STEM Skills for All: Designing Data Science Programs through Business and Higher Education Collaboration SENCER 2015 Summer Institute Worcester Polytechnic Institute 2015 BHEF
Overview The session will explore how: BHEF has attempted to address demand for skills in emerging fields through collaboration BHEF s work in the application of emerging fields in undergraduate STEM education has produced both the scientist and the enabled graduate Implications for liberal arts and workreadiness 2015 BHEF 2
BHEF Summary The Business Higher Education Forum (BHEF) is a membership organization of Fortune 500 CEOs, college and university presidents, and other leaders who collaborate to promote innovation and enhance U.S. global competitiveness. BHEF Mission BHEF members collaborate to increase baccalaureate attainment and improve alignment between higher education and the workforce by creating undergraduate pathways to produce a diverse, highly skilled talent pool to meet demand in emerging fields. BHEF convenes business and academic leaders, and promotes effective undergraduate program design and development to create workforce solutions, and scaling guidance to increase the impact on baccalaureate outcomes. BHEF facilitates peer to peer engagement by its members and inspires peer leaders to act. Shape the National Agenda for Business & Education Collaboration through Convenings Through member meetings and convenings, BHEF members influence the national agenda on higher education and workforce. BHEF educates and fosters dialogue through access to its networks and peer to peer learning convenings. BHEF partners with industry associations to advance BHEF s sector scaling strategy. Influence Practice & Policy through Research & Thought Leadership BHEF promotes innovative higher education solutions and analyzes workforce needs and trends to inform policy and practice. BHEF builds evidence through research and tools such as the BHEF U.S. STEM Undergraduate Model. BHEF advances policy on behalf of its members through thought leadership that influences national dialogue and public policy. Address Workforce Needs through Programmatic Initiatives BHEF s National Higher Education and Workforce Initiative (HEWI) promotes strategic business higher education partnerships to advance projects that address regional workforce needs in emerging fields that drive innovation. On the national level, BHEF disseminates the learnings from its regional workforce projects and supports the scaling of effective practices through field and sector networks BHEF 3
BHEF s work is rooted in a deep, evidence based understanding of the education & workforce challenges facing this country 2015 BHEF 4
STEM Skills in the 21 st Century Workplace BHEF member and staff have documented that demand for STEM skills, e.g., data science and analytics skills extends well beyond STEM fields. Organizations in every sector have become data intensive enterprises using data to innovate and unlock value, requiring new skills from all employees 2015 BHEF 5
How we think about data and the tools and talent to drive innovation and value in data intensive enterprises Government E commerce BIG DATA Social media Internet of things Policy issues and privacy Data science Cyber Digital technologies 2015 BHEF 6
BHEF s deep analysis forms foundation for a sustained partnership BHEF partners with academic and business members and utilizes a rigorous methodology to assess workforce needs, identify curricular gaps and co design programs and courses Components of BHEF s assessment and design methodology include: Workforce Analysis Market Analysis/Peer Review Skills and Competency Mapping Gap Analysis of Existing Programs/Courses Co design of Programs/Courses Generate Student Interest and Opportunities for Internships Create feedback loop among deans, faculty and partners 2015 BHEF 7
Overview Of the job market sectors analyzed, demand is greatest for Data Analytics followed by Risk Management for the Financial Services sector in the New York MSA*. Cybersecurity jobs are hardest to fill (i.e. postings remain open longest), followed by Social and Mobile Technologies. Approximately half of job postings in each sector require a bachelor s degree. *See Methodology section for detailed definitions of target geography and industry sector for this report 2015 BHEF 8
Data Science Peer Review : Conclusions BHEF s analysis of 24 peer R 1 universities in 2013 suggested that undergraduates were unlikely to be exposed to data science at any of these universities Nearly all data science education is targeting the graduate level o Undergraduate education targets upper level students Most data science courses are located within the Computer Science Department o Other common choices include Information Science; Computer Science & Engineering; Bioinformatics; School of Business Courses and curricula vary significantly across institutions o Data science programs support research interests/strengths of university No clear common understanding of a data science training/education at the undergraduate or graduate level o At graduate level, training/education is highly field specific 2015 BHEF 9

Scaling Applied Learning Experiences Through Data Science Research BHEF and 4 Campus partners have submitted a proposal to the Department of Education s First in the World (FITW) program to develop a nationally recognized introductory data science course coupled with an industry-engaged course-based undergraduate research experience (icure). Through the proposed icure, traditional barriers to widely offering applied learning experiences to all students are eliminated. Introductory Course Applied Research Course Co-developed with business Commonly agreed upon topics such as: o Data management and integration o Data modeling o Data security/ governance o Business operations o Data visualization o Data mining o Data warehousing Project-based case studies tied to each topic Published and made widely available for free Considered industry standard and recognized in hiring process Common agreed upon guidelines developed for offering authentic research experience to teams of students Course-based experience facilitates participation by underserved populations who have obligations outside of school Through the topic of data science, dedicated laboratory needs will be limited Research topics across disciplines promotes collaboration across departments, a continued supply of cutting-edge projects, and a diversity of business partners icure builds upon best-practice programs proven to increase student persistence and completion 2015 BHEF 13
In assisting members to design new undergraduate experiences, BHEF has explored the implications for the liberal arts and a new definition of the: Work Ready Graduate 2015 BHEF 14
