3 CPE Expo Speakers Paul Bustos, CFE, CRMA Education: BS Accounting and IM - UT Dallas; MS Accounting and IM - UT Dallas Experience and Qualifications: Mr. Bustos has twelve years experience as an advisor providing forensic and litigation services, risk management services and receivership stewardship to business owners, government agencies, and legal counsel. He has a particular emphasis in business investigations with a focus on reconstructing missing records, employee theft, internal controls, hidden assets, and other fraud related matters. Prior to joining Weaver, Mr. Bustos practiced as an in-house accountant at a Big Four accounting firm, and a manufacturing company. He currently hold the position of Senior Associate II in the Forensic & Litigation Services. He also has served in the United States Marine Corps and the United States Army Reserve. Michael Crain Education: Masters Information Management - Arizona State University Experience and Qualifications: Mr. Crain has extensive experience in Information Management, database development, business intelligence, integration, and a wide range of security issues. Past employment has included working at Mayo Hospital; private consulting; website development; hosting capabilities; securities levels; and marketing campaigns. He also has been involved in multiple entrepreneurial endeavors ranging from restaurants, custom construction, and serving as CFO for a large manufacturing company that designs processing equipment for cleanroom environments. He has many years experience as a bridge designer, inspector, Traffic Data Coordinator and Nuclear Power pipe designer. Currently, Mr. Crain serves as Professor of MIS at University of Texas Permian Basin, J.D. Faircloth, CPA Education: BBA - Hardin-Simmons University; MBA - UT Austin Experience and Qualifications: Mr. Faircloth began his accounting career in 1972 with a national accounting firm dealing primarily with public and privately owned companies engaged in the oil and gas industry. From 1980 until 2004, he was engaged in the public and private practice of accounting with an emphasis in oil and gas accounting, including natural gas gathering and marketing entities. In addition, he successfully took the first member-owned electric cooperative public in the U.S. Has extensive Securities and Exchange Commission reporting experience an has served as chief executive, chief financial, and/or chief accounting officer for a number of publicly owned companies. He joined Johnson Miller's audit department in May 2004 and became a shareholder and director in January He holds membership in the TSCPA and the AICPA. He also is a former Midland mayor and city councilman and has served on various Midland civic boards and commissions Trish Fritsche, CPA, CFF, CITP, CGMA Education: BS Accounting Control Systems - University of North Texas Experience and Qualifications: Ms. Fritsche currently works as a Senior Manager at Weaver. She is a CPA, Certified in Financial Forensics, Certified IT professional and Chartered Global Management Accountant. Services to clients and counsel include fraud investigations, analyzing accounting documents, bank tracings and investigating questioned transactions and analysis thereon in civil and family law cases including assistance to enforcement agencies and associated expert testimony. A former auditor and preparer of financial statements, she specializes in understanding complex financial analysis and the associated effects of fraud on financial statements. Ms. Fritsche currently serves as Chair of the TSCPA Business Valuation, Forensics and Litigation Services Committee, as well as serving on the Business and Industry Task Force in Austin and the TSCPA PAC in Fort Worth.
4 David Gair J.D. Education: BA - Bates College; MA - Middlebury College; J.D. - University of Denver Sturm College of Law; LL.M Taxation - University of Denver Sturm College of Law Experience and Qualifications: Mr. Gair is an established tax attorney who is Board Certified in Tax Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. His focus is on tax matters and tax litigation in the U.S. Tax Court, U.S. Court of Federal Claims, U.S. Bankruptcy Courts, and U.S. District Courts. His representation involves complex international and domestic civil and criminal matters. His practice also involves tax planning for entrepreneurs and businesses. His holistic style of planning involves examining solutions that best serve the client from the myriad of taxation, liability concerns, and other regulatory issues. He has represented clients in IRS criminal matters, voluntary disclosures and in pre-indictment investigations resulting in no indictment being filed. He is a member of the State Bar Advanced Tax Law and Tax Law 101; Texas Bar Association, Section of Taxation, Leadership Academy; American Bar Association; Dallas Bar Association; and the Tax Council of the Tax Section of the Dallas Bar Association. Ken Garner Education: BS - Lubbock Christian University; Masters in Taxation - Baylor University Experience and Qualifications: Mr. Garner has over 20 years experience serving a diverse set of clients throughout the country. His clients include public entities, large family partnerships, S Corps, trusts, VEBA trusts, not for profit entities, hospital systems, governments, universities, and private foundations. He joined Ernst & Young in Working with EY's National Exempt Organization group, he conducts training seminars both internally and externally on issues related to tax exempt entities including post issuance compliance for tax exempt bonds, UBTI, governance issues, and issues that boards of directors should notice on Form 990. He is a member of the AICPA, National Association of Bond Lawyers, and the TSCPA. He also is very active with Optimist International where he has served on the board of directors and currently is