1 Repor from ISO TC46 Informaion and documenaion annual meeing Berlin, May 5 nd 8 h 2012 TC46 on Informaion and documenaion has been leading effors relaed o informaion managemen since Sandards developed under ISO/ faciliae access o knowledge and informaion and sandardize auomaed ools, compuer sysems, and services relaing o is major sakeholders of: libraries, publishing, documenaion and informaion cenres, archives, records managemen, museums, indexing and absracing services, and informaion echnology suppliers o hese communiies. TC46 has a unique role among ISO informaion relaed commiees in ha i focuses on he whole lifecycle of informaion from is creaion and idenificaion, hrough delivery, managemen, measuremen, and archiving, o final disposiion. Annual meeing The following repor summarizes he key opics emerged during he week in Berlin wih paricular regards o he discussions held in he meeings of SC4, S8 SC9 1 and plenary TC46 of probable ineres o he IFLA communiy. [For he lis of published sandards, cfr. Appendix A] 1. Sandardizaion of epub 3.0 SC4 has esablished a working group o profile epub version 3.0, especially keeping in mind he concerns of long erm preservaion. The SC4 chair will conac he IDPF 2 execuive direcor, Bill McCoy, for discussions. acknowledges he need o sandardize he epub version 3.0 as developed by IDPF; furher recognizes he need of he Informaion and documenaion communiy o develop ISO documens referring o a sandardized epub version 3.0. herefore expresses readiness o lead a fas rack accepance of he epub version 3.0, pending agreemen from IDPF. Poenial offers from oher Inernaional (ISO, IEC) sandardizaion groups o coordinae in order o aain he goal of an expediious sandardizaion of epub version 3.0 will be considered wih high ineres. 1 ISO Subcommiees: /SC 4 Technical ineroperabiliy; /SC 8 Qualiy Saisics and performance evaluaion; /SC 9 Idenificaion and descripion. 2 Inernaional Digial Publishing Forum The key IDPF sandard is epub. epub is a disribuion and inerchange forma sandard for digial publicaions and documens. I defines a means of represening, packaging and encoding srucured and semanically enhanced Web conen for disribuion in a singlefile forma. 1

Revision of ISO 25577: MarcXChange SC4 approves he revision for ISO This sandard describes a generalized MARCXML schema ha is useable for all records using he ISO 2709 synax wihou changing he srucure and wih as few changes as possible o he original schema. This schema provides a specificaion for he developmen of local simple schemas, ensuring compaibiliy. The main purpose is o include embedded fields, which is a specific reques from users of UNIMARC. SC4 acknowledges an ad hoc group has me and considered a draf amendmen o ISO prepared by Danish Sandards and recommends member bodies consider adoping he compleed draf for submission as a DIS (Draf Inernaional Sandard). The balloing of his draf will be closed on January ISO 28560: RFID in libraries: new work iems SC4 approves o iniiae a ballo for wo new echnical specificaions: 1. Rules for ISO daa elemens o be encoded in radio frequency idenificaion (RFID) ags wih a memory srucure ha is pariioned ino four memory banks (e.g. ISO/IEC Type C operaing in he UHF frequency, bu no necessarily resriced o his echnology) (Proposer: Unied Kingdom); 2. Encoding mehod used o form he unique iem idenifier (UII) of RFID ag where a ag suppors differen memory areas for he UII and oher Iem relaed daa (e.g. ISO/IEC ype C, ype D and ISO/IEC MODE 3), and when he UII is assigned for a library applicaion (Proposer: Japan). 4. SC4 on ILL The Inerlibrary Loan (ILL) Applicaion Proocol was devised o allow he auomaic exchange of ILL requess and responses from sysem o sysem. In creaing he sandards, he library communiy and he vendors ha serve his communiy agreed on a common srucure for ILL reques ransacions. The sandards describe each ype of message ha may be involved in he ILL reques process; he daa ha may be included in each message; he sequence in which he messages may be received; and he synax of he messages. These sandards enabled ILL o ake advanage of he elecronic communicaions mehods available a he ime of heir developmen and hereby o become a highly efficien process. They also allowed a variey of sofware vendors o develop sysems wih he promise ha heir cliens would be able o communicae wih oher insiuions. SC4 asks ILL/Mainenance Agency o review ISO and o address known defecs and propose a revision before he end of Augus SC4 invies Danish Sandards o prepare a new work iem in cooperaion wih oher ineresed paries, for a new ILL sandard before he end of Ocober SC4 asks he chair of SC4 o esablish a WG o develop a new ILL sandard, if NWIP is approved. 2

3 SC4 asks he chair o convene a group of expers in resource sharing o develop a road map for conen delivery in general, of which ILL is a par. 5. ISO 639 Codes for he represenaion of names of languages SC4 noes wih concern he acions of ISO/TC 37/SC 2 o revise he family of ISO 639 sandards. As ISO 639 is a join projec wih, SC4 would like o highligh he sabiliy of he muli par sandard and is preference ha i no be impaced by he planned merger ino a single sandard. SC4 secrearia will conac TC37/SC 2 o discuss a posiive soluion in his work. shares he concern of SC 4 abou a revision of he ISO 639 sandards series as his was unilaerally decided by TC 37/SC 2. Governance of he ISO 639 sandards series is shared beween TC 37/SC 2 and SC 4 in accordance wih ISO suppors SC 4 in is endeavors o find a soluion o his siuaion. 6. Suppor on he work of NISO SC4 suppors he work of NISO o organize a meeing of meadaa communiies and encourages NISO o repor he oucomes of is work o SC4 o serve as a possible basis for fuure SC4 sandards work. 7. DCMI 3 / SC4 SC4 invies DCMI, as a caegory A Liaison 4, o consider proposing DCMI sandards as ISO sandards. 8. Imminen publicaion of sandards (under he responsibiliy of SC9, see appendix I) ISO (DOI) This approved sandard, has been a US Naional sandard for years and a de faco sandard since 2000 ha provides persisen idenificaion for e conen, including e books. ISO (ISCI). This approved sandard, specifies an idenifier as a unique inernaional idenificaion sysem for each collecion and fond. ISO (ISNI). This approved sandard, specifies an idenifier for public ideniies of paries involved hroughou he media conen indusries in he creaion, producion, managemen, and conen disribuion chains. 9.
