2 CHARTERED INSTITUTE OF PUBLIC RELATIONS QUALIFICATIONS The CIPR is the professional body for PR practitioners in the UK. With 10,000 members, involved in all aspects of the public relations industry, it is the largest body of its type in Europe. The CIPR Foundation Award, Advanced Certificate and Diploma are the main professional qualifications specifically designed for PR practitioners. They are widely recognised within the communications industry, both in the UK and around the world. The courses run on a part-time basis, which means you can study alongside your work. You can practise what you learn right away, and both you and your employer will see immediate benefits from your studies. You will be taught by experienced practitioners and will be able to broaden your perspective by learning alongside other PR professionals from different sectors and industries. 3 RESOURCES AND SUPPORT Cambridge Marketing College s public relations courses are led by an accredited CIPR teacher who is also a PR practitioner. Teaching is of the highest quality and given by an experienced team of public relations professionals. The programme of study is aimed at helping each student attain the best possible grade in their CIPR qualification. On joining a course, students will be given an introductory letter and relevant textbooks that will help get their studies started before the first teaching day. Detailed slides and notes for all study days will be available to download from Cambridge Marketing College s website. There will also be a webinar for each module. Support throughout the course of study will be given by an allocated tutor and conducted in the preferred way for the student, whether that be at the taught sessions or (by mutual agreement) by , telephone or skype. Cambridge Marketing College s public relations course students will be able to share questions, views and experience with each other outside the classes through a dedicated discussion forum on the college s website. Students will also have access to CIPR s on line learning hub, with distinctionlevel assignment examples among other resources, and to a range of public relations academic journals to help them with their studies. 4 CIPR FOUNDATION AWARD The CIPR Foundation Award is an A-level equivalent qualification and provides a detailed introduction to PR, including essential writing and other technical skills. The course is the CIPR entry level qualification and is designed for those new to public relations who want to learn quickly the basic techniques of this communications discipline and develop writing and other essential skills. It is a part-time, vocational course with three study days (Saturdays) and one three-hour examination to complete, meaning you could gain a valuable qualification and a head start in public relations within 12 weeks. THE COURSE Available by Blended or Distance Learning Bristol th October 31st October Edinburgh th October 7th November Cambridge ENROLMENT CRITERIA You need to have at least five GCSEs at grade C or above. In addition, if English is not your first language you must be able to demonstrate proficiency in the language - spoken and written - to an International Language Testing System (IELTS) band score of 7.0 or above or equivalent. Distinguishing PR activities The role of public relations within an organisation, its relationship with marketing and other communications disciplines and key concepts such as relationship building, managing reputation and engaging people. 2. Writing for news media and online audiences The skills of effective writing and best practice in working with the news media and online audiences using social media. 3. Ethics and the PR professional The role of the professional PR practitioner and ethical issues. Study days and support will be given by an experienced PR practitioner. Study sessions involve a range of learning methods including interactive exercises, video material and case studies, and will be backed up with study session material and further reading sources. ASSESSMENT A 3 hour examination including a report, news release/blog post and short essay. Cambridge Marketing College has a reputation for quality and success. 5 CIPR ADVANCED CERTIFICATE The Advanced Certificate is aimed at those in their first years of working in PR or communications and who would like to take the next step in their career. The course, which is taught and assessed at undergraduate level, provides a good practical grounding in public relations. The course provides a student with a solid grounding in all of the key concepts, theories, techniques and skills needed to become an effective PR practitioner. It is a part-time, vocational course, which gives students the basic knowledge and understanding of PR theory and practice to develop as effective and efficient communications professionals. THE COURSE Available via Blended and Distance Learning The course takes place over 12 months and comprises 48 hours teaching. Cambridge 20th February 9th April 4th June 10th Sept Bristol th October 21st November 9th January 7th May ENROLMENT CRITERIA Applicants for the CIPR Advanced Certificate must be at least 21 years of age and: hold any UK degree; or have two years relevant full-time employment in PR and five GCSEs grade C or above, one of which must be English Language; or have a LCCIEB Group Diploma in PR, plus one year s relevant experience. 6 CIPR DIPLOMA The CIPR Diploma is for more experienced professionals and is taught and assessed at postgraduate level. The course focuses on strategic public relations and students will be encouraged to analyse critically and appreciate PR as an integral part of successful business practice. Topics include PR as a management function; theoretical approaches; reputation management; corporate responsibility and stakeholder theory; issues and crisis management; and PR planning THE COURSE AVAILABLE VIA BLENDED OR DISTANCE LEARNING The course takes place over 12 months and comprises 48 hours teaching. For their final assessment, students, supported by their tutor, work on a project in their chosen specialist area. Very often this project is work-related, which also benefits students employers. Students will examine case-studies and practical PR examples, and discuss them with other PR practitioners in workshops. Recommended texts are also used for a more theoretical analysis. 