1 UNIVERSITY OF PERADENIYA DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES IN STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING YEAR 2015/2016 INTRODUCTION This postgraduate programme is conducted by the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Peradeniya. The course consists of 6 to 7 compulsory (4 core and 2-3 electives) taught subjects conducted through lectures, tutorials, assignments, laboratory and design classes and research projects. The 2-3 elective courses can be selected for a basket of 7 courses as per students requirement. The course will be conducted from January 2016 to July Department of Civil Engineering, University of Peradeniya has excellent laboratory facilities and a team of highly qualified academic staff. 2 COURSE STRUCTURE AND DURATION The course consists of lectures on the 6-7 taught subjects described under subject description below and research project/ independent study CE601/CE602. The taught subjects will be conducted over TWO terms on Fridays 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Saturdays 8 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The research project/ independent study CE601/CE602 shall be commenced within the first term and will be continued till the end of the third term. The core course and electives to be offered in year 2015/2016 are as follows; Structural Engineering Programme Coordinator: Core courses CE614 (3) Finite Elements Methods CE619 (3) Computer Aided Structural Design CE622 (3) Design of Concrete Structures CE640 (3) Foundation Engineering Elective courses CE610 (3) Concrete Technology CE615 (2) Steel Structures CE618 (3) Construction Materials CE623 (2) High-Rise Buildings CE624 (2) Construction Management CE625 (2) Construction Planning, Methods and Equipments CE626 (2) Bridge Engineering In order to obtain 12 credits per Term, it is required to conduct classes for at least 4 sessions. 3 Examinations in respect of the subjects taught in a term will be held within the term, and the progress of the research/ design projects are continuously evaluated during and at the end of each term. At the end of 2 semesters the student will complete all taught courses and will have earned 24 credits as follows; Item Description Number of credits 1 From 4 core course (4 x 3 credits) 12 2 From 2 elective courses of 3 credits or 3 elective 6 courses of 2 credits (2 x 3credits or 3x 2 credits) 3 From CE:601 Independent study or any other similar 3 course 4 From seminar course 3 # Subtotal at the end of 2 semesters 24 Postgraduate Diploma Programme Postgraduate Diploma students are required to sit for written examinations in the 5 taught subjects (4 core subjects and 1 elective) and submit a report on the Independent study (CE601) at the end of the third term. They may be required to face a viva-voce. A period of three terms (twelve months) from the beginning of the postgraduate course may be sufficient for the successful completion of the Postgraduate Diploma MScEng Degree Programme Those who obtain good grades for the 6-7 taught subjects and demonstrate satisfactory progress in CE601 may continue the course up to MScEng degree. In addition to the requirements at the first two terms, the student has to register and get evaluation for CE602 in every term until he/she completes the MScEng degree. The students who are registered for the MScEng degree course are required to submit a dissertation on the project (CE602) with a substantial research component. They will also be required to give a seminar and face a vivavoce at the completion of the dissertation in the MScEng programme. The candidates are also strongly encouraged to either present the research material at a national conference or submit a paper of such standard that is acceptable to be published in a refereed journal. A period of eighteen months from the beginning of the postgraduate diploma course may be sufficient for successful completion of the MScEng degree. ELIGIBILITY (1) BScEng degree in Civil Engineering with first or second class honours. or (2) A Civil Engineering degree or equivalent qualification with minimum one year experience in a related field.
4 COURSE FEES Rs. 200,000/= for up to PGDip Level (Terms I and II). Rs. 50,000/= (in addition to the above for MScEng Term III) In addition to above fee a refundable library deposit of Rs. 10,000/= should be paid at the time of the registration for the postgraduate programme. APPLICATION PROCEDURE Every application for enrolment must be made on the prescribed form obtained from the Assistant Registrar, Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya. Perfected applications should reach the Assistant Registrar, Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya, Peradeniya on or before 31st October The following items should be submitted along with the application: a. Two letters of recommendation. At least one should be from the applicant s teacher at the University. (Letters of recommendation are considered confidential) b. Degree/Diploma/Professional membership certificate/s (Photostat copy/copies) c. Birth certificate (Photostat copy) d. Letter of consent from the employer (if funded by the employer) e. 1 self addressed envelops (22x10 cm) Originals of documents of which Photostat copies are submitted should be produced before admission, on request. Applicant should arrange to have official copies of transcripts sent direct to the Senior Assistant Registrar, Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya, Peradeniya. In the event of any discrepancy between the name appearing in the applicant s academic/professional/birth certificates and the name given by the applicant in the application, an affidavit to the effect that the applicant is the one and the same person known by such names should be sent together with the application form. Documents submitted in support of an application shall become the property of the University. Application which are received late/or incomplete in any respect are liable to be rejected. The applicants will be informed of their acceptance/non-acceptance to the particular postgraduate programme for which admission has been sought. The University may at its discretion refuse admission to any applicant.
