9 ebubble Calibrations Why is calibration needed? To adjust and align dual axis accelerometer with local gravity field To ensure accuracy of tilt information (and stored with measured points) What if I don t calibrate? Degrades the accuracy of the measured coordinates

10 ebubble Calibrations How often is (re-)calibration needed? When: the R10 suffers severe abuse, e.g. pole drop you enter an area with significantly different local gravity conditions, e.g. a massive granite mountain reaching the user-defined calibration age limit current inside temperature of the R10 is more than 30ºC compared to the last calibration warning message shown

Pole straightness: a bent pole will directly affect the accuracy of the calibration, especially when you use a different pole for the actual measurements Bubble reference: calibrate against properly calibrated physical bubble Pole stability: receiver should be as vertical and as stable as possible, a bipod (or similar) helps the most

Uses internal tilt and compass sensors to determine the spatial relationship between the Trimble R10 and the tip of the survey pole Allows you to directly measure points which were not accessible before with GNSS receivers or only through time-consuming offsetting technique Eliminates the need of having the pole always level for measurements Saves you time-consuming getting the pole level set up

26 Compensated Points Hardware and Environments Magnetometer Senses any magnetic field: We want to sense earth s local magnetic field and compare to R10 internal magnetic model Good environment en.wikipedia.org Away from any metal objects or objects that generate magnetic fields Bad environment Vehicles & heavy machinery High voltage overhead or underground power lines Metal reinforced buildings and more.

28 Compensated Points Calibrations Why is calibration needed? To determine the R10 s magnetic characteristics in the ideal earth s magnetic field in the area To align magnetic model with the axis of the R10 What if I don t calibrate? Tilt corrected coordinates will be wrong Degrades the accuracy of the measured coordinates

29 Compensated Points Calibrations How often is (re-)calibration needed? When you enter an area with a different local magnetic environment Otherwise the same rules apply as the tilt sensors for ebubble and tilt auto-measure NOTE: every time you recalibrate the tilt sensor, it invalidates the magnetometer model alignment and therefore a new calibration is needed Are there additional considerations I need to be aware of while calibrating? Stay far away from any magnetic disturbance! Calibrating the magnetometer near sources of magnetic disturbance does not "correct" for the interference caused by these objects!

36 Compensated Points Magnetic disturbance 0-9: Correctly calibrated magnetometer and environment is free of magnetic interference 10-50: Magnetometer is not correctly calibrated AND / OR moderate magnetic disturbance in the environment Trimble Access will show warning in status line and ask for confirmation upon storing the point 51-99: Magnetometer is not correctly calibrated AND / OR severe magnetic disturbance in the environment Trimble Access will not be able to store the point unless the pole's tilt distance is <0.4inch (1 cm) of level
