1 Victoria University - Specific Māori Scholarships Hauraki Māori Trust Board Education Grants Grants are available to registered iwi members who are studying towards a diploma or higher level qualification. To be eligible you must whakapapa to one or more of the Hauraki iwi and be on the Tribal Register of Hauraki Māori Trust Board. Grants shall apply to both full time and part time students studying towards a diploma or higher level qualification. Applicants who have received an education grant from the Hauraki Māori Trust Board in previous years, must supply a copy of their academic record. Closing dates: 30 May Hoe Tahi Addiction and Methamphetamine Scholarships The Hoe Tahi scholarship aims to strengthen the addiction treatment workforce by providing opportunities to increase workforce capacity within the addictions sector. Te Rau Matatini is currently seeking applications from people (Māori and non Māori) who are studying towards an addiction related qualification or who are interested in a career within the addiction sector. All applications will be considered. Priority will be given to Māori AOD (Alcohol and other Drug) practitioners, AOD practitioners working with youth; youth or service users thinking of a career in the AOD sector. 2 HRC Māori Seeding Grant Seeding Grants are intended to support the planning and scoping of a potential research project which would subsequently be submitted to the HRC. This could include developing and piloting Māori health research applications. The cost of consulting with particular communities to develop a research project may be covered. Applicants should be New Zealand citizens or hold residency in NZ at the time of application and be of Māori descent. For more information rbrown@hrc.govt.nz or visit Value: Up to $5,000 Closing dates: 28 July Johnston Lawrence Elder Wairarapa Moana Scholarship in Law The partners of Johnston Lawrence Elder, Barristers and Solicitors, of Wellington have established a Scholarship in Law for students from whanau associated with the Mangakino/Pouakani Group. The scholarship is to be awarded to a student enrolled in the LLB course at Victoria University of Wellington. Both academic ability and financial need will be taken into account when awarding the scholarship. Applicants must be descended from an original Ngati Kahungunu Ki Wairarapa owner of the Mangakino/Pouakani lands and certification must be obtained of that descent from the Wairarapa Moana Trust. Value: $1,000 Closing dates: 31 March Kura Mai Tawhiti Scholarships In order for Māori students to participate in international exchanges, the Office of the Pro Vice Chancellor (Māori) will grant scholarships to eligible students who have been approved for exchange to approved exchange partner institutions, and who meet the requirements of the selection panel. The scholarships will be awarded to Māori students who have been accepted for the Vic OE (Victoria Overseas Exchange) programme and show a capacity for leadership and responsibility in business or the wider community. Academic achievement and hardship will also be considered. 3 Māori and Pasifika Education Research These awards are open to people intending to pursue postgraduate study in Māori and Pasifika Education Research or a related subject in 2014 who have a strong interest in working in educational research. Anyone who can demonstrate the following are eligible to apply: * a good undergraduate degree * are enrolled in a full time post graduate course of study * their proposed study is relevant to Māori or Pasifika education policy and research * have an intention to make an ongoing contribution to Māori or Pasifika Education research * a commitment to Māori or Pasifika communities * are permanent residents or New Zealand citizens * are not previous recipients * are not Ministry of Education employees. For more information research.support@minedu.govt.nz or visit New Zealand Post Group Scholarships Available to full time first year undergraduate students of Māori descent studying for a Bachelor of Business Studies, Bachelor of Management Studies or a Bachelor of Commerce at a university in New Zealand. All applicants must be: * New Zealand Māori * studying at a registered New Zealand tertiary institution or at an overseas tertiary institution that meets its own country's accreditation requirements. This is not necessary for Manakura scholarship applicants only * able to show characteristics of the ideal applicant as detailed in the application form * able to describe their contribution to whanau, hapu or iwi following successful completion of their study, and * agree to present milestone reports to the Ngarimu VC and 28th Maori Battalion Board. Additionally, Masters and Doctoral applicants must: * be able to show the link between Maori and the outcome or benefit of their study or work. The applicant needs to share their passion for their chosen area of study with the Ngarimu VC and 28th (Māori) Battalion Board * submit a brief about their study or field. This brief will be assessed against the criteria listed under 3

5 NZ Tobacco Control Research Turanga Doctoral and Masters Scholarships The purpose of the scholarships is to support research students to contribute to the overarching goal of the Tobacco Control Research Turanga, which is to deliver new knowledge to inform policies and practices with the aim of halving smoking prevalence in New Zealand by Full time enrolment in a PhD, Doctor of Clinical Psychology or Masters degree and who are qualified in a field relevant to the award to undertake research on a topic relevant to the Turanga goal of supporting innovative studies leading to halving smoking prevalence by The basis of selection will be: * Academic merit of the candidate; * Nature of the proposed research (including commitment to tobacco control and the Turanga goal, innovativeness of proposed tobacco control policies, interventions and strategies, pragmatic focus and focus on priority topics or the need to reduce smoking among Māori, Pacific people, pregnant women and mental health consumers); * Support of the proposed supervisor and host academic unit. The scholarships are open to citizens or permanent residents of New Zealand who are masters and doctoral students undertaking relevant research at any New Zealand University. In addition to being an NZICA Student Affiliate of Māori heritage and committed to the NZICA pathway, we are looking for an outstanding student who delivers strong academic results. You will be a future leader and team player who contributes to the Māori community and the New Zealand accounting profession. You must be a second year or subsequent year student. For more information scholarships@nzica.com Closing dates: 30 May Philippa & Morvyn Williams Scholarships This scholarship is to encourage study and research which will sustain and promote guardianship by Māori of their cultural heritage, and particularly their language; and to support and affirm Māori women in their role as teachers and leaders of future generations by encouraging them to proceed to graduate work. Preference is given: (i) to candidates whose study is likely to assist in the revitalisation of Māori language, culture and heritage, or the promotion of the Māori language teaching or the empowerment of Māori women. (ii) Financial need may be considered as a factor in the choice of a recipient, and applicants should include mention of such financial need as they feel appropriate. 5

