1 Visual Identity Standards 16.0 Vehicles Information and inquiries: University Relations
Visual Identity Standards Vehicles Introduction Simple logo placement on standard fleet vehicles Examples Campus security vehicles Promotional wraps Introduction There are three common types of graphic application related to campus vehicles at the University of Calgary: 1. Simple logo placement to reflect vehicle ownership and inclusion in the campus fleet 2. Special applications and regulations for Campus Security vehicles 3. Promotional wraps to showcase an offering or unique point of distinction at the university Regardless of the application, the underlying objective is to communicate the university s identity clearly and to present a professional, consistent face to the world as these vehicles ply the roadways of our surrounding communities. Drivers using university-branded vehicles should always be aware that their behaviour while in and around the vehicle, as well as their choice of parking location, reflects directly on the university community. Before any university-owned or -leased vehicle is placed into service by the Motor Pool, identity graphics must be applied as per the guidelines. Any request for exceptions must be discussed with and agreed upon by the Marketing department within the University Relations department. Questions For questions about vehicular signage with respect to layout, colours, and/or use of the university logo, or to obtain high-resolution electronic files, please contact University Relations at brand@ucalgary.ca.
16.02 Simple logo placement on standard fleet vehicles 3 The following standards are provided for the proper use, placement, and colour of the university s logo on campus fleet vehicles, including trucks, cars, vans, trailers, boats, motorized carts and other service vehicles. An uncluttered and professional design that is consistent throughout the university fleet is provided below for use in most applications. All university vehicles that display the logo should conform to these identity standards. Due to the variety of vehicle body styles, variations may be permitted on a case-by-case basis. Colour The most common paint colour for campus fleet vehicles is white, allowing the official university full-colour logo to be used in most cases. In cases where this is impossible (e.g. brightly painted construction vehicles), a single-colour logo will be provided to suit the vehicle s base colour. The university works with several suppliers of vehicle decals. Please contact the Fleet Manager, Lee Ferrari, at or lferrari@ucalgary.ca to get information on approved suppliers and vinyl options. Decals should be removed or replaced immediately if their condition deteriorates or if irreparable vandalism occurs. Vehicle Colour The university purchases white vehicles in order to retain the highest possible resale value.
Size and position 4 The University of Calgary logo should appear on the front doors (driver and passenger) at approximately 5 high for small-to medium-sized cars. For larger trucks and vans, it should appear on either the front doors or above the back wheel well at 6 high. The logo should not be more than 60 percent of the total width of the door. The logo should be centered from left to right and top to bottom. Avoid trim and uneven surfaces. Centre it in the top side-panel area above side molding or no less than 6 from top (if there is no side molding). 2 Small to medium car 100 Truck or van
Unit names 5 For security purposes, the default for fleet vehicles is to not display the name of the functional or business unit using them. Business unit names or individual department names may, however; be placed on the vehicle, as needed and appropriate, but should be placed apart from the university identity as follows and set in Gotham Bold typeface, in red or black vinyl. Avoid trim and uneven surfaces. Centre it in the top door-panel area above side molding or no less than 6 from top (if there is no side molding). 154 MAINTENANCE Fleet number For fleet management purposes, individual vehicles often bear a unique identifying unit number. This number can be placed on the back of the vehicle (trunk, truck bed) on the upper left-hand side, or on the front panel. It should be at least 2 tall and be rendered in black vinyl, set in Gotham Bold typeface. Fleet number
Other graphics 6 The University of Calgary logo cannot be used in conjunction with other logos on vehicles. Exceptions to this include sponsored vehicles and emergency response vehicles that, by law, require inclusion of certain graphic elements. Sponsored vehicles and trailers Sponsor decals must never be equal to or greater in size than the university logo on a university-operated vehicle. Sponsor logos must always appear with supporting context (e.g. this vehicle is generously sponsored by Acme Ltd.). Sponsor logos must be removed when/if sponsorship expires. Please contact University Relations to discuss any possible exceptions. Stickers University of Calgary vehicles should never display bumper stickers or decals promoting other non-university organizations or presenting innuendo or offcolour messaging. University vehicles may display official stickers or decals in support of university-sanctioned programs and initiatives, such as Dinos Athletics, the idle-free program and safety programs. Magnetic sign panels The use of magnetic sign panels with the university identity on vehicles that are not part of the university fleet is prohibited. Vanity plates The use and added cost of customized vanity licence plates is not permitted. Promotional licence plate frames The use of such frames is not permitted. Use of university identity on non-university vehicles Generally, this is not permitted, with the exception of promotional decals for alumni or Dinos initiatives. Please contact the Marketing team in University Relations to discuss your specific opportunity.

16.04 Campus security vehicles 10 The manner in which Campus Security vehicles are tagged and branded must comply with the provincial Security Services and Investigators Act legislation, section 10.4 (see below), and the design must be approved by the Solicitor-General: Vehicle markings are a key element of establishing corporate images for business licensees and a safety feature for licensees during the course of their duties. Vehicle markings only pertain to license classes that perform security services. They are not mandatory, however, where vehicle markings are utilized they must be done in accordance with the standards and the requirements prescribed below: Vehicles may have colour stripes of any combination provided they do not, in the Registrar s opinion, resemble the color system of the RCMP, any Alberta municipal police agency, Alberta sheriff, or a community peace officer agency. CAMPUS SECURIT Y The word SECURITY, SECURITY SERVICES or SECURITY AGENT, in uppercase letters, must be prominently displayed in a color that contrasts with the color of the vehicle: On both sides of the vehicle in letters not less than 4 high. On the front and back (includes visors, windows, bumpers and bug screens) of the vehicle in letters not less than 3 high. The name of the business licensee must be displayed on the vehicle. The agency crest or logo must appear on the both sides of the vehicle. The crest must clearly display, at a minimum, the employing agency name. Each security vehicle also has a numerical marker on the roof for identification of patrol units from above. These numbers measure approximately 4 ft in height. The material used to decal security vehicles must be 3M reflective vinyl.
16.05 Promotional wraps The University of Calgary offers many compelling programs some of which use university vehicles to transport students and equipment that engage the community beyond campus (e.g. Outdoor Centre programs, Continuing Education, Dinos Athletics, sports and summer camps etc.). Our fleet vehicles also travel city roads on a regular basis to make deliveries and service multiple campus locations. This presents a good opportunity to promote the things that make this university distinct and different. All promotional vehicle wraps should be developed in partnership with the Marketing team in University Relations. Each wrap should feature the university identity in a prominent position, with strong graphic elements selected to feature the subject matter in a positive, vibrant, colour-rich manner (in keeping with our overall brand guidelines for colour and photography [if used]). Each wrap should have a clear and simple message with an obvious call to action that is not highly time-sensitive (given the cost and typical lifespan of a wrap). If the wrap features individual people, they must provide their approval prior to installation. Promotional vehicle wraps should never obstruct lines of sight for the driver or in any way endanger those operating or riding in the vehicle. If incorporating photography, wraps should be tested before installation to ensure that no rivets, bolts, wheel-wells, or door handles are located inappropriately on the graphic. Drivers of wrapped vehicles are encouraged to keep them clean and to educate themselves on the subject matter of the wrap in case members of the public ask about the creative treatment or messaging. Promotional wraps should be removed immediately if their condition starts to deteriorate, if irreparable vandalism occurs, or if the promotion has reached its end of life. University Relations and Motor Pool reserve the right to request removal in these cases. 11 Dinos Coach-of-the-Year vehicle Dinos football coach vehicle
