EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME Aims The aims of the programme are: To provide students with the comprehensive knowledge and skills required to work as professional.net software developers at an Advanced level To compare and contrast.net strategies with other leading technologies. To provide a specific understanding of the relevant concepts, processes, methods and tools related to the.net platform and their application in the design and development of enterprise scale web applications To develop an understanding of patterns and best practices in the architecture of software applications using.net technologies. To develop the ability to apply sound software design principles and practical skills. To develop a critical approach to developing and evaluating software requirements and solutions. To develop students ability to work independently and as part of a commercial team. The additional aim of the MSc Project component of the programme is: To expand the student s expertise by providing the opportunity to undertake a significant piece of independent work. 2

4 4. PROGRAMME STRUCTURES AND REQUIREMENTS, LEVELS, MODULES, CREDITS AND AWARDS The academic year is split into three trimesters, each of weeks (12 teaching plus exam revision weeks). 5 MSc/PgD/PgC Web Systems Development (.NET) (Part/Time) Year 1 Trimester A of Study MMI Advanced Software Development and Application Lifecycle Management Year 1 Trimester B of Study MMI NET Enterprise Application Development Year 2 Trimester A of Study MMI NET Web Application Development Year 2 Trimester B of Study MMN Project Management, Research Methods and Ethics Year 3 of Study MMI Masters Project 60M Exit Awards: PgC in Computing may be awarded on achievement of any 60 credits from the above modules PgC in Web Systems Development (.NET) may be awarded on achievement of 60 credits from the above modules to include at least 30 credits achieved by passing one or more of MMI and MMI PgD in Web Systems Development (.NET) e awarded on achievement of 120 credits by passing all the above modules Masters Project During Trimester B of the session prior to the scheduled undertaking of the Masters Project, the student is required to develop (with the support of a named supervisor and the guidance provided by the MSc Project Handbook for the programme) a suitable proposal for a viable MSc Project. This process will provide support to the student in MSc proposal development and a process for the formal scrutiny and approval of their proposal. This process will give students 2 opportunities (with feedback) during that trimester to produce a viable proposal. If both opportunities are exhausted the student will not be permitted to continue to the Project. Exit Award: MSc in Web Systems Development (.NET) awarded on achievement of 180 credits (120 credits + dissertation) 4

ASSESSMENT REGULATIONS The Glasgow Caledonian University Assessment Regulations (October 2012) apply to this programme Programme specific aspects: Paragraph 8: In line with paragraph of the new Taught Postgraduate Assessment Regulations the pass mark for all taught modules is 50%. The Pass mark for the Masters project is 50% Paragraph 31: PgC Computing may be awarded for successful completion of any two taught modules. PgC in Web Systems Development (.NET) may be awarded on achievement two modules including one or more of MMI and MMI PgD Web Systems Development (.NET) may be awarded for successful completion of the four taught modules. Assessment Boards (Regulation 1.14 Appendix 1) This postgraduate programme has potential PgD or MSc exit points at the end of Trimester A, B and in September. The Assessment Board will meet formally at all three points and consider all marks for all students. Role of External Assessor: External Assessors are appointed to the Assessment Board after being approved by University LTSC via External Assessors Sub-Committee (through the submission of an EXT1 form). The duties of an External Assessor can be found in the Appendix 2, paragraphs 2.9 and 2.11 of the Appendices to the University Assessment Regulations. The duties of an External Assessor will include the following: to ensure that the standard of any award which is recommended by the Assessment Board is comparable to the standard of similar awards conferred by Universities in the UK. to be satisfied that the work and decisions of the Assessment Board are consistent with the policies and regulations of the University and best practice in Higher Education to ensure that students have been assessed fairly and within the regulations approved by the University for the programme to comment on the appropriateness and consistency of assessment practices and procedures across the modules which comprise the award to inform the University on any matter which, in the External Assessor s view, militates against the maintenance of proper academic standards 5

7 to inform the Director of Governance and Academic Quality if they decide to resign over a matter of principle in order that this may be brought to the attention of Senate as a matter of urgency to produce an annual report for consideration by the School Board and the Learning and Teaching Subcommittee, on the standards attained by students on the programme and any other matters which may seem appropriate to report. 6
