BREAK
Group exercise You have been split into four groups. Each group will look at a different case study. You are careers consultants, advising the case study of what they might do next think about how they can create their own job hunting strategy. You have 30 minutes to answer all of the questions and prepare a short presentation. At the end of the 30 minutes each group will present their proposed strategy to the wider group.
Case study 1 John is in his final year of a History BA and is in line to get a 2.1. He wants to pursue a career in advertising because he enjoys working with people and feels that he has good communication skills. John did a four week internship with Acme Advertising during the summer of his second year and enjoyed it, although he has not kept in contact with any of the people he worked with. He also writes for the student magazine and is on the team responsible for their social media marketing. John knows that advertising is a very difficult area to get in to and so is worried about how to get a job after graduation.
Case study 2 Ping is in her second year studying Engineering at UCL and is thinking about going in to consultancy. She does not have any work experience and is wondering if she should get a job or internship that will improve her skills. However she also needs to work during the holidays to get money for her final year. Ping is originally from China so will only have a few months after graduation to secure a job before her visa expires. Currently Ping is part of the Chinese Society and the Women in Management Society at UCL. She went to UCL Careers Consultancy Fair and met with a couple of employers who gave her lots of information about their companies.
Case study 3 Irrum is in her final year of an Economics BSc and is in line to get a First. She is extremely passionate about a career in international development, and is particularly keen to work for an NGO overseas. Irrum has sent out over 20 applications for internships and administrative roles with the major NGOs overseas, but has not received any invitations for interviews. She does not have any family or close contacts working in the sector and now feels at a complete loss on how to break into this highly competitive field. In terms of experience, Irrum has held a part-time waitressing job throughout her studies at UCL, spent the previous summer backpacking across Southeast Asia including 2 weeks in Vietnam on her own- and has completed 1 week of work shadowing in a city law firm. She is a part of the Model UN society at UCL and attended a Model UN conference in Egypt in her second year. She also received the Amnesty International newsletter and consistently signs up to all their major campaigns. Finally, last month she ran a 10km race on behalf of the NSPCC where she raised 3,500 for the charity.
Case study 4 George recently graduated from UCL with a 2.1 in Computer Science and is trying to find a job. After speaking to his friends from the course, he has decided to find a job in User Experience as this seems to be what most of them are going on to do. He has found some application forms but he doesn t feel motivated to fill them in and the deadlines are looming. George plays guitar in a band and spent a lot of time at university pursuing his love of music and earned money promoting local gigs. He is enjoyed selling tickets and promoting the events. George has had experience working in a bar and done some office administration in the holidays.
