. Soon a Jewish priest came along, noted the man s plight, but decided to continue on his way without offering assistance. Next a Levite, also known as a Godly man, passed by the robbery victim and he also decided the man s plight was none of his business. However, a man from Samaria (a very undesirable place to Jews) came upon the poor soul and took the time to treat his wounds and minister care to one who would not normally care for him. After sharing this story, Jesus allowed the lawyer to decide which man demonstrated the quality of loving his neighbor. Annually the Rescue Mission leadership considers all of the volunteer efforts that have been observed. The Mission, being a volunteer driven organization, literally has hundreds of potential Samaritans demonstrating love to their neighbors every year. Some share clothing, some dress wounds, some offer transportation, some give money to pay for lodging others, but all are interested in assisting the beaten and down-trodden. The Samaritan Award is presented to one whose charitable acts have somehow stood out among the hundreds of kindnesses. Just as in Jesus day, the outstanding Samaritan is not easily noted because many times they are discovered among the most unsuspecting candidates. The universal characteristic among all Samaritan Award recipients is that they would all be someone that you would appreciate as a neighbor. Very likely you would even forego building a fence between their house and yours Ken & Karen Streeter 2003 Robert Forbes 2005 Rev.
