2 Introduction 1. The statistics presented here were reported by UNHCR Offices located in countries of asylum. In total, 92 UNHCR country offices reported refugee statistics during the first quarter of The statistics presented here should be considered as provisional, subject to change. Industrialized countries are not included in this survey. Main conclusions/observations 2. In the 92 asylum countries, the refugee population increased by 1%, from 4,680,000 as at 1 January 2002 to 4,721,000 as at 31 March The UNHCRassisted refugee population decreased with -1.1%. 3. Sixty countries hosted 1,000 or more refugees as at 31 March Of these 60 countries, eight experienced a change in the refugee population of 10% or more. Thus, in most asylum countries the refugee population remained quite stable during the period under review (see Table 1). 4. Six countries hosting at least 1,000 refugees recorded an increase in the refugee population of 10% or more. These include Sierra Leone (+171% due to an increase in Liberian refugees), Costa Rica (+21% due to an increase in Colombian refugees), South Africa (14% increase, mainly due to an increase in refugees from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Somalia and Angola), Egypt (+13%, mainly due to an increase in Sudanese refugees), Ecuador (+13% due to an increase in the number of Colombian refugees) and Lebanon (+11% due to new refugee arrivals from Iraq and Sudan) (see Table 1 and 2). 5. Two countries hosting at least 1,000 refugees recorded a decrease in the refugee population of at least 10%. In Croatia, the refugee figure fell by 40% due to deregistration because of prolonged non-renewal of identity cards by refugees, presumably as a result of spontaneous returns to Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo. The refugee population in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia recorded a 21% decrease, mostly due to a decrease in refugees from the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (see Table 1 and 2). 6. The largest number of refugee arrivals was reported by Sierra Leone, (9,930), the Republic of Tanzania (9,250), Zambia (6,100), Uganda (5,240) and Cote d Ivoire (4,560) (Table 3). 7. The largest number of voluntary repatriation departures were reported by the UNHCR country offices in Guinea (6,580) 1, Zambia (4,500), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (2,210), the Republic of Tanzania (1,480) and Bosnia and Herzegovina 1,070) (Table 4). 8. The main resettlement departures were reported by the UNHCR Offices in Turkey (580), Kenya (380), India (270), the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia 2 (160) and Jordan (130) (Table 5). 1 Sierra Leone reported 10,075 returns from Guinea. 2 In this note, the statistics reported by the UNHCR country office in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia exclude Kosovo.
