2 Healthcare is on a journey, both nationally and locally. Like any journey, it requires thought and planning, a purpose and destination, acceptance of the detours and patience along the way. The journey for St. Joseph's Hospital is to assure that the people we serve and the patients we care for will always have access to quality healthcare - healthcare that is responsible and appropriate, cost effective and given with compassion, respect and a smile. Our journey includes our physicians and colleagues, our Sisters, Boards, Advisory Council, Partners, Friends, Volunteers and community at large, all traveling in the same direction towards a common goal of being the best we can be, which benefits everyone!

3 Brothers and Sisters from throughout the Chippewa Valley: St. Josephʼs Hospital has been on a journey for well over 120 years. (In fact, this coming year we will celebrate our 125th birthday). Throughout that time all who have been associated with us have been committed to giving testimony to our deep faith in Christ and His gospel values. All of us have tried together to foster a vision which reflects the spirit of His charity and incorporates the example of St. Francis. Each day we consciously focus on assuring that our work positively serves society. At the same time we perform our service with a high regard for one another. In todayʼs fast paced and at times unforgiving world, the roots of our Hospital Sisters run deep. They spread across continents and reach down to the bedrock of the Chippewa Valley. Those of us serving at St. Josephʼs Hospital are the beneficiaries of many known and unknown colleagues who have gone before us. Their humility and dedication have made our journey of service somewhat clearer. Their thoughtfulness challenges us to consider our life as a calling and to grow beyond self. This calling involves ordinary people doing extraordinary things. David B. Godʼs presence is evident through the many servant leaders at St. Josephʼs Hospital. Our Sisters remind us that as servant leaders it is our responsibility to treasure and transfer the charism of our ministry as it has been given to us by the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis. We need to first be a healing presence before we can transfer that power to others. It is with that spirit of caring and serving others that we share this yearʼs Community Benefit Report with you. 4 Dear Friends, Would you have thought that health care reform would ever be so popular? Health care reform addresses peopleʼs lives. It is a very important topic in our own homes, in politics and in the news. From the boardroom to the operating room and every living room in between, Americans are faced with rapidly rising health care costs and the need for workable, long-term solutions that donʼt compromise the quality of care they receive and make it more efficient. Since February of 2008, Hospital Sisters Health System, physicians and other health care leaders have been collaborating to write our own story of health care reform. We call it Care Integration. You will call it great health care. At HSHS, Care Integration is the latest chapter in our legacy. The idea of health care that is connected and in tune with the needs of people has always been the Mission of our founding Hospital Sisters of St. Francis. While the expectations people have of health care may have changed, the essential HSHS Mission has not. People today want superior, contemporary, nimble health care that is effective and efficient. Care Integration is creating a system to meet those needs. We are humbled by the outstanding work done in St. Josephʼs Hospital to care for patients, their families, communities and each other. 5 Dear Colleagues and Friends of St. Josephʼs Hospital, Our country is navigating healthcare reform in the midst of a long and deep economic downturn. This is a difficult journey because healthcare must be made affordable and accessible to everyone, yet there are many obstacles. Our Wisconsin-Western Division hospitals, St. Josephʼs and Sacred Heart, are working together to ensure the quality and safety of medical care while finding innovative and new ways to provide and finance it. As not-for-profit community hospitals started over a century ago by the Hospital Sisters, we provide care for people in their times of greatest need and vulnerability. Our care is for the bodies, minds and spirits of our patients and their loved ones. We build on the strengths of our past and willingly serve as advocates for all, particularly the poor and other vulnerable populations. Our Mission follows Catholic social teaching and values. Health care is a basic human right and an essential building block for a just and free society. The next several years will bring many dramatic changes and we are working with our partner medical groups on innovative ways to improve patient care in our region. The Wisconsin-Western Division is also focused on recruiting and retaining the very best physicians possible to be part of our regional healthcare delivery system. We celebrate diversity and innovation in the practice of medicine and work together to standardize and elevate patient care outcomes. We are also working hard to keep costs as low as possible, and at the same time continually elevate our level of care. Even before we entered this turbulent and uncertain economy, careful fiscal stewardship something we learned from the Hospital Sisters has always been the right thing to do. 6 Sharing Our Resources To Nurture A Stronger Community Throughout our nearly 125-year journey, St. Joseph's Hospital has been diligent in its mission to provide benefit to our communities and to care for the most needy among us. This past fiscal year: Benefits for the poor Benefits include charity care at cost, Medicaid shortfalls, various public programs, community health services and other benefits. $5,529,245 Benefits for the broader community Benefits include community education, wellness services and patient care services. $797,004 Medicare shortfalls Benefits include providing care and services to primarily elderly beneficiaries of the Medicare program, in excess of governmental and managed care contract payments to the hospital. $6,255,019 Mission Outreach The Hospital Sisters Mission Outreach is striving to change the world while being responsible stewards of the environment. Through its recycling and redistribution efforts, St. Joseph's Hospital contributed equipment, supplies, linens, furniture and various other items to this effort. 71,000 pounds of materials were contributed to hospitals and clinics in six different countries this year. A steam dryer from the former laundry at St. Josephʼs Hospital was removed by CR Outdoor HTG of Elk Mound for shipment to a mission hospital in Honduras. 4

