6 Notes Table Use this section to record details of all of the books you have read together or the reading activities undertaken Date Title of book or reading activity Pupil s Comments Start with the title, chapter heading or picture on the front cover. Ask the pupil what it makes them think of. Collect their ideas orally, using drawings or by making brief notes. Compile a list of questions to ask the character in an interview. You could then take it in turns to act as the character! Draw characters from the text surrounding the drawing with phrases from the text that relate to the character (including emotions). Read a variety of texts. For example, try instruction texts such as creating origami Draw a strip cartoon or story board that identifies four or five main points from a story or information text.
7 Reading Ideas & Activities Take a topic or theme from the story (e.g. animals). Take it in turns to write down a word associated with the topic in alphabetical order, e.g. antelope, bat, camel etc. dog etc. Partner s Comments Teacher s Comments If struggling with a particular work, look up it s meaning in a dictionary and try to use it in a sentence. Write out a sentence from a story on a strip of card using lower case letters. Cut it up and re-assemble it. Have fun changing words round to make silly sentences. Share stories of interest. Bring in stories, magazines etc. from home. After reading, draw a map of events in a story together by asking the pupil to recall and retell the story.
