3 Georgia and 2014 Technical Notes Georgia and is published annually and includes the average number of establishments, average employment, and average weekly wage during the calendar year. Data by month are available upon request. for membership organizations, private households, and agriculture, forestry and fishing is not all-inclusive. Many employers in these three categories are not covered by the Security Law and thus do not report data to the Georgia Department of Labor. Source The employment and wage information used in this publication is compiled from reports submitted by employers who are subject to Georgia s Security Law. Because the law specifically protects the confidentiality of individual employers, data are not disclosed in the following cases: There are fewer than three establishments in an industry group, and/or One establishment accounts for 80 percent or more of the employment within the group. Industry groups not meeting the criteria for disclosure are indicated by an asterisk (*). Geographic Coverage Data are prepared for the state, counties, and fifteen Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs). Data Definitions : The number of employees on payrolls of employers covered by the Security law during the pay period that includes the 12 th of the month. This includes full time, part time and temporary workers and both hourly-paid and salaried employees. Employees who were not on the payroll on the 12 th of the month will not be included. Establishment: Usually indicates a single physical business location. However, an employer operating two or more establishments in the same type of business in a county may be shown as one establishment. : The total dollars paid (including bonuses, incentive pay, etc.) to all employees (both hourly and salaried) during the year divided by the average number of employees. This figure is then divided by 52 weeks to obtain a weekly figure. Other Data Series For current estimates of employment by industry, please see Dimensions-Measuring Georgia s Workforce. This monthly publication covers the state and fourteen MSAs. Civilian Labor Force provides current estimates of the number of persons in the labor force, the number employed, the number unemployed and the unemployment rate. Published series include the state, MSAs and counties. Unpublished series include cities of 10,000 or more, congressional districts and Workforce Investment Act areas. These data are available upon request. Data contained in and and Dimensions are reported on the basis of the area in which the job is located. Civilian labor force data are based upon the area in which labor force participants reside. The series are not comparable. County Business Patterns, published by the U.S. Department of Commerce, may also be useful. 3
4 Georgia and 2014 NAICS The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) is the industry classification system used by the statistical agencies of the United States. NAICS replaced the 1987 Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) coding system in For more information and background on NAICS, please visit State Summary The tables contained in this report serve as a valuable source of employment information by industry for Georgia, its counties and its metropolitan areas. At the total level, the data comprise more than 98 percent of the state s nonagricultural wage and salary employment. Although the extent of coverage by the unemployment insurance program varies from area to area (see Technical Notes ), the information generally provides a fairly complete industry profile of employment in a given area. Comparisons over time can also lead to a better understanding of shifts which may be occurring in the local employment base. The following statewide profile (Figures 1 and 2) is drawn from the State Totals table on page 6. More detailed data for counties and metropolitan areas are provided in the remainder of the report.
