6 VBS Keynote SpeAKer FriDaY, March 20 2:30 PM From Concept to reality: What i ve Learned along the Way CarMEn a. PuLiaFiTO, MD, MBa Carmen A. Puliafito, MD, MBA is the dean of the keck School of Medicine of usc and holder of the May S. and John Hooval Dean s Chair in Medicine. Prior to leading the keck School, he was director of the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and chair of the Department of ophthalmology of the university of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Previously, he was founding director of the new England Eye Center and chair of the Department of ophthalmology at Tufts university. Throughout his career Dr. Puliafito has been an innovator, most recently participating in the introduction of bevacizumab (Avastin) for the treatment of retinal disorders. He was the first to describe the use of the semiconductor diode laser for retinal photo - coagulation, and he did pioneering basic science research in excimer laser photoablation and optical breakdown and photodisruption. He established a major optical imaging program while at the university of Miami, and is still actively working with his laboratory team investigating novel retinal imaging approaches at usc, most notably an initial description of the novel technique of photo acoustic ophthalmoscopy. Dr. Puliafito is recognized as co-inventor of the technology of optical coherence tomography (oct) and with being the first ophthalmologist to use this technology to study the human macula in health and disease. from the first publication about oct in 1991 to the implementation of the first clinical system two years later, Dr. Puliafito has led in the development of oct technology a technology which has truly revolutionized retinal practice and made a real difference for both patients and retinal specialists. from a single system at the new England Eye Center at Tufts university School of Medicine in 1993, oct has grown to have a global impact, now with more than 20,000 systems in use every day throughout the world. for his work on oct, Dr. Puliafito was awarded (along with James fujimoto and Eric Swanson) the 2002 rank Prize the world s most prestigious award in optoelectronics. In 2012, also for his work on oct, Dr. Puliafito was awarded (along with James fujimoto, Eric Swanson, David Huang and Joel Schuman) the Champalimaud Vision Award, often called the nobel Prize for Vision. Keynote Speaker Honorees A graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Medical 2013 Stanley Chang, MD School, Dr. Puliafito earned his MBA from the Wharton 2014 William S. Tasman, MD School of Business of the university of Pennsylvania. 6 V B S V I C E 2 015

7 VBS LIFetIMe MentorSHIp AWArD SaturDaY, March 21 12:00 PM Proton Beam irradiation of uveal Melanomas: The First Forty Years EVangELOS gragoudas, MD Dr. Evangelos gragoudas has been the Director of retina Service at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary since 1985 and has trained more that 100 clinical fellows and over 50 research fellows from all over the world. He is a leading clinician-researcher and has spent over 25 years investigating treatments for intraocular tumors and macular disorders. He is considered a world authority on the diagnosis and manage - ment of ocular tumors and is world-renowned for his groundbreaking work in the use of proton irradiation to treat intraocular melanoma. Dr. gragoudas has long-standing interest in photodynamic therapy (PDT) for the treatment of ocular tumors and ocular neovascularization. He collaborated with Dr. Joan W. Miller on preclinical studies of PDT using the light-sensitive dye, Verteporfin, for the treatment of choroidal neovascularization. Dr. gragoudas was instrumental in designing and executing the early clinical studies and was an integral member of the study group and writing group for the large clinical trials. Based on these large clinical trials, photodynamic therapy using Verteporfin was approved by the health authorities throughout the world and became the first widely used treatment for neovascular retinal disease that effectively slowed disease progression. Dr. gragoudas also pioneered work on ocular angiogenesis and anti-angiogenesis therapy. He worked with a group of ophthalmologists, including Drs. Joan Miller, Tony Adamis, Pat D Amore and others in collaboration with the laboratory of noted angiogenesis discoverer, Dr. Judah folkman. This team first demonstrated the critical role of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEgf) in ocular neovascularization and went on to develop therapies targeting VEgf. Macugen, the first compound based on this approach effectively slowed the progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the most frequent cause of blindness in patients over age 60. A second-generation pharma - ceutical, lucentis was found to result in vision improvement for the first time in approximately one-third of patients with neovascular AMD who underwent treatment. Dr. gragoudas completed his medical training in Athens, greece and his ophthalmology residency at Boston university School of Medicine. Dr. gragoudas has published over 200 articles in peer-reviewed journals and written or authored more than 100 chapters, reviews, and books; he lectures nationally and internationally. Lifetime Mentorship award Honorees 2013 Allan E. kreiger, MD 2014 Harry W. flynn, Jr., MD V B S V I C E
