1 2015 Career and Education Day February 14, 2015 George R. Brown Convention Center Impact Results The support you have offered has allowed us to help over 12,000 middle and high school students, teachers, counselors, principals and guardians during the 29 th Annual Career and Education Day (CED), the annual free event hosted by the Houston Hispanic Forum (HHF) that focuses on bridging the gap between students and post high school opportunities. This year, students and families visited over 110 exhibitors (from colleges, universities, trade schools, nonprofits, government agencies and corporations), and we offered over 52 career panels. These panels were refreshed by combining some sessions and eliminating others that were no longer relevant. CED encompassed the entire 3 rd floor of the George R. Brown Convention Center (GRB). Other aspects of the event included - Opening ceremony, free childcare, VIP/hospitality room, security, first-aid, free lunch, tax preparations, help with Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) completion and college admission assistance. All executed by over 1,200 volunteers from corporations, nonprofits, government agencies, and wonderful individuals. New for 2015 We began the new improvements to the February 14, 2015 CED by bringing together leading experts in the area of college and career readiness, and created an Advisory Committee (attached is a list of members). This group helped us build the infrastructure of CED to make it more relevant and impactful for the participants. With the group s help, we made the following changes to the event: Registration Process For the first time we asked all participants to register online before the event. We used Eventbrite to pre-register about 50% of the participants and the rest registered onsite. The new registration system allowed us to capture information that will be useful in planning future events and reporting to stakeholders. Also, the registration system will allow us to continue conversing with the 2015 CED Impact Report pg. 1
2 students throughout their pre-college days about upcoming events, summer camps, educational programs, internships, scholarships, FAFSA deadlines and more. App We contracted with DoubleDutch to take us to the modern age with an interactive App, CED Houston. The App replaced the printed program books that we ve had in the past, but more importantly it allowed us to interact personally with the participants via social media, collect much needed data to report to our stakeholders and to help plan future events. Career Panels CED s panels where organized according to the state mandated House Bill 5 (HB5) Endorsements (career tracks) which took effect during the fall of 2014 for all incoming 9 th graders. CED s new layout and signage allowed students, families, and caretakers to see first-hand the kind of jobs one can obtain when he or she follows a certain Endorsement. Endless career choices can be overwhelming and we were able to better direct the students based on his or her interests. Parent Track We received a $5,000 grant from the National College Access Network s (NCAN) Together We Succeed Grant to hire FACE Specialists (Family and Community Engagement), experts on family engagement, to create and execute this new track. They empowered parents with great information about post-high school education, including models of success, Education House Bill 5, College 101, Career Trends and Family Communications. We averaged about 50 parents per session and most parents attended all of the sessions. The Spanish sessions were more popular than the English sessions, with Family Communications being the most well attended session. Booth Registration and Enhancements We simplified, streamlined the process, and reduced paperwork by allowing exhibitors to reserve and/or pay for their booths online. Also, for their convenience they were able to access the GRB subcontractors directly to order electricity, extra tables, stanchions, etc. Media Committee - Led by Rosa Serrano of Freed Advertising, the committee was made up of top experts from several media companies/agencies including TV, radio, print and social media. The powerhouse committee helped us produce and secure testimonials, billboards, interviews, public service announcements (PSAs), social media and promotional spots. The engaged in-kind media companies were as follows: CBS, Hot 95.7 FM, Mega 101 FM, Mi Familia Magazine, Mix 96.5 FM, Multimedios Houston TV, OUTFRONT Media, SportsRadio 610, Telemundo Houston TV, Univision 45 Houston and The Bull. Some of our media partners and media committee members were also able to participate in panels as well as have booths set up on the day of the event; and provided some of the giveaways such as $1,000 in Ashley Furniture gift certificates and more. Middle School Program Presenting Your Best Career Selfie was led by The Workforce Solutions Regional Team and HISD Career Readiness. The middle school students learned how social media can impact 2015 CED Impact Report pg. 2