6 The scholarship is tenable by students of Victoria University who during the tenure of the award shall be pursuing a Masters degree or PhD degree. At least one of the successful candidates must be a Māori woman. Form can be downloaded from Value: Subject to funds available Closing dates: 31 March Queen Elizabeth II Postgraduate Fellowship Available to a Māori or non Māori graduate with excellent academic ability, who plans to research at postgraduate level, in a field that will benefit Māori. Applicants must provide a reference from their supervisor/s regarding their research. Open to Māori or Non Māori graduates. For more information info@maorieducation.org.nz Quentin Baxter Memorial Scholarship Fund The purpose of this fund is to provide monetary assistance to students undertaking or proposing to undertake study or research in the Faculty of Law at Victoria University. In even years (e.g. 2010) the scholarship will be open to all full time students of Māori descent who are currently enrolled in one or more second year law courses and who intend to complete an LLB at Victoria. The scholarship will normally be tenable, subject to satisfactory academic progress in the LLB, for up to three years and will be worth $2,000 per annum. Value: A maximum of $2,000 per annum Closing dates: 30 July (Māori students apply in EVEN years, Pasifika students apply in ODD years) Reserve Bank of New Zealand Māori and Pacific Islands' Scholarship The purpose of the scholarship is to encourage Māori and Pacific Islands' students to pursue studies in the field of economics, finance and banking studies. The scholarship is open to Māori and Pacific Islands' university students who have completed economics, finance or banking studies at the 100 level (Completed first year of university), who attained at least a B+ grade and who intend to continue studying to Honours level. Applicants must be studying full time at a New Zealand university. The scholarship will be continued for the original holder up to honours level (4th year) providing the holder continues to perform to the required standard. 7 Rona Scholarship These scholarships are available to Māori undergraduate and graduate students who are enrolled fulltime in 2013 in a fisheries, aquaculture or marine sciences degree. Preference will be given to those students who: are in their last year or second to last year of study towards their degree; have proven academic merit; have proven research experience; demonstrate a commitment to tikanga Māori and te reo Māori; demonstrate a commitment to working in the seafood industry; and are interested in building personal skills and expertise to support Māori economic and social development. Study can be carried out in New Zealand or overseas. The awards will be decided on academic merit and consideration of a statement of goals and aspirations submitted by the applicant. To be eligible you must: * be enrolled in a graduate or postgraduate degree at the School of Psychology. * demonstrate descendent links to Māori or Pasifika. * demonstrate commitment to Māori or Pasifika communities. 8 Sir Hugh Kawharu Masters Scholarship for Innovation in Science The purpose of the scholarship is to support and encourage masters level study by Māori in the sciences. The scholarship is application across a broad range of science disciplines including the physical, mathematical and computational, earth, environment, marine, social, health, biological, biomedical, human, and behavioural sciences. The scholarship is for full time enrolment in a one or two year master s degree in a science discipline; and tenable by persons of Māori descent and applicants should be able to explain their tribal connections. Applicants will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria: * academic excellence and the potential to succeed in the chosen area of study * leadership ability and integrity, including the respect of peers; and * potential contribution of the field of science to Māori social and/or economic development. The Tawera Scholarship is designed to help address Te Putea Whakatupu Trust's strategic focus of lifting the level of Māori participation in middle and senior management capability in a range of industries, including fisheries. Preference will be given to those students who: are in their last year or second to last year of study towards their bachelor degree; demonstrate a commitment to tikanga Māori and te reo Māori; demonstrate a commitment to Māori, iwi, and hapu economic development; have proven academic merit and; are interested in building personal skills and expertise to support Māori /iwi economic and social development. Selection for all Tu Horomata scholarships will be based on: * the student's academic record * support for the intended research within the School/Faculty in the form of a reference statement * the relevance of the intended research project to the interests of Māori and/or * whether the research is in area where Māori are underrepresented * the agreement of Toihuarewa Application form can be downloaded from Value: $12,500 Masters by thesis Up to $5,000 Honours Up to $5,000 Masters by coursework Closing dates: 1 April & 1 October Tumau Awards Open to all Māori and Pacific Students who are studying full time and have either NZ Citizenship or are a Permanent Resident of NZ. Part time students may be considered at the panel's discretion. The awards will be awarded on the basis of financial hardship and satisfactory academic commitment and progress. Factors taken into consideration when assessing hardship could include the shortfall between income and essential expenses, high course costs, high transport costs, family to support, medical conditions or a disability preventing part time work and other extenuating circumstances. 10 Victoria Ahumairangi PhD Scholarship This scholarship is intended to encourage doctoral study by Māori students at Victoria University of Wellington. The scholarships are open to Māori graduates of any university within or outside of New Zealand who intend to enrol full time for a PhD at Victoria University or who have commenced their PhD study at Victoria University. Any student who has completed or is completing their studies at Hato Paora College, Hato Petera College, Turakina Māori Girls' College, St Joseph's Māori Girls'College, Te Aute College, or Hukarere Girls' College and who is enrolled or intends to enrol as a full time student in a degree level programme at Victoria University of Wellington, is eligible to apply.
