The program prepares men and women to practice as registered nurses after successfully passing the NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination). Core components and competencies for graduates are adopted from the National League for Nursing (2000), Educational Competencies for Graduate of Associate Degree Nursing Programs. The core components are: professional behaviors, communication, assessment, clinical decision making, caring interventions, teaching and learning, collaboration, and managing care. Clinical facilities associated with the nursing program include D. W. McMillan Hospital and Westgate Village in Brewton; Atmore Community Hospital and Atmore Nursing Home in Atmore; Baptist Hospital, Sacred Heart Hospital, and West Florida Hospital in Pensacola, Florida; West Florida Community Care in Milton, Florida; Jay Hospital, Jay, Florida, Andalusia Hospital in Andalusia; Thomas Hospital in Fairhope; North Baldwin Hospital in Bay Minette; and Evergreen Medical Center in Evergreen. Additional clinical facilities related to community health are utilized. Accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission and with full approval of the Alabama Board of Nursing, the Nursing Program is designed to offer educational opportunities to qualified applicants who desire to become registered nurses prepared to practice in both acute and long-term care settings where policies and procedures are specified. Upon satisfactory completion of the requirements of the nursing program, the graduate will be eligible to apply for the National Council Licensure Examination and apply to a State Board of Nursing for licensure as a registered nurse. Legal requirements for licensure in Alabama may be found in the Code of Alabama, 1975, as amended, Sec , 34-21, 25. Applicants who have been found guilty of any offenses listed in the Code may be denied licensure by the Alabama Board of Nursing, State of Alabama, P. O. Box , Mont-gomery, Alabama The nursing student shall comply with legal, moral, and legislative standards, in accordance with the Alabama Law Regulating Practice of Registered and Practical Nursing as stated below:

4 The Board shall have the power to deny, revoke or suspend any license issued by it or to otherwise discipline a licensee upon proof that the licensee: is guilty of fraud or deceit in procuring or attempting to procure a license; has been convicted of a felony; is guilty of a crime involving moral turpitude or of gross immorality that would tend to bring reproach upon the nursing profession; is unfit or incompetent due to the use of alcohol, or is addicted to the use of habit-forming drugs to such an extent as to render him or her unsafe or unreliable as a licensee; has been convicted of any violation of a federal or state law relating to controlled substances; is mentally incompetent; is guilty of unprofessional conduct of a character likely to deceive, defraud or injure the public in matters pertaining to health or has willfully or repeatedly violated any of the provisions of this article as defined by board rules and regulations. ** **Alabama Law Regulating Practice of Registered and Practical Nursing, Page 14. ABN website: Failure to comply with any of the above stipulations while in the Nursing Program constitutes grounds for dismissal from the program. It is important for nursing students to know about the Alabama Board of Nursing s regulations on the review of candidates for eligibility for initial and continuing licensure. There will be questions on the Application for Licensure as a Registered Nurse by Examination which ask, Have you ever been arrested or convicted for driving under the influence of drugs/alcohol? Application for the examination may be denied on the basis of this review. Although these policies refer specifically to Alabama, other states have similar stipulations regarding licensure. The JDCC Nursing Program is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission. Information about this program may be obtained from: NLNAC, 61 Broadway, New York, New York The telephone number is Statements in this catalog are for informational purposes only. This catalog does not constitute an agreement between Jefferson Davis Community College Nursing Program and the student. The Nursing Program reserves the right to change the cost, curriculum, or any other items contained herein as changing circumstances may dictate. Students seeking admission to nursing must first apply to the College through the admissions office. Admission to the College does not necessarily guarantee admission to the nursing program for both the Basic and Career Mobility Track (LPN to RN). ADMISSION, PROGRESSION, AND RETENTION POLICIES In the interest of student and patient safety and before con-sideration for admission, any applicant possessing certain limitations may be required to submit medical examination records and/or statements from physicians indicating that he/she is able to fully participate in the approved program of clinical studies and responsibilities. Applicants must be physically and mentally cap-able of performing all nursing competencies. Students may register for general education courses while awaiting

5 admission to the nursing program. Students who wish to major in nursing should first complete the application and admission procedures required by the College. Secondly, the student should complete an application to the nursing program. Qualified applicants residing within the institution s service area are given first consideration for admission. (This includes students from Lurleen B. Wallace Community College and Faulkner State Community College.) Students who do not have beginning computer skills must correct this deficit. If a person has computer skills attained other than in a formal course of study, these skills must be documented upon admission to the nursing program (submit Evidence of Computer Skills form).