8 OUR TUTORS ALAN ANSTEAD Alan is a public relations practitioner with considerable international experience working for governments and NGOs. In 2010 he established a charity, Equality, that works for and with Roma who migrated to the UK. Before that he led work to develop the communications profession within the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and its 250 British Embassies overseas. Alan is the CIPR qualifications course leader at Cambridge Marketing College. He is a Chartered Institute of Public Relations accredited teacher/trainer, a member of the CIPR and an Accredited Practitioner and a former student at CMC, 15 years ago. ALISON THEAKER Alison Theaker has twenty five years experience in the PR industry as a practitioner, academic and author. She was formerly Scholar in Residence in the School of Marketing Communication at Emerson College, Boston, USA. Previously she was the first Head of Education at the then Institute of Public Relations, responsible for the development of the CIPR s Diploma and Advanced Certificate, the launch of the first CPD scheme for the PR industry in Europe, and setting up and revising frameworks for Approved Courses and Approved Trainers. Alison is author of the industry standard Public Relations Handbook. She is a Fellow of the CIPR and has delivered research papers at conferences in the UK, US and Australia on team working in PR, improving students writing skills and the future of PR as a profession. WENDY THOMPSON Wendy is a professional marketer with 16 years experience, with commercial, B2B, and blue chip companies including Psion and as Head of Marketing at Romieke. Wendy and her husband took over the ownership and operation of The Regent Hotel on the Isle of Bute, which won several awards, before becoming Head of Communications at Steria. Wendy is a member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, Chartered Institute of Public Relations and the Institute of Direct Marketing, and a Chartered Marketer. ALLISON THOMAS Allison has over 20 years experience across all disciplines of marketing communications and has a Masters Degree in Marketing, is a Chartered Marketer with the CIM and also has a Diploma in Journalism. As a delegate of CMC you enter into a learning agreement for the duration of your support time, the elements of which are designed to assist the smooth The College will provide: Course materials relevant text books and study guides Tutor who are active marketers with up to date knowledge and experience Tutors comments on exam practice questions and one draft of each assignment within 10 working days A response to ed administrative enquiries within 48 hours Signed and dated Remember you are studying for a professional qualification and therefore you need to: Read the course material as instructed Provide draft assignments and exam practice questions by the College s published deadlines Provide final assignments to arrive at the College by the College s published deadline Set aside sufficient regular times to study Register for CIM membership and Assessment Fees for the duration of your course SECTION 5 CHECKLIST Please check you have completed your application in full: Personal Details (including delivery address) Payment Details (Direct Debit forms completed if applicable) CV Provided Course Details

15 TERMS AND CONDITIONS 1. It is the responsibility of each applicant to satisfy the entry requirements of the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), CAM Foundation or Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) (as applicable). Every assistance will be provided by Cambridge Marketing Colleges (CMC) to enable the applicant to obtain this information from the CIM, CAM or CIPR. 2. All CIM or CAM membership and assessment fees are payable direct to the CIM or CAM. Payment of CMC enrolment fees should be made by cheque (payable to Cambridge Marketing College), direct debit or credit card and must accompany the application form for a place to be reserved. Tuition fees must be paid in advance of the commencement of the course or as agreed with the College. 3. All copy right on material provided by CMC is the property of CMC. 4. CMC tuition fees do not include CIM or CAM membership and assessment fees or social evenings. 5. CMC reserves the right to revise tuition fees at any time. 6. CMC reserves the right to cancel a course or change the schedule for any course, in which case all delegates will be given due notice and also given the options of change or cancellation. In the case of cancellation of a course by CMC prior to commencement, a full refund will be given. 7. CMC accepts no liability to provide extra tuition because of delegate absence through, for example, illness. 8. CMC reserves the right to refuse any bookings. 9. It is a condition of enrolment that a delegate thereby agrees: (a) To take reasonable care of the health and safety of themselves and of the other persons who may be affected by his acts or omissions. (b) To co-operate with all members of the CMC staff in maintaining the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work (1974) Act. (c) Not to interfere with, intentionally or recklessly, nor to misuse anything provided in the interest of health and safety or welfare in the CMC. (d) The CMC accepts no liability for injury or accident however caused whilst in attendance at the College premises. 10. Tutor Support is for one or two years as specified on enrolment. Extensions may be agreed at CMC discretion and are subject to a renewal charge. Important Notes The formation or continuation of any course or class is dependent upon adequate delegate enrolment and attendance (0) The CMC undertakes to take all reasonable steps to provide educational services in the manner set out in the Welcome Pack and in other documents. Should industrial action or other circumstances beyond the control of the CMC interfere with its ability to provide such services, the CMC undertakes to use all reasonable steps to minimise the resultant disruption to educational services. The CMC does not undertake any absolute obligation whatsoever to provide educational services in the manner specified in the Introductory Pack or in any other document, nor does it undertake any other obligation in respect of the provision of educational services which is more onerous than the obligations set out herein. Should you become a delegate of the CMC, this notice shall be a term of any contract between you and the CMC. Any offer of a place made to you by the CMC is made on the basis that in accepting such an offer you signify your consent to the incorporation of this notice as a term of any such contract. The CMC leaflet is issued for information purposes only, and whilst every care has been taken in its preparation, the CMC cannot accept liability for the consequences of any inaccuracy. It is issued on the express condition that all matters covered in it are subject to change from time to time. In particular, the CMC reserves the right, in every case, at its discretion and for whatever reason, to amend fees, and to alter or not to alter classes, courses, parts of courses and other opportunities to study. Any doubt or ambiguity arising from the interpretation of any provision in the CMC leaflet shall be decided solely by the CMC in accordance with English Law. Whilst every care is taken to ensure that advice given as part of any teaching/training programme is correct, neither CMC nor its lecturers or any other staff will accept responsibility for any loss, damage, etc., howsoever arising occasioned by the implementation of such advice. CMC is an equal opportunities training establishment and will not discriminate on the basis of age, gender, race or religion. CMC reserves the right to vary these Terms and Conditions. Cancellations Cancellations may be made up to 30 days from date of letter of acknowledgement and a full refund will be made less VAT for administration charges.
