3 Are you running blind at your small sites? Do you have effective visibility of every single remote hut, collocation rack and enclosed cabinet in your network? If there s a problem at these small sites, can you diagnose it from your NOC... or do you have to dispatch a technician just to isolate the problem? If something went wrong at these small sites... like a power outage, a critically low battery, high temperature or flooding... will you be notified in time to correct it? Or will you find out about the problem only when the site s gone dark and there s already expensive equipment damage? Do you think you don t have the budget to monitor your small sites? Equipment damage and network outages happen at remote huts and collocation cages as well as central offices. And it s a lot harder (and a lot more expensive!) to drive out to an isolated remote hut to locate and repair problems. I know what you re going to say: Of course it would be nice to monitor every single site but I just don t have the budget for it. I ve got to prioritize, and frankly, the higher-ups don t think these small sites are important enough to justify installing RTUs. Small Remote Site Equipment Damage Temperature cial Power Think small site monitoring isn t worth the cost? The truth is, damage at small sites can be very expensive. OK, so that s what the higher-ups think but is it true? Fact: Small-site failures can cause bigtime costs If you re not monitoring your small sites, you re gambling you re making a bet that the damage caused by small-site failures will, on average, always be less than the cost of network monitoring. But think about can go wrong at your small remote sites and what those problems can cost. Power outages: Every site is vulnerable to power loss. You may have redundant backup systems, but if you don t know when they ve taken over, you won t know you need to intervene. And when the last backup system fails, it will be too late to prevent costly equipment damage. High temperature: Cooling systems and their power supplies also fail, creating more equipment damage and repair costs. Water damage: Rainstorms and floods can punch through your site structures. If you don t find out about rising water, it can short out every piece of equipment at the site. Backup equipment failures: Here s an all-too-common scenario: The primary unit goes down, and the secondary unit takes over... and no one knows about it. Weeks, perhaps even months pass these problems can have very long fuses. Then the backup unit fails, and the site goes dark. What do all these site failures have in common? They re all preventable, IF you have advanced warning of the problem. But failures like these happen all the time. And the damage they cause is a lot more expensive than the cost of an RTU. How many failures have you had, this year alone, at your small remote sites? How much are small site failures costing you? DPS Telecom (800) [email protected] Page 3 of 4
4 OK, already! I know it would be great if I could monitor my small sites but what about the cost? Good point. Given what the suits like to call today s budgetary realities, just because you need RTUs at your small sites doesn t mean you ll get the authorization to actually buy any. But think hard about the assumptions that are keeping you from monitoring your small sites.don t let a faulty cost-benefit analysis expose your network to preventable threats. What are the perceived cost barriers to monitoring small sites? Equipment costs: Conventional wisdom says that remote alarm monitoring always requires a large, expensive, high-capacity RTU. Installation costs: Conventional wisdom says that installing an RTU takes hours of technician labor for wiring, turn-up and testing at the remote site plus more hours of configuration work at the master station. Transport costs: Conventional wisdom says transporting alarm data means recurring monthly costs for phone lines, cell transceivers or dedicated circuits. But are you really limited by these preconceived cost barriers? And if you re not, why shouldn t you monitor every site in your network? T/Mon NOC Telnet Reach Through LAN Traps to 1 2 SNMP managers TL1 Autonomous Messages 16 Discrete Alarms 2 Analog Inputs 2 Controls 1 Terminal Server Port The NetGuardian 216 monitors exactly enough to monitor your small sites without expensive extras and reports to up to 2 SNMP managers and T/Mon NOC. Introducing the NetGuardian 216: so cost-effective, you can monitor every site in your network The NetGuardian 216 remote telemetry unit is a cost-effective solution for monitoring your small sites. The NG 216 tears down the cost barriers to small site monitoring, making it economically possible to monitor every site in your network: Cost-effective capacity: With 16 discrete alarms, 2 analogs, 2 control relays and 1 serial reachthrough port, the NetGuardian 216 is just right for managing small sites. Easy installation: With a small physical footprint, connectorized inputs, and LAN/WAN network connection, the NetGuardian 216 is quick and simple to install. Easy SNMP integration: The NetGuardian 216 transmits a unique fail and clear trap ID for each alarm point. You don t have to parse traps to get meaningful alarms, saving you hours of work. (The NG 216 trap does include variable bindings with detailed information: point description, site ID, date/time stamp, and more.) Cost-effective LAN/WAN transport: Bring back alarms on your existing network infrastructure and eliminate the costs of dedicated circuits. DPS Telecom (800) [email protected] Page 4 of 7
5 Right-size alarm capacity With the NetGuardian 216 you don t spend too much for more alarms than you need. The NG 216 is just right for small site monitoring, enough monitor switch equipment, power supplies, battery voltage levels, and ambient room temperature, plus control generator starters or door locks. The NetGuardian 216 is also a highly effective unit for monitoring collocation site enclosures, giving you a reasonably-priced means of monitoring your equipment independently. The NetGuardian 216 s included Windows configuration utility makes setup a breeze and you can use the same software for test monitoring, traffic analysis and firmware uploading. Easy installation anywhere in your network The NetGuardian 216 is easy to install and configure, making it simple to add network monitoring capability anywhere in your network: LAN/WAN connectivity: The NetGuardian 216 s plug-and-play installation puts alarm visibility anywhere your LAN goes. Included Windows configuration software: Turning up the NetGuardian 216 is simple, quick, and LAN-capable you can configure every NG 216 unit in your network without leaving your desk. Use the same utility for monitoring, communication diagnostics, and loading new firmware. Dual 48 VDC power inputs or optional 110 VAC: The NetGuardian 216 is equally suited for telco equipment rooms or ordinary offices. Your choice of small-footprint form factors: Is your small site short on space? The rack-mount NG 216 is 1 RU x 8"W x 6"D if your monitoring needs grow, mount two NG 216 units side by side. And at sites where space is really at a premium, install the wall- mount NG 216 wherever you need alarm monitoring. DPS Telecom (800) [email protected] Page 5 of 7
6 Is space at a premium at your remote site? Save rack space for revenue-generating equipment with the wall-mount NetGuardian 216 Standard LAN/WAN connectivity for cost-effective transport The NG 216 s standard LAN/WAN connectivity produces several cost advantages over traditional transport: Use your existing LAN/WAN infrastructure No recurring monthly costs for a phone line or cell transceiver. Don t carve up revenue-generating bandwidth for a dedicated circuit. Get more bandwidth with LAN than you would with traditional transport. Monitor small sites without compromises Light capacity doesn t mean light on features or on quality. The NetGuardian 216 is a scaled-down version of the popular NetGuardian 832A, and includes features you usually find only on complex, high capacity remotes. Support for SNMP, TL1 and T/Mon: The NG 216 reports to any SNMP manager or TL1 master, and the T/Mon NOC Remote Alarm Monitoring System. Report to 2 SNMP mangers: The NG 216 can report to two different SNMP managers at different IP addresses a great feature if you need to send alarms to different departments. Mini-terminal server: The NetGuardian 216 acts as a one-port terminal server, giving you convenient LAN access to a switch, router, PBX, or other equipment. Four-threshold analog monitoring: The NetGuardian 216 s analog inputs feature four separate thresholds for each analog channel (major over, minor over, minor under, and major under), giving you the best visibility of battery levels, temperature, humidity, and other variables. Real-time clock: The NetGuardian 216 s internal clock ensures accurate date/time stamping of alarms and SNMP traps. Downloadable firmware updates: Your NetGuardian 216 will always have the latest features and improvements. When new firmware is available, you can download it from the DPS website free.
