2 The project "Zero Emission Universiade" aims to remodel the XXVI 2013 Winter Universiade Trentino into a sustainable event, limiting and offsetting its related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions Ambitious project, and it has never been applied to an edition of the Universiade before

3 minimize the event s environmental impact, promoting the reduction of energy consumption and waste, as well as the reuse of equipment and optimization of resources compensate for unavoidable emissions with a number of initiatives aimed towards energy consumption reduction, having as ultimate goal the organization, operation and decommissioning of the sport event without increasing the overall level of greenhouse gas emissions achieve a greater participation of the Community to the event improve education and awareness about the environmental impact of the event, promoting a greater understanding of environmental protection issues

4 The project is divided into two phases: Phase I accounting of CO 2 emissions event Phase II offsetting emissions Schematic mechanism of the event s CO 2 compensation

5 The counting of emissions has been done in accordance with the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach, considering: all the organization operation decommissioning stages of the event and in accordance with the following international standards: GHG Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard UNI EN ISO :2012 "Greenhouse gases - Part 1: specification and guidelines, at the organization level, for the quantification and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions and their removal The adoption of these tools has allowed us to monitor greenhouse gas emissions following a standardized and transparent approach, which has facilitated the provision of analyses and comparisons over time

6 The calculation of emissions has strictly followed the methodology most commonly used in literature, which is based on the following relation: CO 2 emissions = (Activity data) x (Emission factor) For the quantification of the emissions related to the event it was employed SimaPro 7.3 (of the most used commercial software) In the absence of primary data, the ECOINVENT v.2 Database was taken as reference For the calculation of CO 2 equivalent emissions (carbon footprint) the IPCC GWP100 method was employed

9 To achieve the "Zero Emissions" goal, the Universiade Organizing Committee has signed a Sustainability Manifesto, committing to implement a collection of best practices in order to minimize the overall environmental impact: "paper free" Universiade low impact public transportation use of existing facilities and logistics, adapted when necessary to the occasion, many of which are already made from PEFC certified wood, i.e. from local forests managed in a legal and sustainable way partial snowing of ski slopes with snow which has fallen last winter and has been accumulated under special protective tarpaulins to prevent summer melting

15 The environmental impact of the XXVI 2013 Winter Universiade Trentino can be quantified to a total of 17,300 tco 2eq A number of savings initiatives undertaken throughout the Province of Trento are offsetting these emissions with the aim of making possible a Zero Emission Universiade These saving initiatives, undertaken on a voluntary basis by individuals and public administrations, do not include investment costs, being mostly related to small changes in people s habits and behaviour Rather, they often result in reduced energy bills

16 The project demonstrates the importance and effectiveness of human factors in the proper management of energy resources To reduce polluting emissions, technical interventions and technological improvements need to be accompanied by a strong change of mentality and environmental education, as expressed also by A. Einstein: You can t solve a problem with the same mindset that created it Economic investments in modern technologies and high efficiency in energy production plants from renewable sources can do little, if they are not accompanied by a sensible shift of the behaviours and daily habits of all of us!
