3 Educational Aims of The overall aim of the programme is to provide research training in human geography to prepare students for a career in humanities and social science research at doctoral level through a high quality, supportive teaching and learning environment. It develops specialised knowledge of the interaction between society and space and an understanding of how research underpins cultural analysis, interpretation and practice that gives graduates the opportunity to: Develop specialist knowledge and understanding of human geography and its approaches, philosophies and ontologies, and methods of analysis and interpretation; Develop critical, reflexive thinking; Develop research skills in human geography to prepare for doctoral research in human geography and cognate disciplines in the humanities and social sciences, or to undertake social and cultural research in the private, public and third sectors; Develop skills in qualitative, quantitative, textual and visual analysis. Learning Outcomes: Cognitive Skills On the completion of this course successful students will assess contrasting ideas, explanations and policies employ analytical approaches and problem solve critically discuss texts, images and data abstract and synthesise information develop reasoned and evidence-based arguments Teaching/Learning Methods and Learning Outcomes: Transferable Skills On the completion of this course successful students will Teaching/Learning Methods and think independently and reflexively ; research supervision communicate effectively in oral or written form presentations; group discussion; coursework feedback recognise ethical and moral issues in information collection,

4 retrieval, analysis and discussion locate, organise and analyse evidence from a broad range of social and cultural sources Learning Outcomes: Knowledge and Understanding On the completion of this course successful students will demonstrate an advanced, yet broad, understanding of the significance of space and place to past, present and future social worlds and cultural forms through a grounding in the major schools of social theory and an examination of key thinkers and ideas on space describe and critically evaluate advanced social and humanitiesbased research skills for the undertaking of substantial research display an understanding of how recent developments in cultural, historical and social geography contribute to our understanding of pre-modern and modern worlds assess the relevance and quality of a substantial range of literatures and primary and secondary research materials Teaching/Learning Methods and Learning Outcomes: Subject Specific Skills On the completion of this course successful students will Teaching/Learning Methods and be able to demonstrate expertise in geographical research practices apply spatial theories to a range of real-world situations critically assess geographical concepts
