1 Blaine Corners Blaine was raised on a row crop and cattle farm in Southern Illinois (near Mt. Vernon). He received his BS/MS from Murray State University in Murray, KY. He then worked for 6 years for Fort Dodge as TM in IL, taught one year as a lecturer at Murray State before returning to graduate school. He got his PhD in Ruminant Nutrition through the University of Missouri-Columbia focusing on use of Distillers Grains with Solubles in growing beef cattle diets. Then he was a nutritionist and ruminant research lead at Merricks of Wisconsin and field nutritionist and later Manager of Beef Technical Services and Products for ADM Alliance Nutrition (Juniata, NE and Quincy, IL). He is currently serving as Nutritionist, Cattle and Equine Technical Services for Pfizer Animal Health and resides in Malvern, IA. Brian Lubbers, DVM, PhD, DACVCP Dr. Lubbers received his DVM from Kansas State University in Following graduation, he worked in private mixed animal practices in California and Iowa for 3 years. In 2005, he returned to Kansas State University as a Clinical Instructor (Agricultural Practices)/Post-Graduate Trainee, where he completed his PhD in Microbiology (Pharmacology). He has been serving as the Microbiology Laboratory Director in the Kansas State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory since In 2010, he became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Clinical Pharmacologists. His primary professional interests are antimicrobial therapy and susceptibility testing in food animals. BIO for: Dee Griffin, DVM, MS Feedlot Production and Health Management Veterinary Specialist Dee Griffin, an Okie raised on a small cow/calf operation, has focused his entire professional career on cattle. After completing his veterinary degree from Oklahoma State University he did a residency and graduate work at Purdue University in pathology & ruminant nutrition. Most of his career has been spent full time in the cattle industry. He was the staff veterinarian for Hitch Enterprises, a family owned operation that had 1200 cows, as many as 20,000 stockers, over 250,000 feeder cattle and two packing plants. He has worked with the BQA program since its inception when Hitch became the first USDA Verified Control Production beef operation. Today he is a Professor at the University of
2 Nebraska in the Veterinary and Biomedical Science Department teaching at the Great Plains Veterinary Educational Center. His emphasis area is developing pre-harvest HACCP (Hazard Analysis, Critical Control Points) production practices dealing with residue avoidance. He has a keen interest in respiratory disease and proper antibiotic usage. Dr. Griffin is the winner of the American Association of Bovine Practitioners national award for Excellence in Preventive Medicine and their national award for Institutional Teaching, Research and Service Excellence. He received the Academy of Veterinary Consultants Consultant of the Year. He serves on the National Cattlemen's Beef Association s Beef Quality & Safety Assurance Advisory Board on the FDA s Veterinary Medical Advisory Committee, the FDA s Minor Use Minor Species committee, and on the Professional Animal Auditor s Certification Organization (PAACO) board. Josh Schlote Josh Schlote graduated from Northeast Community College in 2002 with an Associate s of Applied Science Degree in Veterinary Technology. Following graduation he worked in Lincoln, Nebraska for VCA Williamsburg Animal Hospital and Veterinary Emergency Services of Lincoln. He then transferred to Omaha where he worked at MidWest Veterinary Specialty Hospital, a branch of Kansas State University. While at MidWest, Josh discovered his desire to teach and accepted a teaching position at Northeast Community College. Josh s areas of interest include anesthesia, pain management and dentistry. Josh has done anesthesia and pain management internships at Kansas State Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Colorado State Veterinary Teaching Hospital, and VCA Alameda East Veterinary Hospital in Denver Colorado. Josh recently finished his Bachelor s Degree in Veterinary Technology, Advanced Clinical Nursing from St. Petersburg College in Florida. Josh is currently the lead veterinary technician in charge of clinical labs and lectures on anesthesia, dentistry, radiology and emergency medicine. Josh recently submitted a review paper on the use of Acetaminophen in Veterinary Practices to control pain to the IVAPM. Josh is a member of the International Veterinary Academy of Pain Management (IVAPM) and serves on the Pain Management Advisory Council. Josh is also a member of the American Academy of Pain Management (AAPM), Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society (VECCS), Nebraska Veterinary Technician Association (NVTA), National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA), American Veterinary Dentistry Society (AVDS) and the Association of Veterinary Technician Educators (AVTE). Currently, Josh is perusing his Veterinary Technician Specialty (VTS) in Dentistry and his certification as a Veterinary Pain Practitioner. When not at work, Josh is a member of the Hadar Fire and Rescue, umpires ASA fast pitch softball and enjoys spending time with his wife and 4 children.
