BLOOMING AND BOOMING Richardson Oilseed is responding to strong consumer demand for healthy canola oil by increasing processing capacity is shaping up to be an eventful year for the agriculture industry, with sweeping changes to the grain marketing system and restructuring of the country s largest grain companies. Richardson is also seeing momentous growth in our Richardson Oilseed divsion. Strong demand from domestic and international food markets, which is being driven by growing consumer interest in healthier food products and biodiesel mandates, are fuelling increased demand for canola oil, says Pat Van Osch, Vice President and General Manager of Richardson Oilseed. Canola is a Canadian success story and we are committed to continuing to increase our presence in the market to meet growing demand for Canadian canola products. The Canadian canola industry has responded to those demands, increasing capacity by more than 70 per cent in the last two years. Richardson s Yorkton, Saskatchewan canola processing plant opened in 2010, and has a current processing capacity of 2,400 tonnes per day, or 840,000 tonnes per year. It s already big, and it s going to get even bigger. We re expanding the Yorkton plant this year, says Van Osch. Canola growers are responding well to the increase in demand by seeding record acres of canola for the last five years. With strong origination capability through our Richardson Pioneer network, we are in an excellent position to increase processing capacity to keep up with increasing global demand for canola oil. With this new expansion, the Yorkton plant will have the capacity to process 3,000 tonnes of canola per day, and over one million tonnes per year. Construction will begin in the fall and is expected to be complete by late To complement the growing oilseed processing division, Richardson has undergone significant growth in the oilseed manufacturing business as well. A recently completed $15 million expansion to the Lethbridge, Alberta canola packaging facility will help the company to meet the increasing customer demand for healthier food products. Last fall s acquisition of a manufacturing plant in Mississauga, Ontario has made Richardson the only Canadian company with manufacturing plants in Eastern and Western Canada that produce both canola based margarine and shortening SEEDsource 5

WHEAT Trials show that both the Hard Red Spring and Hard White Spring wheat varieties deliver quality traits such as high-yield potential and a solid disease resistance package. It boasts a high-yield potential and provides solid disease resistance, including improved rating on Fusarium Head Blight, and gives growers the flexibility of using Group 1 or Group 2 herbicides for weed control. This high-yielding, high-quality variety gives growers a great overall disease package with flexible herbicide options that sets it apart, says Peter Entz, Richardson s Assistant Vice President, Seed and Traits. In addition, we continue to carry out research specifically with WR859 CL, which helps us to support our farm customers with tips on how to maximize their yield and quality. One of the real producer benefits of WR859 CL is that it facilitates easier thrashing than other varieties, says Gerald Bryson, Area Business Manager for Richardson Pioneer. It really allows producers to travel faster and get a clean sample. 12
WHEAT HARD WHITE SPRING WHEAT Hard White Spring wheat has been in high demand in the milling market in North America because white wheat products are visually appealing, but still have a good nutritional profile says Stephen Schroeder, Grain Merchant for Richardson International. Varieties like AC Snowstar really let millers cater to new consumer demands for healthier food products. The bran of AC Snowstar is whiter than a Hard Red Spring wheat, so millers can actually put more bran into their flour and produce whole wheat bread that looks like white bread. Besides its white flour colour, AC Snowstar also has better water absorption, shows good potential for improved dough strength, and is the highest yielding Hard White Spring variety. The latest variety development in this class is an improved variety called AC Whitehawk. New in 2013, AC Whitehawk is the grain industry s response to consumer demand for a higher-protein, high-yielding Hard White Spring wheat. Agronomically, we can say that AC Whitehawk is very similar to AC Snowstar, except that it has a higher protein rating, says Peter Entz, Assistant Vice President, Seed and Traits for Richardson. Based on some of our field observations, we ve learned that it stands well. After some heavy rains, it really showed itself. In the side-by-side trials, we found that AC Whitehawk has a slightly lower yield than AC Snowstar, but it really makes up for that in threshability, says Daryle Manning, Area Marketing Representative at Tri Lake Agri West in Killarney, Manitoba. Still in development trials, AC Whitehawk will have limited seed supply in 2013, and full commercial scale supply will be available in Hard White Spring varieties like AC Snowstar and AC Whitehawk are just the latest example of how long-term research in seed breeding and genetics is helping us to deliver more value to end-use customers and ultimately, quality to customers, says Schroeder. 14 WHEAT MICROESSENTIALS PROVIDE IMPROVED CROP NUTRITION Richardson Pioneer has partnered with Mosaic to distribute MES15 and MESZ, MicroEssentials products that mark a breakthrough in advanced crop nutrition. Specifically formulated for use on all crops, including canola, MES15 delivers nitrogen, phosphorus and sulfur in uniform granules, providing improved and consistent nutrition uptake. MESZ also contains zinc, a nutrient being recommended for cereal crops. Having all the nutrients in one granule means there are fewer products to be handled, says Steve Biggar, Richardson International s Assistant Vice-President, Fertilizer and Energy Products. Plus, they store better than typical blends containing sulfate fertilizer. They have less bulk and won t draw in moisture over the winter; they will flow and maintain their effectiveness in the spring. The patented formulation of each MES15 and MESZ granule ensures that crops get the balanced distribution of nutrients they need to reach their potential. MES15 delivers sulfur in two forms. Ammonium sulfate is delivered early in the season and elemental sulfur is available later when sulfur from other fertilizer formulations may run out, Biggar says. With MESZ, each granule contains nitrogen, sulfate and phosphorus plus zinc. That way, plants don t have to search out that zinc because it is delivered with the other nutrients. Unbelievable yields. While every farmer dreams of amazing yields, not all realize the fertilizer they use is responsible for up to 40 percent of yield. So it makes sense to use the most advanced fertilizer available. Choose MicroEssentials, with Fusion TM technology. Every granule offers perfect distribution of nutrients for uniform coverage, and improved nutrient uptake. For more information, visit MicroEssentials.com, or contact your Richardson Pioneer Ag Business Centre. Available at: 14 Rooted in science.
