2 Since 1987, the Egyptian Universities Network (EUN) has been working to serve Egyptian Government Universities. EUN serves 15 (+2) universities and 19 different smaller scientific and educational organizations. EUN is a unit of the Supreme Council of Universities (SCU). EUN is funded primarily by the Universities subscriptions and also by various services.

4 EUN Top Level Domain Role: Setting.eg domain name policies and rules. Setting and applying a procedure for restructuring or creating new subdomains. Operating and administrating.eg domain name server. Setting and monitoring a pricing model for.eg domain name services. Customer services to registrars and registrant. Maintaining a continues service (24/7 working hours, standby backup system and weekly/monthly backup)

5 Rules and Polices for registration under.eg: 1. The name Servers must be physically located in Egypt. 2. The owner of the domain name must be registered in Egypt or has a representative registered in Egypt. 3. The domain name must be related to the entity name and should not be a generic name. 4. The domain name must be consist of at least 2 c/cs and up to 22c/c, starts with alphanumeric character.

6 5. Any company registering under.com is required to provide a copy of their legal documents (commercial registration, license,.). 6. Domain name registering under.gov requires an official letter from the ministry. 7. Domain name registering under.edu requires an official letter from ministry of Education. 8. The registered domain name must have an active primary and secondary DNS server. 9. Domain names may be registered for active usage or for inactive usage.

7 10. Domain names will register based on "first come first serve". 11. For disputes over a domain name between two organizations, EUN is not responsible for the verifications of rights to a name. 12. Registration under.eg will cost 100 Egyptian pounds and annual renewal will cost 100 L.E. 13. The domain name will be registered within 2 working days form delivering the application, required documents and registration fee.

8 The second level domain names available under.eg:.edu : for educational sites, it includes 225 subdomains..sci : for educational sites, it includes 30 subdomains..gov : for governmental sites, it includes 432 subdomains..mil : for military sites, it includes 9 subdomains..org : for non-commercial organizations, it includes 434 subdomains..net : for networks, it includes 40 subdomains..com : for commercial organizations, it includes 3500 subdomains..eun : for Egyptian Universities Network, it includes 27 subdomains. The total no. of sub domains is 5877

10 How can I register a domain name under.eg? 1. DNS application on the EUN website. 2. Required documents according to the domain type. 3. Registration fee. These can be sent directly to EUN or through one of ISP s working in the area. The domain name will be registered within 2 working days from fulfillment the requirements.

12 Hardware and software in use: Hardware: Sun Enterprise 450: Dual processor Ultrasparc II 296 MHZ. RAM 2GB H.D 2x 9 GB OS Sun Solaris 9 This will be upgraded to Sun Enterprise 3500 Software package: Bind This will be upgraded to Bind 9.3.2

13 Egyptian IDN Testbed: We suggest the names (Arabic strings) for the Top IDN cctld for Egypt and Universities name as a first stage for implementation. We use the same platform we are actual using now for registration and implementation of.eg. We have invited all Egyptian Universities to do their testbeds under the structure of our primary testbed. We are in the phase of testing with all Universities to find whatever problems they may face.

14 To make use of the existing implementation of.eg cctl: We have converted the Arabic strings to what is called "punycode" there is a tools we have found on the WWW like the one at Then we have added a zone in the /etc/named.conf at level of.eg (equivalent to) having the name (what is ("مصر to" equivalent The zone file as ordinary file having the subdomains with names of converted strings.

15 EUN future plans: Operating a whois server to maintain accurate and complete online access to information about egtld. Setting and operating an automated system for interfacing with registrars. Setting and monitoring a pricing model for.eg domain name services. Setting a new model for the operation as whole. Creating new first level domains under.eg. Promoting increased use of egtld. Preparing to have a standard contract with the registrars.
