A normal eye is protected by a layer of natural tears. If you need to use eye drops several times a day to make your eyes comfortably moist, you should consult your eye doctor. Helps increase tear production with continued use. Please see inside back cover for attached prescribing information.
Using drops or artificial tears several times a day? You may have Chronic Dry Eye due to reduced tear production. Chronic Dry Eye (keratoconjunctivitis sicca) is a medical condition that can result from the eyes reduced ability to produce tears. Recent studies show it affects 3.2 million Americans. Research has shown that Chronic Dry Eye can be the result of a functional problem in the tear-producing glands of the eyes. This causes a decline in the quantity of tears the eyes make naturally. Too often, this decline has a noticeable impact on one s day-to-day routine. Artificial tears can provide temporary relief by lubricating the eye; however, they cannot help increase tear production. If untreated, Chronic Dry Eye can lead to more serious problems, including increased risk of infection and possibly vision impairment.
RESTASIS (cyclosporine ophthalmic emulsion) 0.05% is the only prescription eye drop approved by the FDA to help increase your ability to produce tears which may be supressed by inflammation due to Chronic Dry Eye. Increased tear production was not seen in patients using topical steroid drops or tear duct plugs. RESTASIS has been clinically proven to increase tear production that may be suppressed by ocular inflammation. The approved treatment is one drop in the morning and one drop at night. Indeed, many patients using RESTASIS Ophthalmic Emulsion report noticeable improvement in tear production with continued use. Individual results may vary. RESTASIS is packaged in convenient single-use droppers. One drop in each eye, twice a day, is the recommended dosage. RESTASIS Ophthalmic Emulsion, the only prescription eye drop that helps increase tear production with continued use. Important Safety Information: RESTASIS Ophthalmic Emulsion should not be used by patients with active eye infections and has not been studied in patients with a history of herpes viral infections of the eye. The most common side effect is a burning sensation. Please see inside back cover for attached prescribing information. Make an appointment to ask your eye doctor about RESTASIS.
Hundreds of thousands of people are using RESTASIS every day. Because it works! One drop, twice a day, with continued use helps your eyes produce their own tears. More of your own tears? Who wouldn t want that? RESTASIS (cyclosporine ophthalmic emulsion) 0.05% has made a difference in the lives of countless men and women who suffer from Chronic Dry Eye due to reduced tear production. By helping their eyes produce more tears naturally, RESTASIS has given them effective assistance in maintaining the moisture level that is so important to healthy eyes. The prescribed dosage just one drop in each eye, twice a day has been clinically proven to make a noticeable improvement in tear production with continued use. Please see page 2 for Important Safety Information.
Frequently asked questions: Why do I need to use drops so often? Artificial tears can help moisten eyes with Chronic Dry Eye. But they cannot help increase tear production. What are the causes of Chronic Dry Eye? Chronic Dry Eye can be caused by a functional problem in the tear-producing gland of the eye. This can result in a declining quantity of tears. High risk factors for this condition include hormonal changes associated with aging and menopause, autoimmune diseases such as arthritis, lupus, and Sjögren s syndrome, and medical conditions, such as diabetes. How do I know if I have it? Your eye doctor can check your eyes for clinical signs of Chronic Dry Eye. He or she also may use several quick and painless tests to measure visual clarity, tear production, eye surface dryness, and damage to the cornea or conjunctiva (the membrane that lines the eyelids). Often, a patient s description of his or her condition is sufficient for the eye doctor to make a diagnosis. Your eye doctor will find it helpful if you describe your condition in detail. If you routinely use artificial tears several times a day and are still experiencing uncomfortable dryness, you should see your eye doctor and ask about RESTASIS Ophthalmic Emulsion. Please see inside back cover for attached prescribing information.
Why may I need prescription medicine? Although over-the-counter eye drops and artificial tears may provide short-term relief, they cannot increase tear production. To effectively address a source of Chronic Dry Eye reduced tear production your doctor may determine it is medically necessary for you to use a prescription medication proven to increase the eyes natural output of tears. How effective is RESTASIS? Many patients who used RESTASIS (cyclosporine ophthalmic emulsion) 0.05% as directed one drop, twice a day began to experience a significant increase in tear production with continued use. Patients may continue to get benefits of RESTASIS with continued use. Will I still need artificial tears? RESTASIS Ophthalmic Emulsion can be used with artificial tears. Some patients continue use of their lubricant eye drops along with their RESTASIS therapy. But as your eyes improve in their ability to make their own tears, you may find you don t need them as often. Is RESTASIS well tolerated? RESTASIS Ophthalmic Emulsion has a favorable safety profile. In fact, in clinical studies, there was no increase in eye infection or detectable drug absorption in the blood in up to 12 months of treatment. Furthermore, interaction with other drugs would not be expected. What about side effects? RESTASIS has a favorable safety profile. The most common side effect is a burning sensation. Other side effects include eye redness, discharge, watery eyes, eye pain, foreign body sensation, itching, stinging, and blurred vision. How long will I have to use RESTASIS? At present, there is no cure for Chronic Dry Eye. You receive benefits from RESTASIS Ophthalmic Emulsion as long as you continue its use. Always consult with your eye doctor before discontinuing use. Please see page 2 for Important Safety Information.
Is RESTASIS available over the counter? No, you will need to see your eye doctor to obtain a prescription for RESTASIS Ophthalmic Emulsion. Is RESTASIS covered by health insurance? If your eye doctor determines that RESTASIS Ophthalmic Emulsion is the appropriate treatment for you, you should know that RESTASIS is reimbursed by many prescription plans offered by major health insurers in the United States. Reimbursement amounts vary by plan. For the specific details of your own coverage, it is always wise to consult your health insurance carrier for the most up-to-date information. Make an appointment to ask your eye doctor about RESTASIS.
Do you have Chronic Dry Eye due to reduced tear production? Your eye doctor can determine the answer. You can help your eye doctor make this determination by describing your condition in detail and sharing all your questions. It may help to write them down on this sheet, tear it out, and bring it with you on your next visit. When did you notice your eyes were producing fewer tears? How would you describe the way your eyes feel? How often do you use artificial tears? times per day Has your use of artificial tears increased over time? yes no Answer these four simple questions and discuss the answers with your doctor. Because RESTASIS is available, even if you ve spoken to your eye doctor about Chronic Dry Eye, you may have an important reason to bring up the topic once again. Review this questionnaire with your eye doctor to determine if a prescription for RESTASIS Ophthalmic Emulsion is right for you.
