2 THE SOLD PROJECT SEX SELLS. CHILDREN. HELP STOP IT BEFORE IT BEGINS OUR MISSION/ To prevent child prostitution through culturally relevant programs for vulnerable children and to share their stories to empower creative, compassionate people to act. OUR WORK/ We offer educational scholarships, tutoring, and resources to at- risk children in rural Thailand to keep them off the path to prostitution and give them hope for a better future. PROJECT OVERVIEW/ Title: The FREEDOM Resource Center Computer Lab Estimated Budget: $5,200 Objectives/ Provide computer access and training to FREEDOM Scholarship Students Provide Internet access for homework research Teach students proficiency in Microsoft Word Teach students how to conduct Internet research Teach students responsible Internet browsing Teach students typing techniques Provide educational games to students, including Math, ESL, Art, etc. TARGET GROUP/ This project will benefit all the students in SOLD s Scholarship Program, as well as the other local children and community members who frequent SOLD s Resource Center. As of January 28, 2011, there are 95 students enrolled in The FREEDOM Scholarship Program. However, the Resource Center is open to the general public and provides classes and after- school programs to many children not receiving a scholarship from SOLD. On average, there are students per day participating in our After School Programs, and students attending Saturday English classes.
3 COMPUTER LAB/ The SOLD Project will equip its new Resource Center with 5 computers, giving the at- risk children of this poor rural community access to the Internet and the opportunity to learn computer skills. Without access to computers or the Internet, both of which are non- existent in the villages, our students are at a serious disadvantage in school and the job market beyond. An Internet- connected computer lab enables our students to complete homework assignments that require Internet access, learn valuable software, research, and typing skills, as well as pursue niche interests in design, web development, and more. We also intend to install learning games, channeling our kids fascination with technology and natural desire to play into educational programs that teach math, ESL, strategic thinking, creativity, and other skills. By investing in the education and development of these at- risk children, we not only prevent them from becoming victims of exploitation, but we free them to succeed, rise from poverty, and change the future for their families, their children, and beyond. BUDGET BREAKDOWN/ The initial set- up costs of the Resource Center Computer Lab are one- time expenses. We anticipate that this equipment will meet SOLD's program needs for at least three years. Ideal Request Fulfillment Date: April 30, ITEM D ESCRIPTION/QUANTITY TOTAL COST Computers Dell PC Desktop / 5 $4, Printer with Scanner Canon / 1 $ Software Microsoft Office Suite/ 5 users $ Educational Software (Still researching options) / 5 users $ Misc. Equipment Mice, mouse pads, printer ink, etc. $ TOTAL $5,200.00
4 ABOUT THE RESOURCE CENTER/ The Resource Center, located in Northern Thailand, broke ground in early Our first building was completed later in the year. The objective of the Resource Center is to: 1) provide a safe place for children to study and play after school where they receive mentorship, tutoring, and the opportunity to practice their English; and 2) provide a space within the community for extra- curricular activities such as weekend English classes, bi- annual trafficking awareness programs, parent meetings, and more. The Resource Center also serves as housing for long- term volunteers, and provides office space for our local Thai staff. The Resource Center was created in response to the lack of quality educational resources we saw in the rural government schools. We were delighted that, through our Scholarship Program, many children were able to remain in school; however, we realized that the schools they were attending were not sufficiently preparing them for success in life beyond grade school, and that many of the children lacked basic resources and quality role models. The Resource Center offers a place for our students and others in the village to receive mentorship, homework help, career planning, English courses, and more. RESOURCE CENTER STAFF/ Tawee Donchai, Thailand Director Bplah Chermui, The Freedom Project Director Nim Yongsuntonrung, Scholarship Manager & After School Program Director Jade Keller, Education Manager CONTACT/ Rachel Goble Carey, Executive Director [email protected],
