Research Assistant, An Evaluation of Orange County s Family Justice Center s Survivor s of Domestic Violence Program. PI: Dr. Raymond Novaco. June-August Duties included: Organization, assessment, and preliminary analysis of pilot data; and recommendations on restructuring data collection instrument and feasibility of program evaluation. Research Assistant, Prisoner Grievances in California: Disputing Behind Bars. UC Irvine, PIs: Dr. Valerie Jenness and Dr. Kitty Calavita. Funded by the National Science Foundation ($218,322) Duties included: Transcription of qualitative interviews conducted with inmates in California prisons; and consultation on themes discovered in interviews to determine the inmate understanding of the appeals process. 6

7 Research Assistant, The Victimization of Transgender Inmates: An Empirical Examination of a Vulnerable Population in Prison. PI: Dr. Valerie Jenness. Funded by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation ($199,999) Duties included: Consulting on research instrument; constructing database and completing all quantitative data entry; consulting on statistical analysis and interpretation; and contributing to the final report. Research Assistant, Responding to the Prison Rape Elimination Act: A Study of Violence in California Correctional Facilities. PIs: Dr. Valerie Jenness and Dr. Cheryl Maxson. Funded by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation ($399,994) Duties included: Training to conduct interviews in prison in order to maximize reliability and accuracy of data, while minimizing stress and discomfort of the participant; consulting on the research instrument; conducting interviews with inmates at two California prisons, including collecting both quantitative and qualitative narratives about their experiences with violence and sexual assault; constructing database and entering data, including coding narratives, for over 300 interviews; and editing final report. Research Assistant for Dr. Valerie Jenness Duties include: Analyzing data from inmate tracking databases to get estimates of frequency of prison violence; analyzing longitudinal data on inmates appeals; collecting and summarizing all recent research on hate crimes for an annual review article for publication; conducting statistical analysis of UCR hate crime data; and editing manuscripts for journal publication. Research Assistant for Dr. James Meeker. Summer Duties included: Designing an evaluation plan for Legal Aid s Earned Income Tax Credit Assistance Program to determine if the needs of underserved communities were being met and to understand the experience of those running the program; designing a research instrument and conducting interviews with approximately forty administrators of the program; analyzing data collected by the program module to understand the user experience of applying for Earned Income Tax Credit; and preparing complete evaluation report using qualitative and quantitative data to discuss the success of Legal Aid s I-CAN! program from the administrative/implementation perspective as well as from the user perspective.