3 Dr. Randy L Wheeler Dr. Randy Wheeler has been with the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) for six years. He is the Assistant State Veterinarian and Iowa Veterinary Rapid Response Team Coordinator and also supervisor of the Horse & Dog Bureau at IDALS. Dr. Wheeler graduated from the ISU College of Veterinary Medicine in 1977 and was a mixed animal practitioner for 30 years in the Des Moines and Winterset areas before joining IDALS Animal Industry Bureau. Twenty seven of those years was next to neighboring practice of Stuart Veterinary Clinic which the current State Veterinarian, Dr. David Schmitt, practiced, so he and Dr. Schmitt have had a long collaborating relationship. Randy is a past-president of the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association (IVMA) as well as the Iowa Veterinary Alumni Association, the Iowa Veterinary Medical Foundation and the South West Iowa VMA. He currently serves as a board member on the IVMA Bovine Practitioners Committee and as vice chair of the United States Animal Health Association s Committee on Johne s Disease. Todd Tams Dr. Todd Tams received his DVM degree from The Ohio State University in 1977 and then entered into a mixed practice in Vermont from He then completed an internship at the West Los Angeles Animal Hospital in , followed by a residency in internal medicine at Colorado State University from He was a staff internist at the Angell Memorial Animal Hospital in Boston from , and achieved board certification in internal medicine in Dr. Tams returned to Los Angeles in 1984 and is now Chief Medical Officer for Veterinary Centers of America, as well as a staff internist at the VCA West Los Angeles Animal Hospital. Dr. Tams was named as a Distinguished Alumnus of The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine in Dr. Tams has published two textbooks: 1. Small Animal Endoscopy (MosbylElsevier), second edition published November 1998; and a third edition was published in December, Handbook of Small Animal Gastroenterology (Elsevier), second edition published in 2003 Dr. Tams has presented numerous seminars in the U.S. and abroad on his special interest area of gastroenterology.
4 JK Shearer Dr. Shearer is currently Professor and Extension Veterinarian at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. He received his BS degree from Ashland University in 1971 and his DVM degree from The Ohio State University in Upon graduation he joined the Orrville Veterinary Clinic, Inc. in northeast Ohio where he served as an Associate Veterinarian for 4 ½ years before returning to The Ohio State University to pursue graduate studies in nutrition. He completed his Master s Degree in 1981 and was appointed Assistant Professor in the Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine at The Ohio State University in In 1982 he relocated to the University of Florida where he became Professor and Dairy Extension Veterinarian at the College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Shearer served the University of Florida for 27 years before accepting his current position as Professor and Extension Veterinarian at Iowa State University. His primary research and extension interests are lameness and welfare issues of cattle. He serves as a scientific advisor on several boards dedicated to the continued improvement of animal welfare in livestock production including Humane Farm Animal Care, Dean Foods and Validus. He is a former Chair of the American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP) Animal Welfare Committee (AWC), and is presently serving as Chair of the Food Animal Working Group of the American Veterinary Medical Association s (AVMA) Panel on Euthanasia. He is also a past member of the Board of Directors of the Professional Animal Auditor Certification Organization (PAACO) and on the Organizing Committee of the American College of Animal Welfare (ACAW), a proposed Specialty Board on animal welfare. He is a past recipient of the Florida Distinguished Extension Service Award, the University of Florida s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences Superior Accomplishment Award, and the 2003 USDA Secretary of Agriculture s Honor Award for outstanding innovation in animal health. He has also been honored by The Ohio State University s College of Veterinary Medicine with the Distinguished Alumnus Award, by the American Association of Bovine Practitioners with the Alpharma Award of Excellence and by the AVMA in 2011 as recipient of the AVMA Animal Welfare Award.
