3 ...to your future The PhD in Business Administration aims to promote advanced research in Business Administration as well as preparing students to respond to the social and economic challenges faced by organizations both at national and international levels. This PhD programme has been offered for more than two decades and contributes to the reputation of the postgraduate education of the University of Minho and the School of Economics and Management. The programme relies on highly qualified faculty, who hold doctoral degrees awarded by prestigious European and American Universities, and whose research quality is reflected in an increasing number of publications in reputed international scientific journals. work component of two semesters, and a PhD thesis that should be completed in four semesters. 7 programme objectives The overall objectives of the PhD programme in Business Administration are to: e) Promote the diffusion of scientific knowledge both within the academic community and to society at large; a) Promote advanced research in Business Administration; b) Develop the independent learning capacity skills that are required for accomplishing original scientific research in Business Administration; f) Have an active role in preparing students to respond to the social and economic challenges faced by organizations both at national and international levels. 7 c) Provide compulsory and elective courses designed to develop high quality research-active skills; d) Contribute to the discussion on the latest thinking and research in key areas of Business Administration and its interactions with other areas of knowledge; PhD Guide

8 The PhD programme in Business Administration is organized in three types of course units: 1. Two compulsory course units, offered in the first semester of the first year, covering the foundations of management theory; and the Project course unit in the second semester that enables students to specialize and progress to the thesis 2. Part II: Theory of Knowledge in Management 1. Examine the meanings of management and critically analyse claims, reasons, assumptions, and evidence in the management rhetorical process. 2. Assess conventional and non-conventional management knowledge production processes. 3. Formulate new theoretical lines of enquire in management research. 4. 11 COURSE UNIT: SEMINAR Semester: 1 st ECTS: 10 Tipology: Compulsory Syllabus: This curricular unit includes seminars on research and methodology to develop research and presentation skills as well as critical analysis of scientific work in the different management areas. Students may also participate in workshop, presented by professors from the University of Minho or other institutions, on specific advanced topics in management that fit their needs and interests. This year the seminar course will start with sessions on Organization and Business Policies then followed by Accounting, Finance, Applied Quantitative Methods and Marketing and Strategic Management. Students have to attend the seminars in all the areas. Learning Outcomes: 1. To identify, distinguish, discuss and fundament different methodologies and theoretical models of advanced topics in Management. 2. To develop research skills and critical analysis about different topics in Management. 3. To present, interpret, and discuss scientific papers. 4. 12 12 COURSE UNIT: PROJECT Semester: 2 nd ECTS: 18 Tipology: Compulsory Syllabus: In this research unit, students are asked to prepare a dissertation proposal that will be presented and defended at the end of the first year of the PhD program. Learning Outcomes: 1. To identify and fundament novel research ideas on a specific topic in Management Sciences. 2. To compare, criticise, and distinguish different trends and theories on an advanced topic in Management Sciences. 3. To compare, criticise, and distinguish different methodologies oriented to the research topic being studied. 4. 15 THESIS PROPOSAL AND DEFENSE The project shall be coordinated by the Director of the programme. In the Project course (2nd semester of 1st year) students are asked to produce a thesis proposal in one of the management areas offered in the PhD in Business Administration (Accounting, Finance, Marketing and Strategic Management, Organization and Business Policies and Quantitative Methods) or in a topic that explore and stimulate interdisciplinary research among several of these business management areas. At the beginning of the 2nd semester each student has to contact possible supervisors and develop a thesis proposal under his (or their) supervision. Reading and being aware of the faculty research publications will give you an idea of who is the most suitable faculty member to work with given your interests. The thesis proposal has to be submitted, presented and approved by a faculty committee by the end of the first year. The written proposal should present and discuss the research problem, the methodology, data sources and expected results. 15 The proposal may be written in English or in Portuguese. The deadline to submit the written proposal is 15th September The presentation and discussion will be schedule within one month after the submission of the proposal. The oral presentation must not exceed 20 minutes. The presentation is followed by a discussion of also 20 minutes, maximum. The faculty committee may approve the Thesis proposal, suggest changes or reject it, inviting the student to revise and resubmit it. PhD Guide

23 ...helping you steer in the right direction The PhD thesis is to be supervised by a professor of the Management Department, EEG-UM. In duly justified cases, two co-supervisors may be admitted, but one of the co-supervisors must be a member of faculty (holding a PhD degree) at the Management Department, EEG-UM. the Scientific Board of the programme approving the thesis proposal and a statement of the supervisor confirming that he/she accepts to supervise the thesis. Once the supervisor has been appointed, the student must register the subject of the thesis, as well as the thesis provisional plan. 23 Within 30 days of completing all first year course units, the student must submit her/his thesis proposal to the Scientific Committee of the School for approval. This application must be accompanied by a formal statement issued by PhD Guide

25 ...almost there. The thesis can be written in English or in Portuguese. The PhD thesis must be presented in accordance with the legislation and regulation in the University of Minho. All PhD thesis undergo a final formal examination in which the student has the opportunity to discuss and defend the dissertation before a committee of faculty considered experts in the student s field of research. 29 EEG Research Day PhD students (particularly in their third year) are encouraged to present their research progress in the School s Research Day that takes place in March each year. This event seeks to promote the research projects of the School s Master and PhD students and constitutes an excellent opportunity to present preliminary work to an audience of other PhD students and faculty members. 29 PhD Guide

30 Language of Instruction The language of instruction is English. - The coordination of research activities in order to foster interdisciplinary research initiatives and to apply for external funding of infrastructure of large interdisciplinary programs, 30 E-learning Platform At the University of Minho students will have access to the e-learning platform Blackboard. The access is made via the website with the necessary credentials, i.e., the student number and password of the University of Minho. This e-learning platform is an important information repository and communication tool with students, who will find there details about the programme and course units. Access is allowed only to the course units in which the student is registered. - The institutional representation of the EEG-UM research units, - Databases management. In GAI s website students may find all the scientific publications produced by the school s researchers as well as have access to all the databases available eeg.uminho.pt/default.aspx?tabindex=4&tabid=15&pageid=41&lang=en-us. The EEG also provides its students with a computation server with Eviews, Gretl, Mathematica, Ox, R, SPSS and Stata. It is a remote access server, which also enables access to some of the data sets available for research. Libraries, Databases and Software Students have access to the libraries, software and databases subscribed by the University and EEG-UM. At EEG, the Research Support Office (GAI) is the umbrella for all the school s research units. The University Library provides excellent access to bibliographic databases and data, as well as to books adopted as bibliography for the different course units. The library also provides individual and group study rooms. 31 Study Rooms and Computer Labs PhD students have a room at EEG, room 2.41 (sala de Doutorandos), working hours from am to 10:00 pm. Please ask for the key in GAI s office. Students also have access to three computer labs, all of them equipped with computers with diverse software (lab 0.19, lab 2.30 and lab 2.39/GAI). This award is attributed annually conditional on financial resources. The Scientific Board of the programme will also endeavour to support the participation of students developing their thesis in international conferences, depending on financial constraints. at least 4 nationalities attend the programme. Students are encouraged to study at least one semester in a foreign University. EEG holds student exchange agreements with several foreign institutions.