But, thanks to bereavement counseling materials provided in part by the Friends of St. Joseph s Hospital. Home Hospice families in mourning are finding some added support and comfort in their times of need. St. Joseph s Home Hospice Program s print materials feature helpful articles, grief support information sources, suggested online references and more all mailed, free of charge, to bereaved Hospice families. Materials are mailed one, two, three, six, nine, twelve and fourteen months after the patient s death, with each installment focusing on different topics and areas of grief support. Paulette Lower, Hospice Bereavement Supervisor, said grief support services such as telephone calls, personal visits and support groups are helpful for grieving families but that educational literature also fills a need. The Hospice Program sends out bereavement counseling materials to more than 200 families each year, often receiving positive feedback in return. 15 Good hearing is important. That s why every baby born at St. Joseph s Hospital receives a newborn hearing screening before discharge. When the Birth Center s newborn hearing machine needed to be replaced, the Center s nursing team turned to the Friends of St. Joseph s Hospital for help. The Friends quickly stepped in and purchased the $20,000 piece of technology, allowing the Birth Center staff to resume the screenings. The ALGO 5 Newborn Hearing Screener tests babies hearing using a quick, painless method called automated auditory brainstem response. The test is done by placing earphones over the baby s ears and applying three sensors on his or her forehead, neck and shoulder. Soft clicking sounds are generated, and the baby s responses are detected by the sensors. Test results appear on a computer screen, and newborns pass or fail the screening. New parents Tom and Niki Hooper found the hearing screening tool comforting after their son, Logan, was born this summer. I think it s essential to have this screening tool available. It s one less thing you have to worry about when you leave, said Niki, whose son passed the screen. Babies who do not pass the screen are quickly referred to an audiologist for further evaluation. While it is unlikely that they will have severe hearing loss, it is important that the problem be identified early. Norseng B eing in a treatment facility can be an intimidating experience for patients but having comfortable, attractive furniture often helps put them at ease and make them feel more at home. That s what the staff members at the L.E. Phillips-Libertas Treatment Center have found after installing $50,000 worth of new furnishings in their facility. A $100,000 grant from the L.E. Phillips Family Foundation funded new high-quality, hospital-grade furnishings in the Center s group therapy rooms, entryway, public lecture room, group treatment rooms and counselors offices as well as flat-screen TVs in its lounges. It s all focused on our clients needs, said Tom Fuchs, the Treatment Center s director. It was a wonderful gift. Truly, it has made such a difference in our facility in terms of the way our patients treat our facility and also the pride we have in what we do. Fuchs said the facility plans to spend the second $50,000 on beds and nightstands for patient rooms. A grant from the L.E. Phillips Family Foundation helped fund new furnishings at the L.E. Phillips-Libertas Treatment Center in Chippewa Falls. 16

White White's Wildwood Retreat Whitetail Country Club Wild Ridge Golf C hildren coming to SPOTS House for therapy have a helpful new tool at their disposal following a generous gift provided by generous donors and the Friends of St. Joseph s Hospital. SPOTS House, the hospital s pediatric therapy program, was in need of an electric, adjustable-height worktable for children. This hi-low table, as it is referred to in the field, is wheelchair-accessible, able to be adjusted to the height of the child and large enough to accommodate up to six children. The hi-low table would help their clinic tremendously. The ability to adapt the table to the child s size for the specific therapy activity he or she is practicing is essential for the child s success. Electric tables like this can cost as much as $4,000. The hospital struggled with this request scince it wasn t considered an essential need. So, they turned to the Friends for help. With the assistance of Board member Bob Hogseth, Spectrum Industries of Chippewa Falls designed and built a beautifully crafted, one-of-a-kind adjustable worktable for about half the cost. The SPOTS therapists received their new table this summer and use it on a daily basis. The table now serves many therapeutic purposes, including eating and developing fine motor skills such as coloring and puzzles. It is also used with groups of children at SPOTS Handwriting Clinic. We are so happy to have it and grateful to the donors who support the Friends of St. Joseph s Hospital, said Jenny Dykes, senior occupational therapist at SPOTS House. It was a wonderful Christmas present in July. 18 Gifts made to the Friends of St. Joseph s Hospital supplied a new adjustable-height worktable at SPOTS House, making therapy sessions easier for pediatric patients.
