2 American Democracy Project (ADP) The American Democracy Project is a multi-campus initiative that seeks to create an intellectual and experiential understanding of civic engagement for undergraduates enrolled at institutions that are members of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU). The goal of the project is to produce graduates who understand and are committed to engaging in meaningful actions as citizens in a democracy. Currently, there are 199 AASCU members participating in the project. Southern Consortium of the American Democracy Project (ADP-South) The Southern Consortium of the American Democracy Project is a multi-state initiative of southern region American Association of State Colleges and Universities institutions. The goal of the consortium is to support and celebrate civic engagement on member campuses. 8 FEATURED SPEAKERS Elisabeth Bumiller Elisabeth Bumiller was named a White House Correspondent for The New York Times in Prior to this, she was the City Hall Bureau Chief in New York City for The Times and, from 1995 until 1999, a reporter for the Metropolitan staff. Before joining The Times, Ms. Bumiller worked for The Washington Post as a correspondent in various cities around the world: in New York from January 1995 until June 1995; in Tokyo from 1990 until 1991; and New Delhi from 1985 until From 1979 until 1985 she was a reporter for the style section of The Post at its Washington, D.C. headquarters. Ms. Bumiller is the author of several books. In 1990, she published May You Be the Mother of A Hundred Sons: A Journey Among the Women of India (Random House). In 1995, she published The Secrets of Mariko: A Year in the Life of a Japanese Woman and Her Family (Times Books), and in 2001, she participated in the writing of For Women Only: A Revolutionary Guide to Overcoming Sexual Dysfunction and Reclaiming your Sex Life (Henry Holt). Ms. Bumiller received a B.S. in journalism from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University in 1977, and then went on to obtain her M.S. in journalism at Columbia University in Mallory Wall Mallory Wall is an active participant in higher education governance serving as the Student Government Association President at McNeese State University in Lake Charles and representing over 85,000 students as a board member for the University of System. In addition, Wall serves on the Student Financial Assistance Commission and is on the Executive Committee of the Council of Student Body Presidents, which represents all students in public postsecondary education. Besides her civic service, the senior mass communication major is also an active volunteer for the Children s Miracle Network, the American Heart Association, and Habitat for Humanity. 8 ADP-South First Annual Conference West