3 their future career/interview, what not to wear to an interview, and about the latest interview skills that will land them the perfect job. Counselor Track 8 Components of Effective College and Career Readiness Counseling was led by Jennifer Ertel, College Readiness Specialist, HISD and Jill Schott, Director of K12 State, District Partnership, The College Board. Thirty-five counselors explored the topic of how to create and sustain a college bound culture. Counselors received ready to use resources for college and career planning and learned how to build a comprehensive foundation for highly qualified college applicants. Admissions and Financial Plaza Was led by Mark Cueva, Division Manager of Education for the City of Houston. Students and parents/guardians stopped by to learn about college financing, received assistance with completing their income taxes and completing the online FAFSA form. The participants also received help completing the Apply Texas Application, and learned more about how to register for their college of choice. Signage We completely revamped the signage at the event with the addition of color coding for each Endorsement to make it easier to find career panels of interests. Lunch Due to the fantastic entertainment we ve had in the Ballroom, students would park themselves in the lunchroom longer than the time needed to eat their lunch. This year we made the room smaller by moving the distribution of the lunches from the foyer area to inside the Ballroom to keep the crowds moving. Jeff Davis Alumni Association did an excellent job of organizing the distribution of lunches to the attendees. Pocket Program Since we moved the program book online with the use of the new App, we also created a printed pocket program for people who didn t have a smart phone. The pocket programs were located at the registration area, information booth, Admissions and Financial Plaza and throughout the event space. Posters and Flyers To help bolster awareness among middle and high school students, we secured a grant from NCAN to print CED flyers and posters in Spanish, English and Vietnamese (posters were only in English). A hundred flyers and four posters were delivered to each Houston ISD school. As well as several schools in the following districts received various numbers of flyers and posters: Aldine ISD, Alief ISD, Alvin ISD, Beaumont ISD, Fort Bend ISD, Klein ISD, Lamar Consolidated ISD, Pearland ISD, Pasadena ISD, Spring Branch ISD, Waller ISD, several charter schools and others upon request. A total of 13,000 English flyers; 5,000 Spanish flyers; 1,000 Vietnamese flyers and 1,000 English posters were distributed. Scholarships for Buses Schools repeatedly tell us that transportation is a barrier to attending CED. With the help of the National College Access Network (NCAN), we were able to match HISD s $5,000 donation and secure transportation for an additional 600 students CED Impact Report pg. 3

9 We received letters of endorsement from Mayor Annise Parker, County Judge Ed Emmett and the Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. About the Houston Hispanic Forum Vision All Hispanics will possess the knowledge and tools to be successful. Mission Empower and inspire the success of the large and fast growing Hispanic community in the Greater Houston area, thereby strengthening the entire community. For 30 years, HHF has been a leading advocate focusing on education as a conduit to success in the Hispanic community. HHF is expanding its focus in the Hispanic community to include education, financial literacy, health issues and civic engagement. HHF s work is vital as Hispanics represent 41% of Harris County s population, the largest and fastest growing of any ethnic group in the region. Half of those living in poverty in Harris County are Hispanic. HHF promotes education and career attainment, financial literacy, optimum health, and civic engagement to ensure success in the Hispanic community for the greater good. About Career and Education Day CED is a day-long event held at the George R. Brown Convention Center in which approximately 12,000 participants from over 58 school districts attended this year gaining the ability to dream of rewarding career possibilities. CED established interest in post high school education among the participants by bringing universities, junior colleges, vocational schools, corporations, high school educators, parents/guardians, and students together to encourage and facilitate education beyond a high school diploma. The event consists of two major functions the career panels and the exhibit hall. This year our career explorers enjoyed over 52 career panels ranging from accountants to journalists and cosmetologists to rocket scientists, and around 110 exhibitors encompassing the entire 3 rd floor of the George R. Brown Convention Center. A third function equally important, consists of the Admission and Financial Plaza, where students completed their FAFSA onsite and received information about going to college. New for the 2015 CED, attendees participated in the Parent Track, the Counselor Program, the Middle School Program, and enjoyed free lunch and childcare. Together we play a large role in helping our future leaders make wise choices after high school and prepare them to become productive employees, knowledgeable customers, and responsible citizens. Thank you for your participation in the 2015 Career and Education Day CED Impact Report pg. 9