ADMISSION (Nursing) After careful review of all applications, recommendations for admission into the nursing program will be determined by a nursing admissions panel consisting of the College Coordinator of Admissions and Records, a nursing faculty member, and a faculty member appointed by the Dean of Instruction. For admission consideration, each student must have completed the following: 1. Application to college. 2. Application to nursing program. 3. Transcripts from all colleges attended, including technical colleges. 4. Diagnostic Entrance Test for Nursing (DET): A composite of 55% or above and a mathematics score of 55% or above is required for admission consideration. Students are encouraged to retake the DET in order to achieve higher scores since students are accepted according to the rank order of the DET composite score. Students who reside in the identified service areas will be given first consideration for admission. (This includes Lurleen B. Wallace Community College and Faulkner State Community College.) In the event of a tie, a GPA

10 based upon BIO 201, PSY 200, and MTH 100 will determine admission for the basic student. DET test scores are valid for 3 years. For admission consideration, a student may take the DET examination no more than three times in an effort to attain acceptable scores. Students should wait 3 months between testings. During this time, the student should enroll in general education courses that will increase knowledge in the subject areas of the test with scores below 55. Each examination costs approximately $18. An appointment to take the DET must be made well in advance of each testing date by contacting and registering with the business office. The DET is administered by the Testing Center. Students may contact the Nursing Department for testing dates. 5. Submitted documentation of beginning computer skills. 6. Along with the notification of acceptance, students will receive information in reference to registration, CPR certification, physical examination, mandatory liability insurance, and mandatory pre-clinical drug and alcohol screening. The following admission policies and requirements must be met prior to the beginning of the first clinical nursing course: a. Specific, current, satisfactory, physical examination form completed by a licensed physician or certified nurse practitioner that indicates that the student has satisfactory physical and mental health and is free of any infectious diseases. (This form is furnished by the Nursing Depart-ment.) The two-step TB skin test or a chest x-ray is required. The two-step TB skin test must be updated annually. Evidence of having Rubella (German measles) vaccination or an immune titer is an absolute requirement for the clinical agencies. OSHA requires that a student have the Hepatovac Series prior to entry into clinical nursing or sign an OSHA approved Hepatovac refusal form. There must be documented immunity to varicella (chicken pox) and Tetanus immunization within last 10 years. Some clinical agencies will not permit nursing students after the first trimester of pregnancy to be present on mental health or psychiatric units. Neither the College nor any member of the Nursing Department is responsible for any infectious disease including AIDS or teratogenic effects from any virus, medication, procedure, or injury that a student may contract while in the campus lab or clinical setting. b. All students participating in clinicals must sign a contract agreeing that (1) he/she is a student at JDCC, enrolled in a clinical course requiring the student s presence at a health care facility; (2) the student is not an employee of the institution or of the health care facility; (3) the student is not expecting and will not receive compensation for participation in the clinical course from either the institution or the health care facility; (4) the student has not been promised and is not expecting to be offered a job at the health care facility as a result of participation in the clinical course. Applicants must be physically and mentally capable of performing all competencies.