the President-Elect for the international organization. Narita Holmes, MBA, CPA, CIA Education: BBA in Accounting - UT Austin; MBA Management - UT Permian Basin Experience and Qualifications: Ms. Holmes has been a Texas CPA since 1971 and has extensive experience in both the financial and purchasing sectors. Previous employment includes three years with a big-eight firm and 15 years as CFO for financial institutions, as well as, 18 years as Purchasing Agent for Ector County. She also served as Director of Audit and Compliance for the University of Texas of the Permian Basin. Currently, Ms. Holmes is a Lecturer in Accountancy and serves as Compliance and Title IX Coordinator for UTPB. She is a frequent speaker on various topics for workshops, conferences and in-service training. Richard James, J.D. Education: Bachelor of Accountancy - University of Mississippi; Master of Taxation - University of Mississippi; J.D. - Tulane University School of Law; LL.M Taxation - University of Florida School of Law Experience and qualifications: Prior to launching his law firm in 2012, Mr. James served four years as General Counsel of RB Products Holding, LLC, a chemical distribution and manufacturing company. His legal practice focuses on three interrelated practice areas: estate planning and probate; taxation; and business law. His practice largely centers on wills, estate planning, probate, business transactions, and taxation, primarily representing privately owned businesses and individuals. He advises clients on business, tax and estate planning so that client do not need two or three different advisors for those crucial roles. He is a member of the State Bar of Florida, and the State Bar of Texas. Jerry Love, CPA, PFS, CFP, CVA, ABV, CITP, CFF, MAFF, CGMA Education: Abilene Christian University
5 Experience and Qualifications: Mr. Love has earned the distinction of being one of only two CPAs in the U.S. to hold all five credentials granted by the AICPA. He has 37 years experience, both in the large local firm environment and as the sole owner of Jerry Love CPA, LLC., which he opened on February 14, In 1999, he was the recipient of the TSCPA's Distinguished Public Service Award. In 2006, CPA Magazine listed him as one of the 100 Most Influential Practitioners in America. In 2009, CPA Magazine listed him as one of the 40 Top 40 Tax Advisors to Know During a Recession. He also served as Chairman of the TSCPA in Jerry has served as President or Chairman of more than 14 nonprofit organizations and has held the office for multiple years for several of the organizations. In addition to these roles he has served on over 45 other nonprofit organization's boards in a variety of offices and roles. Bob Owen, CPA Education: Bachelor degree - SMU; Advanced Management Program - Harvard University Graduate School of Business Experience and Qualifications: Mr. Owen has practiced public accounting in Texas for 35 years, both in local and an international accounting firm where he served in national management positions. He co-authored "The Ernst & Young Guide to Financing for Growth". He joined TSCPA in his current position as Managing Director for Regulation and Legislation after his retirement from Ernst & Young. A member of TSCPA for more than 40 years, he served as President in He also served two terms on the AICPA council. Mr. Owen has been actively working with TSCPA's legislative efforts, first as a volunteer and now as TSCPA's Austin representative. During the legislative session, he is onsite in Austin and provides legislative insight through a weekly electronic newsletter. Bob also is an active member of his community, serving various civic and non-profit organizations. John Sharbaugh, CAE Education: BA, Pennsylvania State University; MBA, University of Florida Experience and qualifications: Mr. Sharbaugh is the CEO and Executive Director of the TSCPA. Most recently the vice president of State Societies and Regulatory Affairs with the AICPA in Washington, D.C., John is an experienced association executive with over 23 years of accomplishments in various management positions in the accounting field. Before starting with AICPA in 1988, he served as executive director of the North Carolina Association of CPAs and deputy executive director and CPE manager for the Florida Institute of CPAs. He received a Certified Association Executive designation in 1991 from the American Society of Association Executives. Wayne Shaw, PhD., CPA Education: BSB in Accounting - Oklahoma City University; MBA - University of North Carolina at Greensboro; PhD. - UT Austin Experience and qualifications: Dr. Shaw joined the faculty of SMU in 1995 and currently is the Helmut Sohmen Distinguished Professor of Corporate Governance at the Edwin L. Cox School of Business. Prior to joining SMU, he taught at Cornell University and the University of Colorado at Boulder. He teaches courses in corporate governance, financial accounting, taxation, and mergers and acquisitions at both the undergraduate and MBA levels. Prior to entering academics, Dr. Shaw worked for the IRS in the large case audit group, drug enforcement, appellate, and the Corporate Tax Division of the National Office. He also was employed as a tax law specialist for A.M. Pullen & Co., CPAs. Dr. Shaw has been involved in the development and presentation of training materials for major corporate and not-for profit entities and has served as an expert witness for the SEC and various law firms in the areas of corporate governance and ethics, financial reporting, and federal income taxation. He is licensed by the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy as an ethics instructor and has published a book that is used in that course. In 2012 Dr. Shaw received the Dallas CPA Society Stanley J. Scott CPE award and in 2013, he received the D Magazine Excellence in Corporate Governance Award.
