1 Michigan School of the Arts Annual Education Report 825 Golf Drive Phone: (248) Pontiac, Michigan Fax: (248) Website: August 16, 2014 Dear Parents and Community Members: We are pleased to present you with the (AER), which provides key information on the educational progress for the Michigan School for the Arts District. The AER addresses the complex reporting information required by Federal and some requirements of State laws. Our staff is available to help you understand this information. Please the main office if you need assistance. This AER is available for you to review electronically by visiting the following web site or you may review a copy in the principal s office at MSA. This report contains the following information: Student Assessment Data Elementary or middle school assessment results on the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP), and assessment results for students with disabilities on Michigan s Alternative Assessment Program (MI-Access or MEAP-Access) Presents achievement data for all five tested subjects (mathematics, reading, science, social studies and writing) compared to targets for all students as well as subgroups of students. Helps parents understand achievement progress within schools and compare these to District and State Achievement. Accountability Scorecard Detail Data and Status Information is provided for MSA related to achievement targets in reading, writing, mathematics, science and social studies answering questions like: Did the District meet achievement targets for all students and subgroups of students? Did the District meet achievement growth targets for all students and subgroups of students? Teacher Qualification Data The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001 requires all school districts to publish the professional qualifications of their teachers. The following information is provided in accordance with that requirement. Michigan School for the Arts has 30 teaching staff members. This includes a social worker, 31A Interventionists, a psychologist, therapists, and speech and language teacher who are not required to hold teaching certificates Degree Number of Teachers % of Teaching Staff Bachelor s 25 83% Master s 4 13% Education Specialist 1 3% Certificate Type Provisional (Initial) 24 80% Professional 6 20%

2 Directory Information The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) Family Educational Rights and Privacy At (FERPA), a Federal law, requires that Michigan School for the Arts, with certain exceptions, obtain your written consent prior to the disclosure of personally identifiable information from your child s education records. However, MSA may disclose appropriately designated directory information without written consent, unless you have advised the district to the contrary in accordance with District procedures. The primary purpose of directory information is to allow Romeo Community Schools to include this type of information from your child s education records in certain school publications including a playbill showing your student s role in a drama production, the annual yearbook, honor roll, graduation programs, and athletic events. In addition, two federal laws require local educational agencies receiving assistance under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1963 (ESEA) to provide military recruiters, upon request, with the following information unless parents have advised the local educational agency that they do not want their student s information disclosed without their prior written consent. This information may include: student name, address, telephone number, degrees, honors and awards received, major field of study, participation in school-sponsored activities and sports, date of attendance/graduation, photograph/film/video image, weight and height of members of athletic teams, date and place of birth and grade level. Michigan School for the Arts Board of Directors Doug Carpenter President Dr. Bob Bouvier Vice President Denise Hobbs Treasurer Roderick Wynn Secretary MICHIGAN SCHOOL FOR THE ARTS School Parent Involvement Policy Michigan School for the Arts believes that parents (including those who are economically disadvantaged, have disabilities, have limited English, have limited literacy, are of any racial or ethnic minority background, or are parents of migratory children) are partners with teachers and other staff in the education of their children and that parent involvement and empowerment are essential at all levels throughout the school district. Michigan School for the Arts believes that student academic achievement requires that parents have an understanding of curriculum, academic achievement standards, assessments, district/school policies and procedures, and of how to monitor their children s progress and work with educators to improve the achievement of their children. Procedure District Administration shall work in collaboration with parents and guardians and shall actively support the schools and parents in enhancing parent involvement by: respecting parents as partners in the education of their children; valuing diversity and the need for equity in each school; promoting parent involvement in district leadership and decision-making; fostering a welcoming and responsive environment for parents; ensuring accountability of staff at all levels throughout the district in working with parents as partners; valuing the need for partnerships within public and private entities at MSA; establishing and promoting communications as a source of trust and understanding between the district and parents. Principals, teachers and all school staff shall work in collaboration with parents and guardians by: respecting parents as partners in the education of their children and supporting their role as first and life-long teachers; valuing diversity and equity in each child s learning; encouraging achievement of all students; promoting parent involvement in site- based leadership and decision making; valuing partnerships with the public and private entities within the Michigan School for the Arts community; establishing and promoting communication as a source of trust and understanding between the school and parents. Parents/Guardians are asked and encouraged to be involved in their children s learning and education by: understanding and respecting the mission and values of the school; respecting teachers and supporting school staff as partners in the education of their children; sharing responsibilities for improved academic achievement among parents/guardian, the school, and the student; understanding school procedures and opportunities to contribute or receive support; utilizing multiple lines of communication between parents, school staff and the district on the instruction, achievement and conduct of their children; participating in educational opportunities that will include but are not limited to: strategies/reinforcing learning at home, discipline and understanding cultural differences; valuing diversity and the need for equity in each child s learning; participating in site- based leadership and decision- making; A District-wide Parent Advisory Council, made up of district stakeholders to be appointed according to procedures approved by the Superintendent; shall be established to make recommendations to the Board regarding strategies to implement and ensure success of this policy. The council shall draft regulations to address the requirements of Section 1118 of the No Child Left Behind Act, which shall be reviewed annually and revised as needed, by the school administration and school Board of Directors
