1 GLP e-news No. 49 August 25, 2012 We would like to inform you on a short and informal news update (GLP e-news) from the Global Land Project IPO, with some recent information that might be relevant to you. We send these updates on occasion to supplement the GLP News. Apologies for multiple postings. If you want to contribute with items to these newsletters, please contact the IPO ([email protected]). Also please let us know if you do not want to receive these updates in the future. 1) GLP News IHDP Annual Report 2011 released. IHDP is pleased to release its 2011 Annual Report, featuring editorials by its newest Scientific Committee members, Professors Ruth Oniang'o and Dan Ariely, and highlighting some of the current challenges and opportunities of human dimensions research on global environmental change. Compiled in a shorter, more concise format, this 2011 report has been designed to offer its readers an overview of the programme and its projects, and provide a comprehensive update on IHDP's latest activities and progress. Download the report directly at the IHDP website. Special issue of the journal Earth System Dynamics on Land Use impacts still welcomes GLP contributions. The special issue Impacts of Land-Uses and Land-Cover Changes (LULCC) on the functioning of the Earth System is part of the IGBP synthesis activities on this topic. The special issue aims to provide an overview of Land use and land cover change as a central topic in global change research. It is a high priority to improve the fundamental understanding of LULCC interactions with human, bio-geochemical, and bio-geophysical dynamics, and of LULCC impacts on the regional and planetary climate system, as well as on the functioning of our socio-economic system. This special issue aims to synthesize existing research, new findings, and to provide a roadmap for future research. Deadline for submissions: November 1st, More information here, or

The briefs produced by the scientific community to inform the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) were commissioned by the international conference Planet Under Pressure: New Knowledge Towards Solutions ( The all nine policy briefs are available to download as Pdfs on the International Geosphere Biosphere Program Website (IGBP). 2) Call for contributions & Upcoming Events Call for papers: Land Systems Science Symposium at Association of American Geographers Annual Meeting 2013, Los Angeles. A special symposium focused on research advances and needs in the geographical dimensions of Land Systems and Land Change is being organized to take place within the 2013 AAG Annual Meeting in Los Angeles. This symposium builds on a long tradition of research in land use and land cover, and of coupled human and natural systems within Geography, the focus provided by the Journal of Land Use Science and Land, and interests of the land change science community. Titles and abstracts for papers, conforming to AAG annual meeting guidelines, initially should be submitted to Richard Aspinall ([email protected]) as soon as possible and before 31 August Please, check the complete information about the symposium here, before sending the abstracts. MRI Synthesis Workshop on Qualities, Vulnerabilities, and Management of Ecosystem Services in Mountain Regions. 3-5 September Bern, Switzerland. Website. Ecosystem services must be quantified in order to remain relevant for policy making on the global and sub-global levels and must be understood in the context of history and power relations, particularly as they relate to land use.
