APPLICATION: Please begin by filling out the Venture Grant Application below. 2. PROPOSAL: Write a description (no more than 5 typewritten pages) of the proposed use of funds. Explain the relationship of the proposal to your academic program and/or general educational interests. Describe the forum or venue through which you will present the results of your research to the Colorado College community. 3. BUDGET: Include a detailed budget showing how you will use the requested funds. 4. RECOMMENDATION LETTER(S): Individuals should ask for a letter of recommendation from one or more faculty sponsors. If applying as a group, individual applicants must each include individual letters of support. If the faculty sponsor for the group writes a single letter of support for the entire group, he/she should address the individual qualities of each applicant. Faculty sponsors should submit their letters of recommendation directly to the Dean s Advisory Committee. 5. TRAVEL REVIEW FORM (if required): All students travelling internationally must fill out a Travel Review Form for International Travel. 6. IRB APPROVAL (if required): All students whose projects involve human subjects research must seek IRB approval for their research. 7. TRANSCRIPT: Individual applicants should include unofficial copies of their transcripts. If applying as a group, applicants should include unofficial copies of transcripts for each student in the group. Please collate the application materials into a single PDF with the parts of the application sequenced as numbered above with the exception of faculty letters of recommendation. (Faculty sponsors should submit their letters of recommendation directly to the Dean s Advisory Committee.) VENTURE GRANT REGULATIONS Venture Grant funds exist to provide opportunities for co-curricular enrichment within the aims of the curriculum and the educational philosophy of Colorado College. The Dean's Advisory Committee is interested in helping students carry out innovative projects of high merit that benefit the individual applicant and the College community. Since there are more proposals submitted than it can fund, the Dean s Advisory Committee has established the following guidelines for the review of applications and allocation of funds. 1. The Committee cannot review incomplete applications and will table those requests for funds until the next block. Please make sure that your application is complete before you submit it. 2. The Committee urges most strongly that proposals be submitted as early as possible so that Committee members will have ample time to review your proposal. All funding of proposals is limited by the availability of funds. Funds are allocated on a "first come, first served" basis. 3. The Committee looks closely at the organization and the clarity of each Venture Grant proposal, reviews the student's transcript carefully, and values substantive letters of recommendation from the faculty sponsor(s) of applicants. 4. The Committee provides a maximum of $1, for any one-student project. For research projects that involve more than one student, the applicants can request more than $ but no more than a total of $ Individual students attending conferences may request up to $ Conference funding requests involving more than one student may not exceed $ The Committee will use its discretion in awarding funds for conference registration fees. (Applicants should not expect to receive full funding for conference registration.) 6. The Committee will fund round-trip transportation for students engaged in research or who are attending conferences. If a student drives a private car, the Committee will pay travel costs at 55.5 cents per mile. If a student's research project is in an applicant's hometown, the Committee will not fund transportation or room and board costs. 7. If an applicant has received previous funding from the Committee, a subsequent proposal will receive lower priority. 8. Individual projects should have tangible results for the College community (i.e., presentations to campus, to classes, colloquia, etc.). 9. The Committee does not accept proposals for projects already in progress or completed.

6 IRB APPROVAL REQUIRED FOR RESEARCH INVOLVING SURVEYS, INTERVIEWS AND PARTICIPANT OBSERVATION Students carrying out research under the Student Research or the Faculty/Student Collaborative Research categories that involve surveys, interviews, or participant observation must receive approval from the Colorado College Institutional Review Board before their venture grants will be funded. (Venture Grants involving investigative journalism projects must similarly receive approval to be funded.) Venture Grant proposals involving any of these types of research without prior IRB approval will be tabled by the Dean s Advisory Committee, and the student will be directed to Amanda Udis-Kessler (audiskessler@coloradocollege.edu), IRB Chair. Please note that the IRB is instituting a new policy about the timing of Venture Grant-related IRB proposals. The IRB must receive IRB proposals tied to Venture Grant applications by the final Wednesday of the block before the Venture Grant will be turned in. In the past, it was acceptable to turn in an IRB proposal and a Venture Grant proposal simultaneously. Now students must complete the IRB process first. If the Dean's Advisory Committee does not have evidence of a student's approved IRB proposal when they review the Venture Grant application, the Venture Grant application will be tabled until the following month. It is faster and more efficient for students to complete an IRB proposal form and send it to Amanda for review before sending a Venture Grant proposal to the Dean s Advisory Committee. Please note that there is one exception to this rule: if you are only interviewing public, professional or expert figures and you are only asking them for their professional opinions about matters in which they have expertise (no personal or private information), you do not need to fill out an IRB proposal. Instead, Amanda with a paragraph-length description of your project and she will let the Dean s Advisory Committee know that you are exempt from requiring IRB approval. Please bear in mind that you cannot receive an exemption without writing this description and sending it to Amanda. Links to proposal forms, consent form templates, and application processes can be found at: Please read the IRB homepage carefully for detailed information about the IRB process. Please contact Amanda Udis-Kessler (audiskessler@coloradocollege.edu) with questions and concerns.
