28 The Ongoing Saga of Urban Bigfoot ( ) is a series of photographbased works, telling the story of the character Urban Bigfoot. It isn t a story with a beginning and an end. The works can be viewed separately and in random order. Our hero wanders around the city (photographic material was gathered in cities around the Netherlands, Belgium and Great Britain) contemplating life in general and his own life in particular in a rather pompous and ambiguous way. His story, his image, develops in the fragments. Text plays an important role in these works. On the next pages a selection from the series. (Exists in dutch and english language versions.) The excessive infrastructure could not keep him from his target. The Ongoing Saga of Urban Bigfoot ( ) is een serie werken op basis van fotografie, die het verhaal van het personage Urban Bigfoot vertelt. Het is geen verhaal met een begin of een einde. De werken kunnen afzonderlijk en in willekeurige volgorde bekeken worden. Onze held dwaalt rond in de stad (fotografisch materiaal werd verzameld in steden in Nederland, België en GrootBrittannië) mijmerend over het leven in het algemeen en zijn eigen leven in het bijzonder, op enigszins zelfvoldane en dubbelzinnige wijze. Zijn verhaal, zijn beeld, wordt opgebouwd in fragmenten. Tekst speelt een belangrijke rol in deze werken. Op de volgende pagina s een selectie. 30 Hikikomori Days & Hikikomori Days Part 2 (Tokyo Yokoso) Hikikomori (lit. pulling away, being confined, i.e. acute social withdrawal ) is a Japanese term to refer to the phenomenon of reclusive individuals who have chosen to withdraw from social life. Hikikomori Days is a series of photographbased works, made during a reclusive period in Tilburg in 2009 ( Hikikomori Days : the b/w works on page 56 & 57, a selection), and during my visit to Tokyo in 2010 ( Hikikomori Days Part 2 (Tokyo Yokoso) : the coloured works on page 58 & 59, a selection). 37 the end of that, the beginning of this: 21st century Yokai Yokai are supernatural monsters and ghosts in Japanese folklore. Yokai can be malevolent and mischievous, but some of them bring good fortune. They can be animal or humanlike in appearance, shaped like inanimate objects or possess no physical shape whatsoever. (This project was initially a (sort of) commission for Gominekopress, Tokyo)

38 NagNagNag Is attracted by: excessive (EXCESSIVE) nagging. Attacks by: nagging even more than you, thus turning you and your surroundings all gooy. How to banish: will never disappear again. You started this, now live with it! Appearance: looks very similar to your computermonitor. Memimi Attacks when: the phrases I don t believe my eyes and I don t believe my ears are used all too frequently. Offensive weapon: never believes her eyes or ears. Will develop extra eyes and ears every time she doesn t believe them. Will disappear: will eventually be crushed by the weight of all those eyes and ears. Appearance: a little girl with an increasing amount of eyes and ears