5 SUBJECT DESCRIPTION CE601 Independent Study (Core, 2 Credits) Formulation and carrying out of an engineering research or design project under the guidance of a faculty member. Experience is gained in research or design by means of mathematical modelling, numerical analysis, and laboratory or field experimentation. At the completion of the project each student submits a technical report and presents the results orally. This work is evaluated by regular review meetings by a panel of teachers. CE602 Advance Research Project The research programme should cover aspects such as formulation of research proposal, literature review, research methodology, execution of work, analysis of results and drawing conclusions, presenting the research work leading to the thesis. This project may be an extension of CE601. A senior faculty member will act as the supervisor for each project. CE610 Concrete Technology (Elective, 3 Credits, 30 hours of lectures and tutorials, 30 hours of design/lab/project) Types of cement: composition; properties; hydration; cement testing. chemical and mineral admixtures: properties; selection criteria. Aggregate: properties; testing handling. Sustainability issues, recycled materials. Properties of concrete; testing method of concrete. Compliance criteria, Durability of concrete: alkali-aggregate reaction (AAR), sulphate attack, corrosion of metals in concrete; fire resistance. Concept of high performance concrete; methods of specifying concrete; application of current international standards. Design of high performance concrete mixes. Formwork. Production of concrete; ready-mixed concrete; replacing, finishing and curing methods. Special types of concrete and their applications: self-compacting concrete (SCC); roller-compacting concrete (RCC); pervious concrete; polymer concrete; polymer-modified concrete; reactive-powder concrete (RPC), fibrereinforced concrete; applications. Testing of concrete in structures: non-destructive and semi-destructive testing. Defects in concrete structures and remedial measures. CE614 Finite Elements Methods (Core, 3 Credits; 30 lectures and tutorials, 30 hours of design/lab/project) Revision of basics of finite element method: subdivision, stiffness, assembly, solution; Computer implementation: packages; modelling of structure: element types (beam/column, plane stress/strain, solid, plate/shell), boundary condition, loading, accuracy, convergence; Dynamic analysis using finite elements: basic dynamic analysis theory, earthquake loading, finite element procedure, natural frequencies and mode shapes, time-history analysis. CE615 Steel Structures (Elective, 2 Credits; 20 hours lectures and tutorials, 20 hours of design/lab/project) Material behaviour, limit state design and codes of practices, analysis of steel structures, design of tension and compression members, local buckling of plates, bending of beams and plate girders, lateral torsional buckling, beam-columns, torsion members, design of connections, portal frames. Plastic design of beams and frames. Introduction to steelconcrete composition structures.
6 CE618 Construction Materials (Elective, 3 Credits; 30 hours lectures and tutorials, 30 hours of design/lab/project) Types of traditional construction material; polymers, ceramics. composites and high performance engineering materials; mechanical behaviour of materials; design concepts; applications; testing methods; material selection quality assurance. Timber and masonry design. CE619 Computer Aided Structural Design (Core, 3 Credits; 30 hours lectures and tutorials, 30 hours of design/lab/project) Structural Design process and roles of the computer and the designer in interactive CAD; hardware and software for CAD; use of software packages in structural analysis and design; spreadsheets; finite element packages, drafting packages; etc. CE622 Design of Concrete Structures (Core, 3 Credits) Mechanical properties of steel and concrete: strength, constitutive relationships. Analysis of sections: elastic behaviour cracking, deformation; time-dependant behaviour; sections at collapse; behaviour of structural elements, modes of collapse. Limit states, durability, fire resistance and other prime considerations. Design and detailing of reinforced-concrete medium-rise buildings; structural configurations; robustness; loading, seismic considerations; structural connections, deep beams. Design and detailing of water retaining structures. Design and detailing of prestressed concrete structures: statically-determinate structures; statically-indeterminate structures. Application of the respective codes of practice. CE623 High-Rise Buildings (Elective, 2 Credits; 20 hours lectures and tutorials, 20 hours of design/lab/project) Planning for high-rise structures; configurations of high-rise buildings and their structural behaviour; loads on high-rise buildings; earthquake, wind, wave, blast loading; analysis and design of high-rise buildings; construction techniques; analysis and design of towers; use of computer software; building services. CE624 Construction Management (Elective, 2 Credits; 20 hours lectures and tutorials, 20 hours of design/lab/project) Estimating and tendering; contract administration; project management; cash flow forecasting and cost control; economic appraisal of projects; financial management; human resource management. CE625 Construction Planning, Methods and Equipments (Elective, 2 Credits; 20 hours lectures and tutorials, 20 hours of design/lab/project ) Advanced planning techniques; resource analysis; material management; optimization techniques; construction methods; equipments acquisition and selection; plant management; computer applications in construction planning.