11 c. Copy of a current, up-to-date BCLS: CPR certification of infant/child/adult prior to NUR 110 or NUR 211. (This is 2-man CPR). This certification must remain current throughout the program. d. Evidence that he/she has achieved a minimum C grade in required nonnursing courses. e. Payment of liability insurance yearly (approximately $20.00 per year). Nursing applications are valid for one year only (for the year indicated on the nursing application form). Anyone wishing to re-apply to the nursing program will have to complete a new form in keeping with the application deadlines: June 15 - Fall Admission, October 15 - Spring Admission. All non-nursing courses must be completed with a minimum of a C grade. Basic students should complete all non-nursing courses with a lab component prior to beginning NUR 110. A career mobility (LPN-RN) student should complete all nonnursing courses with a lab component prior to beginning NUR 242 or a higher sequence. PROGRESSION AND RETENTION Special grading criteria are in effect for all required nursing courses. The grading criteria for all courses with the prefix NUR are as follows: A % B 84-92% C 75-83% D 66-74% F Below 66% All students must complete first level courses prior to beginning second level courses and second level courses prior to beginning third level courses. Each student must demonstrate satisfactory performance in the campus/clinical laboratory according to established criteria and achieve a minimum of a C in theory in order to complete each nursing course successfully. First level courses: NUR 110/131/211/241/251/293 Second level courses: NUR 242/252/271/272/280 Third level courses: NUR 253/291 Reasons for termination include, but are not limited to: 1. excessive absences; 2. unsatisfactory scholastic achievement, which includes theory and campus/clinical laboratory; 3. unsafe nursing practice including those related to being under the influence of alcohol/drugs; 4. unsatisfactory mental and/or physical health;

12 5. positive test results from mandatory drug and alcohol screening; 6. obstruction or disruption of the Nursing Program or operations; 7. breach of confidentiality; 8. failure to pay for liability insurance and level testing costs as scheduled; 9. failure to complete all required level tests as scheduled. Unprofessional conduct will warrant investigation according to the policies of the College included in the student handbook of the Jefferson Davis Community College Catalog. Nursing courses must be completed in a sequential pattern as outlined. Students not achieving a minimum of a C in nursing courses may not continue in the program in sequence. A student may be re-admitted to the nursing program one time only. A nursing course may be repeated only once. Any changes in the curriculum or procedures or policies will be applicable upon readmission. Students who withdraw from nursing or have their progress interrupted for one semester or more must reapply to the nursing program for readmission consideration. Withdrawal for any reason will be considered a failure. All students who readmit must retake NUR 241 and achieve a minimum of a C grade prior to continuing the nursing course progression. There must be a vacancy in the class and/or nursing course before consideration will be given to the request for readmission. TRANSFER STUDENTS Transfer students are considered for admission into the nursing program on an individual basis by the nursing admissions committee. For admission consideration, the transfer student should have been enrolled in a collegiate school of nursing (ADN, BSN), within the last 12 months, have maintained a 2.00 grade point average ( C ), have made at least a C grade in all required courses, and have met all other specific criteria as outlined in the nursing program s Admission and Progression Policies. There must be a vacancy for consideration. Clinical nursing courses taken at other institutions are evaluated by the nursing curriculum committee before credit and advanced standing are awarded to the student. Due to the uniqueness of each nursing program s curriculum, credit and advanced standing cannot be assured. No additional class or clinical sections will be opened for transfer students. A transfer student must document eligibility for readmission to the nursing program from which they are transferring. CAREER MOBILITY The Nursing faculty is committed to the life-long learner and highly value previous learning by the individual. Licensed practical nurses with Alabama licensure are eligible for the career mobility (LPN to RN) track. Information regarding the career mobility track and validation process is included in the Nursing Program Information/Application for the Career Mobility Student packet. ADMISSION

13 All rules, regulations, and policies, as previously stated, apply to the career mobility (LPN-RN) student. This includes, but is not limited to, completion of physical examination; CPR certification; C grade or above in non-nursing courses; expenses; grading criteria; progression and retention and readmission; and transfer. An Alabama LPN nursing license is required of all career mobility students enrolled in JDCC s Nursing Program. All non-nursing courses must be completed with a minimum of a C grade. The CM student should complete all non-nursing courses with a lab component prior to beginning NUR 242 or higher sequence. Career Mobility students will receive letters of acceptance after careful review of the nursing admissions panel which consists of the College Coordinator of Admissions and Records, a nursing faculty member, and a faculty member appointed by the Dean of Instruction. Students will receive letters of acceptance based upon: 1. Application to the College. 2. Application to the nursing program. 3. Transcript that documents graduation from LPN program. 4. Proof of Alabama LPN licensure. Students enrolled in the career mobility track are required to maintain a current Alabama license. 5. Achievement of 75% or higher on Validation Battery Exam #I.
