1 Unit Information Form (UIF) UIF1112 The UIF provides essential information to students, staff teams and others on a particular unit. Please refer to the University s Guidance notes on Unit Information Forms before completing the details below SECTION 1 - Changes made to Section 1 of the UIF will require Faculty level approval. If substantial changes to Units/Courses are required, consult with Sub Dean (Quality Enhancement) for advice Unit Name Unit Code Foundations of Electronic Systems and Computer Networks CIS038-1 Level FHEQ 4 Credit Value 30 Location of Delivery Summary/Overview Park Square This unit introduces the basic concepts and applications of electronic systems and computer networks. These include an introduction to circuits, electronic components, signals, systems, data communications and computer networking. The part on data communications and computer networks is joined up with the other units on computer networks. To enable students to demonstrate a sound understanding of the principles of electronic and networked computer systems To introduce students to technologies which underpin the concepts of signal analysis and processing in electronic circuits Aims To identify analytical methods for the design of electronic and networked computer systems To develop an insight into electronic components and building systems using them To develop basic knowledge and skills enabling sound electronic measurements and laboratory practice Core Learning Outcomes Page 1 of 6
2 Learning Outcomes On completion of this unit you should be able to: Assessment Criteria To achieve the learning outcome you must demonstrate the ability to: Understand the fundamental principles of electronic systems and computer networks. Demonstrate a sound understanding of the basic principles of signal analysis and processing in electronic circuits. Understand the operation of basic electronic components. Understand the measurement techniques, appreciate the limitations of electronic circuits and develop a good laboratory practice. Understand the principles of data communications in modern computer and telecommunication networks. Clearly document activities in log book form and undertake practical experiments and tests. Clearly describe solutions to simple problems. Clearly describe the operation of basic electronic components and calculate the principal parameters. Undertake practical experiments and tests to obtain the correct measurements in a laboratory settings. Document activities and solutions, undertake practical experiments and tests. Page 2 of 6
3 SECTION 2 - Any changes made to Section 2 of the UIF will normally require Faculty level approval Period of Delivery Pre-requisites/Restrictions Student Activity (10 notional learning hours = 1 credit) Year long Activity Notional Learning Hours Lectures 50 Seminars/tutorials Lab/Field work 50 Workshops Rehearsals Assessment 20 e-learning Self-directed study 150 Group work 30 Other (specify) Total 300 Approach to Learning Communication To help with the development of this you will: Work collaboratively in a student group using VLE Present group contributions in a professional format Effectively communicate with the demonstrator during the lab session Skills Development Information Literacy To help with the development of this you will: Work through background reading materials Work on a suitable assessment/exam Creativity and Critical Thinking To help with the development of this you will: Learn the latest development in the subject area in the lecture Exercise challenging practical in a laboratory environment There will be practical test designed to assess students handson skills; written report to test students design and analytical skills; and an exam to test students overall understanding of the subject. There will be formative feedback in week 12. Assessment Strategy Assessment 1 Electronics, Signals and Systems 30% A combination of discrete tasks involving the analysis and design of analogue electronic circuits and processing of signals using these components. Assessment 2 Computer Networking 30% A documented report of the development and implementation of a computer network. Page 3 of 6
4 Assessment 3 Electronic & Computer Systems 40% This is a combined assessment point with an examination at the end of the unit covering all the theoretical topics of this unit. The examination will be 2 hours and cover both Electronic and Networked Computer Systems; this whole assessment is weighted as 40% of the unit No Learning Outcomes Submission week Assessment Description of Weight Assessed (assignments) or Method* Assessment Method % length (exam) 1 PC/RE Practical/report 30% Y Y Y Y Week 12 2 PC Practical 30% Y Y Week 24 3 EX Exam 40% Y Y Y Y Y 2 hours *The following codes for assessment methods apply:- AR Artefact PC Practical CB Computer-based PF Performance CS Case Study PL Placement DI Dissertation or Project PO Portfolio EX Exam PR Presentation GR Group Report RE Individual Report IT In-unit Test OR Oral LR Literature Review OT Other SECTION 3 - Once initial approval of the unit has been given, the Unit Co-ordinator may make changes to this section, following appropriate consultation Outline Teaching Schedule The unit includes two parts, 1) Electronics and Systems and 2) Computer Networks.