BARLEY WHEAT CANADIAN WESTERN AMBER DURUM SPOTLIGHT ON: AC ENTERPRISE An overall strong variety, with some distinct quality advantages, AC Enterprise is a good choice for farmers looking for a highly marketable durum variety. AC Enterprise is a new Canadian Western Amber Durum (CWAD) developed by Agriculture and AgriFood Canada s Swift Current breeding program, and marketed by CANTERRA SEEDS. It offers the complete package of yield, disease resistance and grain quality. AC Enterprise is an improvement over some of the other durum varieties being grown right now, says Peter Entz, Assistant Vice President, Seed and Traits for Richardson. Farmers and end users will see the quality advantage and improvement in yield and maturity rating. AC Enterprise has excellent test weight and grain protein, with low cadmium concentrations and good gluten index and semolina yield. AC Enterprise also has high pigment concentrations. We re currently doing some AC Enterprise testing with Cigi (Canadian International Grains Institute) and we are definitely seeing quality advantages, specifically in semolina colour, says Entz. For end-use customers making pastas and couscous that high pigment concentration good semolina colour is very important. AC Enterprise also has a very complete disease resistance package, including very good resistance to stem and leaf rust, fair resistance to bunt and leaf spots, and poor resistance to smut and fusarium head blight. Compared to other new durum varieties, AC Enterprise matures two days earlier. That means earlier harvest and better grade retention, while still often exceeding the yield potential of its later competitors. AC Enterprise appears to be easy to thresh, which means very good harvest performance with faster harvest speeds, a better sample and lower dockage. AC ENTERPRISE MATURITY: Similar to AC Strongfield HEIGHT: 2 cm taller than AC Strongfield YEILD: 102% of AC Strongfield LODGING RATING: Fair LEAF RUST RESISTANCE: Very good *Data from 2012 SaskSeed Guide 2013 SEEDsource 15
WHEAT Canadian Prairie Spring Red is experiencing a renaissance, thanks to new genetic developments offering improved agronomics. For several years, the class had been dominated by older products which were still performing well, but had stalled in terms of agronomic advancements. New genetics are offering improved agronomics, especially in disease reaction, and a renewed interest in CPSR varieties. There is a resurgence of interest and a renewed belief that the CPSR class might offer value to end users who are looking for mid-quality, high-yielding milling wheat. WHEAT RENAISSANCE: CANADIAN PRAIRIE SPRING RED 16
There are two new varieties entering the market right now: Syngenta s SY985 and CANTERRA s AC Conquer VB. When you bring new products to the market you want to make sure it s an improvement over what the growers are already growing today, says Peter Entz, Assistant Vice President, Seed and Traits for Richardson. SY985 is an improved CPSR variety in stem rust, loose smut and fusarium head blight resistance. Combine that with the fact that it s a short plant with high yield potential and we think it will bring real value to the market, value that farmers will appreciate. SY985 will be available at select Richardson Pioneer locations, but supplies are still building and will be limited for 2013 while it goes through field testing. Like all new varieties, we re anxious to see how SY985 performs in 2012 under real farm scale conditions, says Entz. The data that we rely on today is largely based on small plot experience, and although small plots provide a great starting point, they don t capture the full picture. Entz says that large-scale testing gives a better overall snapshot of a new variety than small plots, and uses WR859 CL as an example of that. We had no idea how significant the ease of harvesting was you just can t get a feel for that in small plots using small plot harvesting equipment, says Entz. But when farmers grew it, on a large scale, that attribute came out loud and clear. Entz says Richardson is looking forwarded to learning more about SY985 from the 2012 trials. It already looks promising, and we re going to continue to do our research so we can offer the best options to our customers. CANADA PRAIRIE SPRING SY985 is a new CPRS variety in a class that hasn t had a new variety for some time. High yield and exceptional quality will become the signature traits for SY985. 18 BARLEY The end user demand for barley is holding steady, and there are definitely market opportunities out there for producers, says Dale Matchett, Merchant, Malt and Barley for Richardson. We re well connected in the malting industry and we have a pretty diverse portfolio of customers. They re looking for different varieties with different traits, so there are market opportunities for just about everyone producing malting barley right now. MALTING BARLEY Richardson is currently participating in market development trials for SeCan barley superstars CDC Meredith and CDC Kindersley. The trials have found that CDC Meredith has improved fermentability in breweries and higher extract levels than a lot of other varieties, says Matchett about the outstanding, two-row malting barley that boasts top grain yield and reduced grain protein. Demand for CDC Meredith was higher in 2012 than the year before, and we re expecting that demand to hold steady in 2013 as well. We expanded the number of acres planted for CDC Kindersley in 2012, and had two end users test the malt barley in commercial scale trial runs. In 2013 we ll be looking to double the amount of acres seeded, says Matchett. CDC Kindersley has a couple of years of development trials to do before it s ready for full-scale commercial distribution. It s already garnered interest from malting companies, which is very encouraging. At Richardson Pioneer, we value our long-standing relationships with producers, and we re particularly proud of our full-service production contracts, which help to build confidence in our services and products.
