3 Communities In Schools of Miami celebrated its 25th Anniversary in Miami Dade County. For 25 years we have provided accountable and effective programs that transform lives and impacts the overall community. O ur graduates are prepared to contribute, lead and give back to the next generation. - Richard Jacobs, Chairman of the Board Communities In Schools of Miami is an affiliate of a nationwide network of passionate professionals working in public schools to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. For the last 25 years, Communities In Schools of Miami has served over 250,000 students in Miami-Dade county. This year, Communities In Schools of Miami is serving more than 20,000 students in 27 schools community-based sites, helping to break the cycle of poverty, school failure and underemployment. This report outlines the accomplishments of Communities In Schools of Miami during the school year. It includes data on the percentage of students who were promoted from one grade to another, graduated from high school, or otherwise improved their performance as a result of their involvement with Communities In Schools and describes how this success was achieved. 4 About Communities in Schools of Miami To help students focus on learning, we see to it that their basic needs are being met. They need to feel safe and valued, they need to be fed and clothed, and they must be loved. Connecting them with caring adults and resources of support empowers our students to see the vast possibilities before them. - Elizabeth Mejia, President/ CEO, Communities In Schools of Miami Communities In Schools (CIS) is the only dropout prevention organization proven to both lower dropout rates and increase on-time graduation rates. What sets CIS apart is its holistic approach to addressing both the academic and non-academic needs of students. Site Coordinators use the CIS evidence-based Integrated Student Support Service Model to bring services to target groups of students and to the whole student body to create a school environment that is responsive and engaging. Working with school staff, CIS of Miami s Site Coordinators who are positioned directly in schools identify students in need of support, assess what resources they need, and then provide those resources through appropriate community partnerships. These resources include food, clothing, mentoring, counseling, tutoring, health care, and much more.
5 About Communities in Schools of Miami The following programs are the cornerstone of CIS of Miami: BRIDGES TO GRADUATIO N embeds CIS of Miami staff directly into middle and high schools to provide critical services to students who are at-risk of falling behind or dropping out. Services include tutoring, mentoring, job/ career readiness, case management, counseling, and leadership and life skills development. Six of the school sites include the national Diplomas N ow school transformation initiative. PARTN ERS FO R CO MMUN ITY SERVICES A placed-based service partnership with community agencies working together to provide care coordination services to children and youth residing in N orth Miami and N orth Miami Beach. Services provided by the collaborative address student attendance and behavior in school, child maltreatment, and family health access. This program includes an Alternative to Suspension Program. AMERICO RPS PRO GRAMS AmeriCorps members support three program initiatives as part of their oneyear service pledge to the community: Miami Reads!, school-based literacy tutoring for elementary school students; O ut-of-school Programs (Afterschool and Summer Camp) that offer homework help, tutoring, reading, computer labs, life skills, arts enrichment, and fitness programs at two sites in high-need neighborhoods; and AmeriCorps School Turnaround Program, a partnership with Miami-Dade County Public Schools where AmeriCorps members provide reading and math tutoring, mentoring, and wrap-around support services to five targeted elementary and middle schools. CH AMP (Community H elping Adolescents Mentor Program) Students are matched with workplace and school-based mentors. In the school-to-work mentor model, students are transported once a month to their mentors workplace to receive individual personal, academic, and career mentoring. GEAR UP, in partnership with Miami-Dade College, goal is to create early awareness of higher education and prepare students to graduate and go on to college. Services include but are not limited to tutoring, mentoring, and college immersion programs.
6 PRO GRAM IMPACT 15,151 students served through the evidence-based Integrated Student Support Services Model. 3,409 parents served. 26 schools and three community-based sites served. 97% of participating elementary and middle school students were promoted to the next grade. 79% of participating students tracked for attendance improved their attendance. 87% of students served for academic purposes improved their academic performance. 88% of students targeted for behavior interventions did not incur a repeat suspension. 88% of participating children receiving in-school tutoring improved their reading skills. 98% of participating children in out-of-school program improved their reading skills. 94% of mentored students improved their relationships with adults. 96% of participating students receiving mentoring demonstrated improved decision-making skills.
