2 September 2014 Battalion 7 Significant Incidents Residential Structure Fire Pinole DATE: September 6 th, 2014 TIME OF ALARM: 21:20 hours TYPE OF ALARM: Residential Structure Fire LOCATION: 2570 Silvercrest Ct. Pinole, CA RESPONSE: 4 Engine Companies, 1 Truck Company and 2 Battalion Chiefs ASSISTING AGENCIES: Pinole Fire Department, Contra Costa County Fire District, Rodeo-Hercules Fire District, El Cerrito Fire Department, and PG&E TOTAL FIRE PERSONNEL AT SCENE: 19 Pinole Fire Engine 73 and Battalion 7, Contra Costa County Fire - Engine 69 (El Sobrante) and Engine 70 (San Pablo), Rodeo-Hercules Fire - Engine 76 (Hercules), and El Cerrito Fire Truck 71 and Battalion 71 responded to a reported Residential Structure Fire on Silvercrest Court in Pinole. Upon arrival Battalion 7 and E73 found smoke showing from the attached garage. The adult female occupant of the home was asleep at the time of the fire and was alerted to the fire by a neighbor. The occupant was able to escape the structure without injury. Firefighters from E73 initiated an offensive strategy of fire attack and were able to suppress the fire quickly and confine the fire damage to the garage. Additional Firefighters performed search, ventilation and secured electrical and gas hazards. The adjacent homes were threatened, but not damaged by the fire. PG&E responded and assisted with the damaged electrical system. During this incident, Contra Costa County Fire - Engine 9 (Pacheco) covered San Pablo. The cause of the fire was traced to the failure of an electric clothes dryer. There were no civilian or Firefighter injuries during this incident. The displaced family was being housed and supported by other family and neighbors. Four Engine Companies, one Truck Company, and Two Command Vehicles responded staffed by 17 Firefighters and 2 Battalion Chiefs. This incident highlights the importance and need to have working smoke detectors in every home. Vehicle Accident with Rescue - Hercules DATE: September 13 th, 2014 TIME OF ALARM: 08:09 hours TYPE OF ALARM: Vehicle Accident off the roadway with Extrication LOCATION: State Highway 4 near the Franklin Canyon Golf Course Hercules, CA RESPONSE: 1 Quint Company, 1 Engine Company, 1 Rescue Company and 1 Battalion Chief ASSISTING AGENCIES: Rodeo-Hercules Fire District, Pinole Fire Department, Contra Costa County Fire District, AMR, REACH, and CHP
3 TOTAL FIRE PERSONNEL AT SCENE: 16 Rodeo-Hercules Fire - Quint 76 (Hercules), Pinole Fire Engine 73 and Battalion 7, Contra Costa County Fire - Rescue 69 (El Sobrante), AMR and REACH (Medical Helicopter) responded to a reported vehicle accident off the roadway with a patient still trapped on State Highway 4 near the Franklin Canyon Golf Course in Hercules. Upon arrival, Quint 76 found that the vehicle was approximately 100 feet down an embankment and resting on a drainage pipe. The driver of the vehicle was seriously injured and was still severely trapped in the vehicle. The single vehicle had lost control, hit a guardrail, overturned and traveled down the embankment coming to rest a very short distance from the creek bed. Quint 76 s personnel began extrication operations to free the entrapped driver from the vehicle. Rescue 69 arrived and secured and stabilized the vehicle. Additionally, Rescue 69 set up a rope rescue system to bring the patient up to the roadway where he could receive additional medical care and be transported to the Trauma Center. E73 s paramedics provided emergency medical treatment to the patient while he was being extricated and brought up to the ambulance. The 60 year old male patient sustained serious head, chest and extremity injuries. Once packaged and brought up to the ambulance, the patient continued to receive advanced life support treatment from Fire and AMR paramedics. He was then transferred to the REACH Medical Helicopter and transported to John Muir Hospital Trauma Center in Walnut Creek. CHP provided traffic control and scene safety and assisted with securing the Medical Helicopter s landing zone. During this incident, Contra Costa Fire Engine 70 (San Pablo) responded to a critical medical emergency in Pinole Valley and Crockett-Carquinez Fire - Engine 78 (Crockett) provided coverage for Battalion 7. There were no Firefighter injuries during this complex incident. One Quint Company, one Engine Company, one Rescue Company and one Command Vehicle responded staffed by 15 Firefighters and 1 Battalion Chief.

6 Residential Structure Fire Tara Hills DATE: September 28, 2014 TIME OF ALARM: 1:52 am TYPE OF ALARM: Residential Structure Fire LOCATION: 2651 Kavanagh Road, San Pablo RESPONSE: 1 Truck Company, 4 Engine Companies, 2 Battalion Chiefs, TOTAL FIRE PERSONNEL AT SCENE: 16 Pinole Engine 73 (Pinole) Contra Costa County Fire - Engine 70 (San Pablo), Engine 69 (El Sobrante), Quint 76 (Rodeo- Hercules) Engine 75 (Rodeo-Hercules), Battalion 7 (El Sobrante), and Battalion 71 (El Cerrito) responded to a reported structure fire. Upon arrival Engine 73 found light smoke issuing from the kitchen area. All residents were able to escape and the fire was contained to the Kitchen area above the stove. Firefighters initiated an offensive strategy of fire attack and victim search. Firefighters were successful in confining the fire to the area above the kitchen cabinets above the stove. Significant overhaul was performed in the attic area to prevent further potential damage. The cause of the fire was deemed accidental. The residents were allowed to return to the home.
7 Additional Incidents: 9/3/14 - At 1600 hours, E73, E69 and Richmond T68 responded for a fire sprinkler activation at David s Bridal. 9/11/14 E73, E69, E70, E78, Q76, B7 and B71 responded for a structure fire Mahan Way. 9/12/14 E73 and a medical helicopter responded for a motorcycle accident on Bear Creek Road. The patient sustained head, neck and back injuries and was flown by medical helicopter to John Muir s Trauma Center. 9/14/14 E73 responded for a motorcycle accident on Bear Creek Road. 9/24/14- E73 responded for a vehicle fire on Interstate 80. 9/24/14- E73, E69, E70, E71, Q76, B7 and B71 responded for a structure fire at Wing Stop on Fitzgerald Dr. Training Engineer Jim Brooks completed 6 hours of training and testing and was successfully recertified as a National Child Car Seat Safety Technician. Active Shooter training with Pinole PD. Building Construction Training. Fire Behavior and Tactics and Strategy. EMS Training: Multi-casualty incidents and advanced life support airway management. Truck Company Operations Training. Fire Investigation. Off-Road Driver s Training. Rope Rescue Training. Ongoing Probationary Firefighter Training. After Action Reviews for significant incidents. Company Standards Training. Public Education E73 continued efforts to improve life safety in the community by installing smoke detectors in single family residences.
